Could Iron Man 3 have Demon in a Bottle?

MTV was chatting with War Machine co-creator Bob Layton and it seems that there are hints in Iron Man 2 that might lead up to a Demon in a Bottle storyline in Iron Man 3.

Now I didn’t realize they were already writing 3 (since I assume Avengers will fit in between) but Layton seems convinced it could happen.

Worst Previews quotes Layton

“I think they’ve come up with a terrific segue to the third film, which I think is going to be fairly powerful,” he said. “My understanding is that the third film could very well be the ‘Demon in a Bottle’ story mixed in there with everything and I’m kind of looking forward to that, if that’s where they wind up going.”

I hope they build up into a solid Demon storyline. Its what Iron Man was made for. Its the most meaningful and notable storyline in all of the Iron Man books.

It was the thing that even made me pay attention to the character to begin with.

And they are planting the seeds effectively with Tony already having a penchant for the wobbly drinks. Its an easy fallback when the stress lays on thick.

It defines Stark and gives heart to the character instead of just a careless millionaire in a suit made of kickass.

I really hope they pull this storyline out when it will matter. Don’t rush it, make it right.

  1. The tone of that storyline seems to clash with the tone of the films. If they did Demon in a Bottle with the tone of the first film, it would come off as more comedic than powerful and meaningful. It would be impossible to take it seriously.

  2. I’m a huge fan of the Iron Man genre and I think it’d be great to have that as a central element in the third movie. Fanboys whine all the time when a movie franchise gets too far away from the heart of a character and like it or not alcohol is a big part of the I.M. saga, I think Fav and Downey could make a great film out of it.

  3. They may have hints in the 2nd one. Everyone knows he’s Iron Man now and he can be a bit cocky, like we see when he jumps out of the plane and lands in the Expo and everyone’s cheering for him. We do also see a bit of his drinking in the first film, maybe they’ll more shots of him taking more shots.

  4. @Soggie G’s last reply…

For starters I think its a little early to bring out the whole “milking the success” argument (let’s wait to see how good iron man 2 is), not to mention that I feel its really unfair to bring up the “spiderman 3 curse”. Raimi’s hands we’re forced in that situation and, HOPEFULLY, all the studios out there took notice and learned from that…

As for the Demon in a bottle storyline being used in the Avengers…Don’t you feel that would steal TOO much thunder from all of the other characters in the Avengers?! (this is a pretty heavy storyline we’re talking about here!)

  5. Like a lot of people who’ve replied, I’m a bit skeptical about them making an Iron Man with Stark’s boozing being one of the carrier themes. I don’t think so, because it would feel too good (deep?) to be true for Hollywood. I think that they might tone it down very much if they pursue this storyline.

However, I think Downey Jr. would really have a lot to give towards that kind of performance, due to his personal experiences. Nothing against the man, I just now that he’s really “been there” and so I think he could really pull it off.

  6. I think I’m the only one suggesting that they don’t do the Demon story until Avengers. Think about it…

Something HUGE happens and makes them all come together to fight this Rising Evil. and Tony’s drinking gets in the way of them fighting said evil, and almost causes the death of some of the Avengers. That could be a great segue to Avengers 2.

But than again I like to spat my opinion lol

    1. I have to say, that sounds like a TERRIBLE idea.

My fanboyness of comics is only to the depth of the movies. I have never read, nor plan to ever read, any comic books. I have nothing against, it just isn’t my thing. However, based on what people have said about Demon in a Bottle and the anticipation of Avengers I do not believe that they could pull it off. Either it will be to central of a theme and take away from the rest of the movie making more of an Ironman 4, or it would be a side story witch would spidy3oniz the movie or leave the great Demon story lacking.

If they want Demon in Avengers (which is not a bad idea just a bad starting point) it would be better to hit Demon up is Ironman 3 and continue to run with it through the Avengers movie(s).

      1. First off I’m just saying that it seems like they are just trying to milk the success out of the Iron Man movies. Is three Iron Man movies to much or not enough, I don’t know. It just gives them more room to fail (like you said the Curse of Spidey 3) I do give Favreau kudos

Look all I’m saying is that if they want to convey the impact of Tony’s alcohol abuse than I think they should have it in the Avengers movie.

What better way to show Tony Stark his wrongdoings by nearly killing Spidey, or Thor, any will do.

That or he almost kills Pepper (but that goes against the point I’m trying to argue… damn!

  7. I don’t think they’re gonna touch demon in a bottle, to be honest (they may hint, but not use it a they should). It’d be stupid not to, in my opinion, but I just don’t see it happening. That is, unless the second film can help the series segue into darker waters tonally. Not horrendously dark, but I just don’t see them dealing with a subject like alcoholism if the sequels are the exact same tone as the first film (and if they did, it wouldn’t feel nearly as meaningful as it should… in my opinion)
