Casting Rumours for Men in Black 3

Posted by on 09. 03. 2010in News Chat

Men in Black is a fun set of films that had a huge franchise potential which raked in massive cash for the studio. But after its 2002 sequel, they just didn’t bother to make another.

Well 8 years later we catch wind that there WILL be another Men in Black but it wont star Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. So casting is opening up and the rumour wheel is already turning with names like Josh Brolin and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Bloody Disgusting shares:

Columbia Pictures is officially having conversations regarding their third entry in the Men in Black franchise as we’re being told by industry insiders that in addition to Jonah Hex cowboy Josh Brolin likely (still unconfirmed) to star, they’ve shown strong interest in both Sacha Baron Cohen (Sweeney Todd, Bruno) and Jemaine Clement (“The Flight of the Conchords”) for a character named “Yaz” (a new agent?). Neither are locked, this should be taken strictly as rumor for now

Now before I get a pile of emails and comments from wannabe actors without agents or ambitious nobodies… we are NOT the casting agency associated with this film. (Seriously, we get emails all the time from people who obviously didn’t read the article saying “Put me in UR Movie! I am perfect for the role” like I can do anything about it …)

Now that the public service announcement is out of the way, I really like the Men in Black series, and I think it would be great to focus on some of the other agents. I mean, there are 24 other letters in the alphabet, so why should agent M and J get all the attention?

Keep the charm and move forward. No need for Smith and Jones. I am not sure about Cohen as an agent, but he does odd well enough that he would make a great alien of some sort.

The first film grossed nearly $600m with an impressive $440m from the sequel. According to “the rules” there NEEDS to be another, but they didn’t. Probably because Will Smith costs too much. They can do this without him and its been a while.

Lets get some new Men in Black.

  1. Mykrantz says:

If Tommy Lee Jones has been promoted to the head of the MIB and Jay died, a sequel like this MIGHT make sense, but any MIB movie that doesn’t address why the switch of focus from K and J will likely have a lot of trouble making money. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones were a LARGE part of the reason the first 2 movies did so well, if the movie is being made without them, why doesn’t the studio just invent a new sci-fi buddy cop franchise rather than trying to shoe-horn new agents into Smith and Jones’ shoes?

    • Rodney says:

Its always been clear that there are other agents in the field. Why not have a story about some of those agents too?

Why does someone have to die to allow room for more adventures?

      • thematticus says:

Because that seems like a straight-to-dvd approach for a film. I agree that they have to explain why the focus shifts.

  2. Mykrantz says:

Smith dying was just an example of how they could continue with the story, there is really no reason he needs to die.

What I was trying to get across was the creators would need to address the whereabouts of J and K if they are doing another MiB without Smith and Jones, and wouldmn’t it be easier to make a new Sci-fi buddy cop movie, rather than dragging along all the MiB baggage if you aren’t using J and K?

    • Pedro says:

Actually they don’t have to address anything really, they can just have two look alike J and K passing through the command centre.

That’s all you need really, audience can just assume they’re off on another mission, end of story.

The movie can then continue with the new agents.

Rip Torn might be a problem after his little stunt of being drunk, carrying a gun inside a bank.

  3. Patrick says:

I’m pretty sure Tommy Lee Jones was Agent K. Could be wrong though. Either way I look forward to a new MIB movie.

  4. 420BAND says:

2nd was a little weak in comparison to the 1st. Frank the Pug was cool but the villaness wasn’t all that engaging, How bout getting Rosario Dawson back in some form (I think they left that open, no?).
FOTC guy is a odd choice, but I like the idea, Sasha is awesome but I dont see the fit either, (after Bruno he’s probally looking for work)

Not super excited but will follow.

    Johnah Hill?
he seems to be getting everything anyways. I’d rather see him in this than F’n up Ghostbusters.

  5. Matty says:

Who is playing Frank the pug?

  6. Erick says:

Rodney… Do people really email you asking to be put in the movie? lol

    • Rodney says:

      Yeah, they do. Lots.

To this day I still get emails asking me how people can be in Breaking Dawn since I wrote an article saying the studio was casting it already. They don’t read the article, they just email me their resumes or poorly worded emails begging me to give them a shot.

When I tell them they need to ask their agent how to get into the movie they start cussing at me and insulting because “I wont help them”

      lol

  7. ramesh says:

yes you are i have seen that movie its as usual as u describe.

  8. thematticus says:

    Ryan Reynolds.
