James Bobin to Direct The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made?

There is still rumblings that the ball is slowly moving forward on a new Muppet Movie. Last heard it was going to be Jason Segel writing The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made! with his Sarah Marshal co-director Nick Stoller to direct, but now it seems that James Bobin has been offered the keys.

First Showing says:

James Bobin, co-creator of the cult HBO show Flight of the Conchords (with Jemaine Clement & Bret McKenzie), is being offered the directing job on the new Muppets movie in development at Disney. Vulture says that no deals have been made, but “the movie is James’ to direct — if he wants it.”

I haven’t seen Flight of the Conchords, so I don’t know if this guy is a good fit for The Muppets or Not, but as long as Jason Segel is still writing The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made, then I am cool with it.

Its been far too long since we have seen a Muppet Movie and longer still since its been a pure Muppet Movie and not a literary classic re-imagined with Muppet characters. Don’t get me wrong, I love The Mupets Christmas Carol, Treasure Island etc… but I want to see the gang of fledgling performers trying to hit it big with their variety of stage acts, and I would love to see how they fit those things into a modern entertainment world.

In the past Muppet films and the show, they had a very dated maudlin variety show, and the updated comeback show wasn’t that popular and was eventually canceled.

  1. This may seem like a silly thing to say, but I hope they have adults in mind more than they usually do, like back in the Jim Henson days. After Disney took over the humour and tone just got *too* kiddy-friendly. Aim to get the adults watching again, the kids that love funny animals will no doubt watch anyway!

  2. I stopped reading after “I haven’t seen Flight of the Conchords” because DAMN!

After you watch FOTC, you will think of life in terms of “Before FOTC” and “After FOTC”, and everything “After FOTC” will be that much sweeter, my friend.

  3. Conchords is a rare gem and I am a fan.(who dosent think Arj Barker isn’t funny) Also kinda glad that Jason isn’t helming the Muppets cause I didn’t see that at all. I like the dude and think he pretty talented but wasn’t the appropiate fit in my head.

he had his chance w/ Sarah Marshall with the Count Muppet. enough’s enough.

  4. I haven’t seen much of Flight of the Conchords, but what I have I loved. It is sort of similar to the Muppets in the 80’s, so I see this a very good decision.
