Alyson Hannigan Shuns the Buffy Remake

Back when talk of the Kuzui’s remaking Buffy the Vampire Slayer without Joss Whedon hit the net there was an outcry and reaction. Then silence. To the point where I wonder if they are even still considering it.

But in a recent interview with Alyson Hannigan (who has outgrown the Buffy stigma) who rounds out the entire cast voicing their concerns about a remake. The consensus is “No Joss, no way”

Cinema Blend shares:

We asked her about those Buffy remake plans and she seems as perturbed by the whole thing as the show’s fans. When we asked her what she thought of Buffy without Joss she said, “Yeah, and that’s a very big mistake in my opinion.” Whedon wrote both the 90s movie and ran the subsequent spin-off television show she was a part of. So it makes sense that Hannigan says, “I mean if Joss isn’t involved, it’s only the title.”

And without Joss, there’s no way they’ll get her involved in it. Not even for a cameo. She says, “Not without Joss. Joss is the only reason that we would go back. I mean, it’s just ridiculous to think of that TV show without Joss. That’s just silly to me… And all the fans know that, too, so I don’t know what they’re thinking.”

With Vampires all the rage, it makes sense the Kuzui’s would want to jump on that bandwagon, and when Joss said no they wanted to move on without him. But the fans don’t want to.

It could have potential. I don’t think they need the cast to return, and I don’t know that a remake could work. I would love to see more but I am fine leaving it fade. I would LOVE to see more, but only if done right so its one of those frustrating things were you want it made, but you don’t want it to suck.

So after hearing it was on, and hearing the fan reaction and cast rebelling the notion, no more news from the Kuzuis has surfaced. So with this quote from Hannigan this much later seems out of place, but it just adds a level of finality to the Kuzui’s proposal.

  1. What was he thinking? They are one of the tightest knit groups to ever exist on modern day television, does he really think he can get away with TV extorting money from hapless cast members? I’d actually rather not see a remake of Buffy in any way because it was an amazing show (best I’ve ever seen) and we owe it to that to move on.

  2. Stating that she “shuns” a remake is another dumb headline.

Of course she and the others would not go ahead without Joss – without him or his writing team onboard it would be stupid.

Make a new film version and star the cast carry on where Buffy and Angel left off and see how it goes.

To be honest it should wipe the floor with Twilights lame efforts.

Again Joss should write and direct – give the guy a break and some credit for gods sake.

    Advertise HIS creations properly.

But to reboot a new tv series has to be one of the dumbest ideas Ive ever heard.

    Make an animated version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnUvZP7-5LM
and keep most of the cast setting in high school.

I know years ago we all were shocked to hear they would recast the original Trek series cast and set at academy –

But to try this with Buffy and NOT involve Joss Wedon is like making a Terminator film without James Cameron.

If in any doubts as to a Buffy / Angel series – call it SLAYERS and feature a different character from the Buffyverse each week killing vamp and meeting up with old cast along the way.

So please its not a case of shunning its a case of “dont be so stupid”

    1. The only way you could do another slayer in the buffyverse is either by having it a prequel, or sometime after they did the big ceremony to make all of the potential slayers actual slayers.

Also, it would be hard to make a sequel, since the season 8 and 5 comics of buffy and angel (respectively) are canon and kind of mess up the two stories ever really coming together again. Also, if the comics were to be made into a movie, would be really hard for anyone but die hard fans to absorb, therefore it wouldn’t sell.

  3. The reboot just won’t work. How do you reboot a franchise where all of the original actors are young enough to still pull off the characters, and the creator is still alive and holds the loyalty to the original fan community??

What, would there be a doppleganger cast? Lindsay Lohan as Buffy and Zack Efron as Xander Harris? I’m sorry but no matter who you have running around playing slayer it will just feel fake and corny.

It’s not that I wouldn’t love to breathe new life into the Buffyverse, but without the right people involved it will turn into a catastrophe- especially with all of the twilight tweens running around thinking vampires are abstinent and sparkle, the marketing alone will probably be a train wreck.

  4. Buffy didn’t have enough action? I have to disagree there; almost every episode Buffy had to literally slay something. Not to mention they brought there A game for the season finales.

    1. I said “for my tastes” so I guess it was lost in translation? Hey if you liked Buffy more power to you, was just to much drama for me. I just preferred Angel to it, I cannot change the way I feel to suit your love of Buffy.

  5. I wasnt a fan of Buffy but even I can say it would be a tremendous flop without Whedon. I would be in favor of a new Slayer if they can create the right mix of Drama and action.

What turned me off to Buffy is… it was very heavy on drama and seemed to have very little action peppered in, there didnt seem to be a conscious effort to create enough action to suit my tastes. I was a much bigger fan of the Angel series, just felt like Whedon got it right.

  6. I can’t see them making another Buffy without Joss. Why not create a new slayer? It’s not like Buffy was the only slayer. I think it’s a bad idea period, but if they feel the need to do it. Create a new slayer and leave Buffy alone.
