Ian Mckellan talks The Hobbit and Magneto

At the San Sebastian Film Festival Sir Ian Mckellan reminded us that Guillermo Del Toro is efficiently scheduling the 383 days of filming The Hobbit to begin in March or April.

He also gives a little insight into the Middle Earth reunion that will have his Gandolf character once again on screen alongside.. Middle Earth.

ScreenCrave quotes McKellen:

“Unfortunately, there won’t be many of the actors going back,” he said, “unless they’re going to put masks on and be disguised as dwarves! Andy Serkis is, at the moment, I think, the only other actor who’s doing this film.”

Hmm, so the pending scripts are on their way. They better be, we’ve been hearing about them being written for what seems like an eternity. Next up, what does McKellen have to say about the Magneto film?

“There’s meant to be a Magneto script floating around, but I’ve not read it, so I suspect it wouldn’t involve me,” he said. “I think it would be about the younger Magneto, and the most I could hope for would be to top and tail that. They can’t have someone whose face is as lined as mine any longer!”

I was often very curious about the assumption that McKellan would have anything at all to do with a Magneto film considering its supposed to be a prequel film. I know they youngified him for the flashback scene in X3, but are we really to think that McKellan would be in this?

I have been looking forward to a Magneto movie as well, but I didn’t think for a second that McKellan would be in it. Maybe Zack Efron.

  1. I have never read the LotR books or the Hobbit(which is weird cuz I always read the books before seeing any movie…yes, I know that is a big mistake!), but is Gandalf more kickass in those or not. I feel he was so hyped up in the movies but never fully unleashed the way he was portrayed. Isn’t he a bad ass wizard? I don’t play D&D enough anymore to know the exact class and abilities so someone break it down for me!!!

  2. When they youngified him for X-Men: The Last Stand, that might not have been too much of a stretch, but depending on how young they want to go, they would not be able to do it.

  3. I think that Joseph Fiennes from the abc show FlashForward would make a good young magneto.

Just don’t make it a repeat of the disaster that was Wolverine.
