Avatar 2 Sequel Hints Already?

Posted by on 30. 09. 2009in News Chat

It’s so trendy to announce or hint at sequels before a film comes out. Its a subtle statement of confidence when they let it leak that they are already planning a sequel. They know it will be a hit. Kind of like when they planned for a sequel to Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li and Dragonball Evolution.

Filmonic shares:

If all the hype and marketing pays off Avatar could be a big earner for Fox, and they will no doubt want a sequel. James Cameron seems keen on an Avatar 2, and now producer Jon Landau has dropped a small hint at what we could see:

If the public likes Avatar, it’s a possibility. After all, here we are exploring the surface of the planet Pandora. The interior remains to be seen.

Clearly if Avatar gets a good boxoffice result they will want to make another go at it. That’s just what Hollywood does.

However I think there may be more motive to recoup some of the vast debt developing this uncanny gap technology that Cameron has been bragging about that is making Avatar a reality. This 90 minute tech reel will be a commercial for those wishing to also use the tech, and in that will be Cameron’s real money maker even if the film doesn’t overcome the costs of developing the tech.

Oh wow really!? The name of the planet is Pandora!? Hey let’s not come up with anything unique and clever. Lets just use something cheesy, cliched, overused, and old.

I didn’t see that coming!! This movie has rip off spray painted all over it. But then again I like to vent on things that look stupid.

I believe Avatar is using bad and good press to get the hype to go even further. Even the people that don’t find the footage released as of now to be anything special will still flock to the theaters just to see out of complete curiosity.

I do hope Avatar will blow us away. James Cameron is known for details and taking the next step. Even if I am not blown away I am sure I will be entertained.

If we’re not entertained I am sure we’ll live, we all live for this news. It does give us something to do.

Sure this movie is going to be a major tech demo for the technology, but strictly saying that just feels so much like its underhanding Cameron’s ability to weave an intriguing plot and make an excellent movie. Not saying that is what is being said here, it just sounds like when read it at face value.

Can someone explain to me in detail how box office profits work?

The reason I ask is because if this movie is as expensive as everyone says, I want to know how much money they’d need to actually break even. I heard Avatar costs $300 million or even more. So could this thing make, say $400 million worldwide, and be considered a bomb? Most movies would kill for that total gross, but I doubt that Avatar is going to get there. As I’ve said before, all the hype is about the technology, not the actual story. Not everyone can get to an IMAX, and I doubt that many people will make a concerted effort to get to an IMAX for this like they did for a movie like TDK or 300. If this can’t hold water in a 2D theater, it’s going to bomb and bomb HARD.

The film only costs that much because of the new tech he has been developing to bridge the uncanny gap.

Yes, this will likely be considered a “bomb” no matter how much it makes because it wont overcome that insurmountable budget, but Cameron doesn’t care.

He will more than make his money back in the dozen or so films that hire him for the tech.

Here is the thing I don’t understand. You have this sweet new movie ( or from what we have heard you do) and its not out till december.

You announcing in September/ October that you are already making a sequel. Doesn’t that diminish the point of having mass marketing and a huge media storm, when we already know there is going to be a second one, before we actually know if this 1st one is even worth it or has any merit.

    Am I right?

  6. Philipo says:

If they call it Avatar: Pandora’s Box I will scream “Fuck you Fox!” as loud as I can until I lose my voice.

Also what’s this going to do to Battle Angel Alita? I’ve personally always been more interested in Cameron’s take on that manga’s story and universe.

  7. katie says:

please make a sequel !!! I loved it
