Stallone wants to do Edgar Alan Poe

I didn’t know this about Sylvester Stallone, but he has quietly been working on a script for a film revolving around the life of poet Edgar Alan Poe.

Shock Till You Drop says:

The article centers primarily on his proposed Death Wish remake, the subject of his long in development bio pic on Edgar Allan Poe (simply titled Poe) did come up.

“I keep telling my producer Avi Lerner, ‘Make Edgar Allan Poe!’ He says, ‘Does he have a gun?’ ‘No, he doesn’t have a gun’, ‘Can he throw a knife?’ I say, ‘No, he writes poetry!’”

Poe has been a long time passion project for Stallone who penned the script and would like to direct the project.

I think a lot of movie fans likely had the same knee jerk reaction to Stallone’s passion for Poe.

Stallone’s comedic chops and dramatic potential were both a surprise to me, but something as serious as an Edgar Alan Poe film just doesn’t bring the image of Sly Stallone to mind.

Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore.”

Well, if you take a look at Stallone’s films after Rocky he didn’t exactly go the action star route. Unfortunately most of the movies that he came out in simply weren’t that successful, and then came Rambo, which did reignite his career somewhat since his success at that time came mostly from Rocky.

Stallone slowly made his way into the action genre, but most of his movies early on were more set on drama than explosions.

I’m surprised you just found out about this. This has been pretty common knowledge for a while now. I think it’s a good idea, as long as they keep it low budget and independent. He needs to produce it himself. If you actually go back and watch Rocky, which is the last time I think he really did something with the passion he has for this, he did a masterful job. Stallone is a lot more than a meathead, and the Rocky sequels overshadow the brilliant, almost artsy feel to the first film. If that would have been the only Rocky, I think the world would look at Sly a whole different way.

    Awesome. Poe = GOD

They should go on and make the movie cuz Poe is a genius. They should also make more movies from his stories: Murders in the Rue Morge, The Black Cat, etc… Huge production remakes, not like the recent “House of Usher” and put Edward Norton as Poe.

Should they make a Poe film? Hell yes. Great biography–it would win a damn Oscar.

Should Stallone be invovled? Hell no.

I remember there being rumors of Michael Jackson wanting to do a Poe bio-pic. Does anyone else recall that?

This is actually the first I have heard of it.
Honestly, I would love to see a Poe movie. He has an absolutely fascinating life story, genius child, dead parents, falls madly in love with his young first cousin.
I’m also really curious what Stallone wants to do with it. I’d pay to see it.
