Why Nic Cage left Green Hornet

Nic Cage has always been a bittersweet favourite of mine. When he is good he leaves my jaw in my lap, but when he cranks out a stinker you better run. Seems he does nothing half ass.

So when I heard that Green Hornet was losing another one of its stars, and that star was Cage I was conflicted about how his departure would affect the film. Cage haters will see this as a good thing, and fans lament, but I am on the fence with him, so I have no feelings on the topic.

But the real question was WHY he left. Speculation brews when we see how much trouble this film is facing with people coming and going like a penny arcade peep show.

Collider shares:

The sometimes great, but always fun, actor said that he “wasn’t interested in just being just a straight-up bad guy who was killing people willy-nilly.” He goes on to say that “‘The Green Hornet’ was something that I wanted to do, I think Michel Gondry is very talented and I had hoped it would work but I think Seth Rogen and Michel had a different take on the character.”

So it sounds like he is just laying down the “Creative Differences” card and leaving it at that.

We won’t really know what Rogen and Gondry had in mind for the character til we see their finished product. I have always enjoyed Cage’s badguy roles, so maybe there is something there.

  1. This Rogen attachment to the Hornet is just plain bad form. And one of the WORST actors of all time decides not to take the role because of creative differences might tell the general public that “Observe and Report 2: THe Green Hornet is a doomed project. The whole idea just makes me ill.

  2. I think we can all agree Nic Cage isn’t exactly the most versatile actor, and its true when his movies are bad, they BAD. But his good ones are awesome. To this day, I cannot forget him as Castor Troy/Sean Archer in “Face/Off”, one of the most badass films ever made. Him and Travolta were a deadly combination!

  3. Rodney, I’m with you on the Cage comment. When he’s on, he’s on! Lord of War, Leaving Las Vegas, Adaptation, Matchstick Men, Raising Arizona, and The Weather Man are movies he was so good in, that I’ll continue giving him chances. He’s clearly a paycheck actor and it shows in lots of the lousy films he’s done. Though, when he does something great…it’s really great.

  4. This is a case where I agree with Rodney 100 percent. When Nic’s on his game he’s great. When he’s not…..not good. I’m glad Waltz is in though. And sorta glad here that Cage isn’t.

  5. I don’t mind Nicolas Cage, but Christoph Waltz is by far the better actor and he knows it. That’s why he’s coming out with the ‘creative differences’ card, when it’s more likely the real reason is money.

    1. I disagree Andrew, on both counts. If it was about money issues, Cage would have said so.

After Cage walked, then the folks behind Green Hornet had to find an actor to fill the role. Hiring Waltz had nothing to do with Cage leaving. (“He knows it’)

  6. He’s seems to come out with more utter crap than good, I don’t see him adding anything to this type of film and glad he’s dropped it.

I’ve loved many a cage flick, but thought much less of even more, so no hard feelings here.

  7. I’m in the middle with Cage as well but I heard that Christoph Waltz is replacing him in this film.
Waltz was hands down the best thing in ‘Inglorious Basterds’ and can not wait to see him in more movies.

    1. Terrible actor. I curse the day they gave this guy an actor, all though on the other hand, it gives actors hope that ANYONE can win one. Rodney, I’m glad he leaves your jaw on the floor in a good way, because everytime I think about the money he makes and how awful he is, my jaw drops. That being said, weatherman and lord of war were excellent films. I think the one talent (despite the crappy films he makes for big money) he has is picking good scripts. Leaving Las Vegas, Weatherman, Lord of War, Raising Arizona, Adaptation, and Matchstick Men were all good movies DESPITE Nic Cage, not because of him. Replace him with another actor in any of those movies and they are instantly improved.
