Smith takes on Flowers for Algernon

Flowers for Algernon is a great story where the science fiction is very secondary to the heart of the characters involved.

Will Smith is attached to star in the adpatation as Charlie, a mentally handicapped man who volunteers for an experiment that would make him smart. The experiment was a success, but he becomes super smart but that it came at a price.

Get the Big Picture says:

Smiths’s Overbrook Entertainment will partner up with Polsky Films and Tracy Nyberg, an associate producer on Hancock and Smith’s assistant during the production of I Am Legend to steer this update of the 1959 novel, which won Cliff Robertson the Best Actor trophy in 1969 (that version was called Charly).

I really do enjoy Will Smith in some good old ass whoopin action or comedies, but he has proven he can nail down a dramatic role when he wants to as well.

Will Smith can put aside the Big Willie style when the role calls for it and I think he would be perfect for this.

  1. The reason “Seven Pounds” didn’t work was because the premise wasn’t executed properly. It was done in a way that insulted your intelligence and asked you to take too many things for granted.

  2. Will be good if they can actually do credit to and stay true to the spirit of the source material…….unlike I am Legend and I, Robot.

You can bet that somewhere, a hollywood exec is thinking of a way to turn this into another dumbass action movie.

    1. Because they obviously did that with Pursuit of Happyness, The Legend of Bagger Vance, and Ali.

Just coudldn’t leave those as dramas with Will Smith in it. All littered with senseless action.

    1. He’s will smith. I don’t think he’s capable of going full retard. Like there is bound to be something charming about his character.

Besides the retard aspect would be negated if he later becomes a genius.

  3. Hmmmmn, I’m actually really intrigued by this news, I’d heard of this novel before, just never knew what it was about. It sounds like this is a very clever take on both the Sci-Fi genre and the genre that deals with mentally disabled adults (both genres that I grow easily tired of sometimes), and it sounds like there’s a likelyhood that it can sidestep most of the cliches associated with those genres.

Very cool, I might just finagle myself a copy of “Flowers For Algernon”, might check out “Charly” as well.

I just hope Will Smith isn’t crying the entire film, or walking, soaked, through a rainstorm with a suit on.

  4. There are only 3 actors that I respect most and watch every movie they are in:
    1)Brad Pitt
    2)Will Smith
    3)Ryan Reynolds

Now this guy nails every role he’s in. I can’t pick any movie in which I didn’t like him. His last movie ‘Seven Pound'[also starring Rosario Dawson] was awesome.

    1. Totally agree with you, save for the Ryan Reynolds part–not yet, anyway, I wanna see more of him :-)

Dude, Seven Pounds was AWEFUCKINGSOME!!!!! I don’t know why it wasn’t a hit and why critics didn’t like it that much :-( It was way up there with The Pursuit of Happyness for me…..

      1. I don’t think it was a bad movie but I didn’t think it was that great. I tell you what I didn’t like about it. To me the movie played out like it was suppose to be some kind of mystery what his character was up to. I thought it was obvious from the trailer. I think it would have been better if they let you know from the beginning instead of trying to reveal everything at the end. Maybe I missed the point.
