Dane Cook for Captain America?

After more than a week since the self imposed Captain America casting deadline has passed, you would think I would be upset that they haven’t announced their star yet. But considering the shortlist offered, I just wasn’t comfortable with any one of them leading The Avengers.
Well the rumour mill is churning again and it appears that Dane Cook actually had an audition for the role, and he hasn’t been told no yet.
He just updated his Twitter account with the following message: “I’m minus 7% body fat now, bones replaced w/lightweight scandium alloy! Had to get shredded (pictured) for Captain America audition and standup tour.”And it doesn’t sound like he’s joking, because when a fan asked if he is really going to audition, Cook replied: “I did already. They might be going young. I say go RDJr route – give me the part!”
Twitter is so educational.
I am not at all comfortable with Dane Cook in the role, however he is physically in shape, and if for some reason they DO go with this guy I will have to trust that they see something I don’t.
But just as he says, it might have more to do with them wanting a younger actor in the role (The original comic Steve Rogers storyline had him at enlistment age before being rejected) which would rule him out no matter how good they think he is.
But imagine if he got the role and was good at it? That sure would be a surprise for me!

I’m with you. The thought terrifies me.
Yea, I wouldn’t be happy about this at all. He has only ever been in one movie I actually liked and that was pushing it.
He is not a bankable actor, just don’t feel good about it at all.
No Way! Not Cap at all.
he’s cool, but not for this.
Good Luck Chuck.
“Dane Cook actually had an audition for the role, and he hasn’t been told no yet.”
I hope, that he hasn’t been told no yet, because they don’t even remember he auditioned…
Hmm….To be honest…I think this could work if done correctly. Now, now, before you all howl for my head on a plate, I just want you to think about something for a minute: Micheal Keaton as Batman. I wasn’t around whenever Batman came out in theaters, but from what I could gather, everyone and their dog wanted to crucify Tim Burton for giving Keaton the role. Back then, Micheal Keaton had established himself as a comedy guy (if I’m correct), and because of it no one thought that a “funny-guy” could successfully pull off a dark, brooding, miserable character like Batman. Then, Batman came out…..And most (if not all) the doubters were proven wrong. And, if anyone was still unsure of him afterward, then he proved them wrong with Batman Returns.
Or what about Heath Ledger when he was cast as The Joker in The Dark Knight? I believe many people were dumbstruck, if not angry, over that. I know I was. Because let’s face it: Heath Ledger did NOT have an ideal track record when it came to acting. His career was a mixed bag before TDK. And…Well….We all know how Ledger knocked that role out of the park and ran homeruns around the movie.
In short, although there’s a chance everyone’s fear will be realized when CA comes out, there’s also a vague chance that Dane could surprise us. So, IF (not when, IF) Dane Cook gets the role, instead of automatically assuming he’s going to blow it, just give him the benefit of a doubt and wait until you see him as Captain America to pass judgment.
The only flaw in your theory is that Keaton and Ledger are/were actors who can/could act where as Dane Cook is not an actor and when he tried was terrible. I don’t even think he’s remotely funny, but that is debatable depending on taste. So, I’m going to have to completely disagree with your graciousness to even consider giving him the benefit of a doubt. :)
Fair enough. I think he’s funny, but fair enough lol.
It seems to me that they’re simply looking at everyone and anyone for this role…lol.
RIGHT!? WTH!
Among the contenders were:
1) Dane Cook
2) A bunch of guys from One Tree Hill
3) Two of the Jonas Brothers
4) John Krasinski from the Ofice?
5) Paul Stanley from KISS
Disappointingly, only one of the above was a joke.
I’m glad they are really weighing their options and not just going for the most expensive man they can find in hopes he will draw in a big turnout. But damn Dane Cook? The casting people need to get their hands on Channing Tatum before he decides such a role is beneath him.
such a role isn’t beneath Channing Tatum. It’s so far above him he can’t see it. The only reason I would watch him in a movie is to watch him die. Kind of like Paris Hilton in House of Wax.
This rumour just isn’t funny…..
….a bit like the rest of Cook’s work
lol…totally agree
I don’t mind cook for say a supporting role, Dane has done some ok supporting role material but he isn’t Leading man material especially for a comic book adaptation where the leading man isn’t a huge smart ass. I also don’t like the general Buzz that they are going young captain america. I’d put him more in the age range of say superman or batman, say someone more christian bale age range, although it would be interesting to see someone like Chris Pine tackle the role even though he is in that young pretty boy look I think he may just have the young the studio is looking for and the chiseled enough look but all of the pics I’ve seen look too teeny, pretty boy ish looks. Just my 2 cents.
Please for the love of god, do not cast Dane Cook….I hate that mofo. He is like the male version of Jessica Alba. They both cannot act if their lives depended on it. There HAS to be another pretty boy with good acting skills…..
Ugh…they need a guy who is at least in his mid-thirties, square jawed and stoic looking. Like Kevin McKidd…but not…McKidd should have been Thor.
They need to hire me to cast these movies, I’d make you all happy.
I disagree. Considering Rogers was at enlistment age when he was rejected and subsequently sought out the Super Soldier experiment as an alternative, I would be opposed to a 30 something. I would actually prefer younger.
This is a big part of his character is that he is put in a position of leadership and he is far younger and inexperienced than most of the soldiers he is leading – a theme that carries over when he is called upon to lead the Avengers.
Fair enough…but the right actor here is paramount.
I actually liked the Leo idea.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! cook ruins everything. i hated it when he ruined the ending of “you scuk at photoshop” series, don’t let him ruin captain america too!
The problem with the role is that it’s a headlining role, with a B movie paycheck. That leaves a lot of potential actors out including my personal favorite Michael C Hall.
However, I think that Matt Bomer would be perfect for the role.
If they are going to pick anyone who was on Chuck, it should be Captain Awesome.
Rodney
I dont know if you said that as a joke, and what im about to say i say without my usual heavy sarcasm
The guy who plays Captain Awesome would REALLY be a great Captain America, like, in all seriousness.
I was absolutely serious when I said that. McPartlin would rock as Cap and he fills all the requirements.
Please no say it isn’t so!!!
I’m really wondering about how the production are thinking. Isn’t it better to cast a talented unknown than a untalented semi known?
Seems as though no one wants Dane Cook as Captain America. Which is good, because he sucks.
Just let another 15 min go by and this clown will be a fart in the wind.
What I’m trying to say is that I hate dane cook and hope he drops off the face of the earth. More or less. :)
Worst. Casting. Ever.
