Del Toro says Maguire is NOT Bilbo Baggins

With Tobey Maguire suddenly unemployed, his dance card has opened up significantly so speculation fueled by some unfounded rumours all pointed to the former webslinger to be taking on the role of the modest hobbit hero Bilbo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit.

Well it didn’t take long to swat down that fly. Del Toro says nope.

Worst Previews offers:

While that wouldn’t be a terrible casting choice, director Guillermo Del Toro has just posted a message on The One Ring forum, simply stating: “Two words. Not true.”

So all that speculation puts us back to square one.

They are not telling us who they are considering, and we are months away from principal photography, so its got to be announced soon.

Personally I thought Tobey would have been a great young Bilbo. I hope they pick someone “better” that just works more so this just turns into another one of those “Hey, remember when we thought Maguire was going to play him? This guy is such a better choice” moments.

    Thank god. That is all.

    Blast! sad news.

GOOD. He is not a box office draw, he’s not that impressive of an actor, and he’s so humorless and devoid of any personality and charm that I think he’d be miserable on that set with all of those happy people.

Anyone get the feeling that were gonna see “Pans Labrinth” and “Hellboy 2″ design crews doin’ more of the same..HOPE NOT.

but Del Toro’s a rare breed of imagination and talent and I would hate him to turn into the spanish Tim Burton (if he’s not already) in terms of simular ambiance…

    any thoughts?

I had the same fear when I heard about the director choice. I really don’t want to see Bilbo’s Labrynth here. The kicker is that the Hobbit is supposed to be even lighter in tone than the Lord of the Rings.

Personally they should pick an older actor to play Bilbo. Bilbo wasn’t “young” in the Hobbit. I think he was around 50 hobbit years? Frodo in the LOTR was 40 h.y.? Bilbo should be played by a somewhat middle aged british actor.

Hi, since the news about tobey being unemployed, i was wondering…
What happens with the contract he made for the 2 spiderman movies?
I mean, he goes empty handed or gets a share?

Tobey….Bilbo? We have an entire porn industry of actors that would have situated better. I don’t mean that seriously but as a spectrum that is where I feel Tobey stands as to be the one to act as Bilbo.

I hope they use casting calls to find someone to fit and we can end up saying “who is he? What a great idea!”
