Rob Liefeld Spills on Deadpool Development Meeting

Posted by on 23. 09. 2009in News Chat

I like the Deadpool character a fair bit. The only thing I don’t like about him is that he was created by Rob Liefeld. The vast majority of Deadpool’s comic success came long after he left Marvel and was written and drawn by someone else. But in reality he is the creator of the character.

So Liefield was brought in as a consultant for a meeting with Fox’s Lauren Shuler Donner about the future of the character on screen. He twittered to both people following his feed about the results of the meeting, and I read about them at Filmonic

Walking into Deadpool movie meeting!!! Yowza!

Great Deadpool movie meeting! Lauren Schuler Donner and her team are headed in the right direction!

Deadpool movie checklist- DP in costume-check! Breaking 4th wall-check! Loads of killing-double check!

Deadpool movie- YES! Ryan Reynolds is on board!!!

Also excited to discuss possibilities of Cable in future X-films!!!

Clarification, Cable definitely NOT in Deadpool movie, but possible role in future X-films….not First Class.

Donner Company is on top of making the Deadpool movie that fans want. They get it. He’s funny, tortured, clever, a bastard and mucho action!

So it looks like many of the concerns fans had are clearly addressed to satisfaction here.

He will wear the costume, break the 4th wall (talk to the audience), be violent, and be Ryan Reynolds.

I don’t know how they are going to introduce Cable (the post apocalyptic chronologically misplaced future son of Scott and Jean) into the X-Films so I hope that part was just talk until they really flesh these films out more.

  1. Monty says:

It would mean more if Fox brought in Joe Kelly as a consultant.

  2. thematticus says:

Rob Leifeld is a huge douche-CHECK. Seriously, he did create awesome characters, and co founded Image, so not all bad.

    • Rodney says:

You do realize he was FIRED from Image, and Todd McFarlane went as far to say that if anyone in the comic industry hired him again he would quit comics forever.

Liefeld did eventually get work again, but I am still stunned as to why they would. He even relaunched a failed X-Force book that was terrible.

  3. Cyclops is dead though

And Rodney, i thought it was Emma Frost that had a baby with Scott (Cable)

What I dont get is why they have to reboot this. I mean, they could always continue the x-men origins wolverine character

    • Monty says:

Cable is the son of Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor (Jean Grey’s clone).

    • War-Journalist says:

      1. We never saw Scott’s body (or at least pieces)
      2. No, it was Jean. They had the child, it was infected with a cyber-organic virus, and they sent it to the future with some time-traveler who said they could cure him. And then they raised him in the future (unknown to him).
      3. I’m sure they’ll make some reference to the Origins character. As in, they just picked up the mangled pieces and sent him off to the failed-experiments camp where he first became Deadpool.

    • Kaneda979 says:

They have to reboot because the Origins version of him sucked big time. They want to do Deadpool right this time and show the rest of the world how truly awesome the comic book version of him really is.

      • Rodney says:

They don’t have to reboot. There were enough vague references and plot holes that they can script the real Wade into a new film.

They just have to pretend that Stryker was wrong about WeaponXI being Wade and that he was still out there. Wolverine smelled his scent on XI, but that could be part of the genetic experiments (he had Wade’s powers)

When I watch Wolverine, I pretend XI isn’t Wade and the film is more enjoyable.

The whole drive home John and I shared speculations on the film about how they can “fix” what they did with Deadpool.

      • Kaneda979 says:

LOL, ya, I didn’t think about that, you got a good point. I’m gonna try that in a few days, watch Wolverine and pretend XI isn’t really Wade.

But I’m still very glad they are making this spin off film for the Deadpool character and it being the true blue Deadpool. For me it’s an amazing amount of joy that something from X-Men is finally being rightfully told threw a movie. Which is one of the many reasons I love movies in the first place.

As much as I enjoyed X-Men 1 & 2, it still wasn’t enough of the real X-Men for me. The world should have a chance to see on the big screen how truly awesome and amazing the real X-Men really are. I can only hope that some day this will come true and like I was saying, for me this Deadpool movie is a step in the right direction. :)

      • Weapon XI IS Wade Wilson

Wade NEEDS to be weapon XI in order to be Deadpool

Its like having Peter Parker turn into Spider-Man without a spider biting him on the hand.

The weapon X project is what lead to him being Deadpool. They did ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with him in the movie. The only two things that weren’t right was the mouth sewing and the arm swords.

The next step is to take him to the workshop and torture him for failing his primary mission (Kill Wolverine and being an unsuccessful Mutant experiment), there they will strip him of his weapons and torture him, before he dies, his healing abilities grow and is unable to die, so he tries to kill himself and ending up killing everyone…once he does, he realizes we WON “The Deadpool Game” and adopts the name.

I saw absolutely nothing wrong with the Weapon X Wade… And a reboot is still logical. If people still dont get his origins and like him yet never read a comic book then thats their problem, MARVEL shouldnt give in to their ignorance and reboot him and give him new origins to please the people who get this shit wrong

      • I meant to say that the reboot is illogical

        As in, a bad idea.

If they reboot t, what will they do??

Show him get decapitated by Wolvie again? Show him as weapon XI again? Because all hat shit NEEDS to happen

      • Rodney says:

        I disagree James.

Deadpool may have been a weapon X test subject, and that much may still be true, but he never was Weapon XI (there never was one in the comics) and he never had the ability to teleport (that was a device in the comics and not for combat – just travel), have admantium bones, shoot beams out his eyes or sprout blades from his arms.

Wade signed up for the Weapon X program after discovering he had terminal cancer and they gave him treatments that gave him a healing factor. However the cancer treatments and experiements deformed his face leaving him disfigured.

I don’t agree that Deadpool needs to be Weapon XI, but I do agree that it is important that he was experimented on. Its part of what makes him Deadpool.

Weapon XI was so far removed from Deadpool that it was an embarassment to even temporarily give him the name.

      • I agree with your logic but i just dont think that its ENOUGH to reboot him.

Him getting a bunch of powers fit better then him having cancer in the X-MEN Origins Wolverine movie

After weapon X he gets tortured and fucked up in the workshop anyways, while this happens they can change him as much as they want.

They can always have a 10 second flashback of him having cancer and joining the X program in the Deadpool movie

I hate reboots. SO MUCH. Because then when you watch the original movie with the old character, its fucking distracting.
And then you watch the old one (in this case, xmen origins) and say “So THIS isnt the real version?” and the movie seems like its all bullshit. Its hard to explain. But its so confusing and distracting it takes away from the movie.

And reboots happen when they fuck up KNOWN characters, and REALLY fuck them up.

The few flaws can be easily fixable with the whole “Workshop torture and disfigurement”. And the cancer thing can still be introduced.

Liefeld’s involvement is more worrysome than assuring.

  5. Then, as soon as Liefeld leaves the building…

  6. leeloo says:

great. so deadpool will be grotesquely proportioned and have sockpuppet feet.

  7. Jay E says:

I only know Liefeld from Heroes Reborn and really enjoyed the series. I have also seen him post on social sites like Digg and Twitter under his own name which is rare for “big names” to do. He seems like a nice guy and talks with his fans online.

As such, can someone explain to me why I should hate Rob Liefeld? I’m not “behind-the-scenes of comic politics” follower so my only knowledge is his work (which I enjoyed) and limited social interaction.

  8. leeloo says:

hes also pretty known for ripping off other comic artists work.
he takes old marvel comics and traces the panels, and just changes the costumes/characters.
doesnt help his anatomy skillz any.
there are a couple of websites out there dedicated to showing the panels rips.
    google should find them.

  9. Kaneda979 says:

To me this is all AWESOME news and has made my day. Sounds like they are making the Deadpool movie we all want to see. Finally an X-men related character that might actually be done right on the big screen.

I hope the Venom reboot/spin-off movie turns out good as well.

Also I would LOVE to see Cable pop up somewhere in some X-Men related movie. And for his appearance to be a set up for a full on X-Force film.

  10. Kaneda979 says:

I was thinking, who is making the Deadpool movie, Fox or Marvel films?

If it is Fox then I am HUGELY surprised they are going with trusting a character’s source material this much for once. Which is what they should have done a LONG time ago with the X-Men. The X-Men movie series probably wouldn’t currently be in shambles right now if they had.

If it is Fox doing Deadpool, does this mean we can see more of this with their future Marvel movie projects, where we’ll actually get real movie versions of our favorite comic book characters from them?
