Weak Link From Batman Begins Joins New Del Toro Film

There are some that disagree… but it’s pretty much universally accepted that Katie Holmes was by far the weak link in the mighty chain known as Batman Begins, and aside from brining Heath Ledger on as the Joker, replacing her with Maggie Gyllenhaal was the best decision the producers could have made (unless you’re naive enough to believe Holmes “decided” not to be in the sequel).

Anyway, Holmes has just signed on for a new film that Hobbit director Guillermo del Toro has co-written and will produce called “Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark”. I’m not very pumped about it because the synopsis sounds like 5 million other low budget horror movies we’ve all seen:

Based on a 1973 made-for-TV movie, follows a young girl who moves in with her father and his girlfriend (presumably the role Holmes would play) and their discovery that there are demon-like creatures inhabiting the house.

Yaaawwwnnnnn. Seriously, a family moves into a house and discovers there are ghosts/monsters/demons/republicans in it? Come on, can’t they come up with something even SLIGHTLY more original? (source: JoBlo)

    1. Yes. Gyllenhaal is so disturbingly ugly that she almost ruined TDK for me. So Bats is 2 for 2 with the females ruining the flick to me.

  1. John you forgot Del Toro will be co-writing and producing this. Your going to have to give him much more credit then that. It may seem very simple but im sure when we get more details it will be much deeper then that and have that del toro feel to it.

  2. No offense, but that sentence is only a small description of the plot. What matters is whats in the story and how it’s delivered.

The problem with similar films is not the plot synopsis, it’s the fact that the story doesn’t deliver anything but a bunch of easily explainable situations.

I know he’s not announced as directing, but DelTorro has a wild imagination and if he even put half of that imagination into the screenplay he co-wrote, then it will likely be the most interesting haunted house movie since Poltergeist.

I like to be optimistic. If it ends up sucking, it ends up sucking.

  3. Alot of plot synopsis read like they are rehashes of already played out themes; however, in the right hands it can still be a masterpiece. Hellboy 2 really won me over with what del Toro can do visually. Him having his hand in writing and producing this flick gives me some hope that it will be good. Just hope that Holmes does not detract from the experience.
