Star Wars Live Action TV Series is Still Happening

The long awaited Live Action Star Wars TV Show has been inching forward, but not forgotten. At the recent DragonCon, Lucasfilm exec Steve Sansweet had a little to say on the topic.

AICN spills

“Writers” have been working on the project. (But which writers? Refugees from the “Theshold” or “Life On Mars” writers room? Anybody know anything?)

* Preproduction would begin in 2009.

* Production would begin in 2010.

* The series will likely begin airing in 2012. (Earlier estimates put it in 2011.)

We still know little about the series aside beyond the fact that it’s set between the death of Padme and Emperor Palpatine’s dissolution of the Imperial Senate.

Personally I hope that the TV Series takes a far different approach than the kid friendly Clone Wars animated series. While I don’t hate the series, I would prefer that a less kiddie version of Star Wars is offered up.

An adventure of a non-rebel, non-alliance, non-clone character would be a great starting point to bring about an unrelated story that isn’t so tied up in all the Galactic Struggles. Give us something that shows how the rest of the Star Wars Universe lives! Not every story has to be on a galactic scale.

I have high hopes (as I do with every Star Wars product) but I worry they will give us C3P-90210: Angsty Droids In Love.

  1. If Star Wars: The Clone Wars is terrible now, buy 2012 this show might fail as well. I’m still praying for Star Wars Episode VII,VIII,IX, Expanded Universe Trilogy or a Sequel Trilogy one day after Lucas is gone.

  2. I would be looking forward for this, if not for the fact that George Lucas is off his rockers. I loved the original movies, but they’ve all been ruined for me. I think this could be good… some young jedi apprentice survived the onslaught and wants to do something about all that’s wrong, but lacks the skills… some young member of the Aldaraan court starts to gather allies to form the alliance… the forces of Palpatine slowly take things over, make lives seem better at first in some places, but behind the shadows they’re stripping the rights of aliens, shutting down debate, etc. etc. etc.

There’s a lot of potential there and an entire universe with which to explore it, but there’s no way it ends up being anything edgy or good so long as George Lucas is involved in anyway whatsoever.

  3. I really hope that George Lucas has little if nothing to do with this. Seriously. Get with the guys from Bioware who made the short trailer for The Old Republic and take a cue that and the fan reaction. It was amazing. That 2-3 minute trailer for a game was EVERYTHING the majority of Star Wars fans have been dying for. We’re older, more mature and I think there is a consensus that we are due for a more mature, serious universe. That’s not to say you can’t have ALL the things that make Star Wars great, but why not take things in a new direction? I don’t understand why every thing that comes out has to have some over the top comedy relief, bad acting and shitty script writing?

I know it’s easier to make a 2-3 minute trailer than produce a 12-13 episode mini series but I really think the next big Star Wars project needs a new direction and attitude. If it’s even similar to a crappy Scifi Channel mini series with a similar production level it’s doomed!

Though I’m sure we’re gonna have some cutesy faced animated monkey/gopher bull-crap, horribly forced romance and the epic movie moment of Darth Vader crying “Nooooooooooooooooooooo” that makes my butt pucker quicker than a walk through the rainbow district.

  4. Smugglers’ Tales baby, featuring new people all over the place…be original GL…PLEASE!!!

Instead of the obvious a younger Han Solo, make it a young Lando who is trying to be “legitimate” businessman around Nar Shaddaa, the Smuggler’s Moon. Think Mos Eisley squared.

Action Action Action…Stay away from the new Battlestar Galactica stuff please.

Oh yeah and kill people off too…Redshirts baby, and they could be like guest stars, a la say James Woods who is integral to the story, but his death should show that there is a price to be paid in the war, NOT JUST CLONES, AND

    that way it’s not predictable…
