Quick Thought On G.I. Joe

Posted by on 07. 08. 2009in News Chat

Ok, I just got back from the midnight showing of G.I. Joe. I’ll do my full review tomorrow because I must get to bed. For now I’ll say this: This is NOT a good movie. HOWEVER… it’s also not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Some of the worst acting I’ve ever seen in a movie (Good grief even the amazing Dennis Quaid looked like total wood in this thing) and some of the worst visual effects I’ve seen in a big budget film in a while… but some solid and fun action. More tomorrow.

  1. Tiglet says:

well suprise surprise, you were obviously blinded by your biased hate for that wayan brother and influenced by others just like with the transformers 2 movie. If I’m not mistaken that was much more solid fun and action with GOOD special effects.

    • John says:

Ummm… Tiglet. Do you even know what the word “biased” means? No really… do you know what it means?

How am I “biased”? What do I have to gain from this movie being bad? Do I win money if it’s bad? To say I’m “Biased” means I have a personal stake in the film. I don’t.

Not liking something doesn’t mean you’re “biased”. I went into it with an open mind. It was better than I thought it would be… but still not good. The movie has a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes now… are all those guys “biased” too? Are you biased if you liked it?

      Read a dictionary.

    • Film Fan says:

John clearly does not understand the meaning of the word ‘biased.’ Look it up in a dictionary and you will see that your comment is absurd.

    • John says:

      Hey Film Fan

      From the dictionary:

      Bias – noun
prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another usually in a way considerered to be unfair. “His political affiliation made him a biased judge”

Anyone who knows anything about me or The Movie Blog knows that I am predisposed favorable to sci-fi/action/comic book films. If anything I am biased for them.

I have no prejudice (bias) that would make me look at G.I. Joe unfavorably. In fact, the opposite is true.

Suggesting bias means you assert there is something about G.I. Joe (apart from the movie itself) that makes me prejudice against the movie. And that’s just not the case. Sooo.. my use of the term is actually 100% accurate.

Judging something on its own merritts is the exact opposite of bias. I have no pre-existing hatred of action films. I have no pre-existing hatred of the G.I. Joe property. Stephen Sommers never kicked my dog and no one is paying me to dislike it. There is simply no prejudice. What dictionary are you reading?

    • Hassleberry says:

      Owned by John.

    • Antonio says:

John, did you know the word gullible is not in the dictionary?
      :)

    • bigsampson says:

      * Main Entry: bi·ased
      * Function: adjective
      * Date: 1649

1 : exhibiting or characterized by bias; especially : prejudiced
2 : tending to yield one outcome more frequently than others in a statistical experiment
3 : having an expected value different from the quantity or parameter estimated

      fuck ya webster dictionary ftw!

    • Kaneda979 says:

I agree with John, he’s not being “biased”, he just didn’t like the movie very much, period.
If it bothers you that much then stop caring about what John says and everyone elses opinions aswell. Amusing you did infact see the movie yourself already and liked it, then good for you.

But believe it or not, everyone has their own opinions in this world about what they think is good and what’s not. Not everyone is going to agree with you and just because they don’t, does not make them “biased”, and if you think it does, then there is something seriously wrong with you.

And again, believe it or not, allot of people honestly didn’t like Transformers 2 very much at all, John included, not because others didn’t like it as well, but because it just wasn’t that good of a movie to them. The story for the most part sucked ass, with lots of plot wholes and needless carp. Did anyone else notice besides me that when the Constructicons formed Devastator and were fighting the twins and what not, that they were also fighting as their separate selves in the other battle? What the hell was that?

It’s no surprise that any self respecting fan of the original Transformers DID NOT like Transformers 2. Jetfire as an “old man”, WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING?!

  2. Aaronleaman says:

I think how he means bia’s as to the fact that you already thought/knew it would suck.

    • John says:

Dude… we all go into every movie thinking it’ll be either good or bad. That doesn’t mean you’re “biased”.

If director Stephen Sommers kicked my dog and I hated him personally for it… THEN I’d be biased against the movie. But I’m not… plain and simple.

    • Tiglet says:

but isn’t that (the dog story) the same if I say:

you thought this movie was going to suck because that wayan brother was in there…

    • John says:

      Hey Tiglet,

You said: but isn’t that (the dog story) the same if I say:

you thought this movie was going to suck because that wayan brother was in there…

That’s a fair example to bring up, but I disagree with the analogy. I have no prejudice against Wayan. He’s never done anything to me. I DO have an opinion of his work thus far, but that is solely based on his works merritts.

That certainly effects the EXPECTATIONS I have for his future performances, but not my opinion of his performances.

    • Rodney says:

I thought 8Mile would suck for having Eminem in it.

That isnt a bias. Its an opinion.

And I loved that movie. And the music.

There is difference between MAKING yourself dislike a movie (prejudice or biased) and being able to have an opinion and being open to having that opinion changed.

John thought he would hate it. That was his opinion. He didn’t hate it. So how are you considering he is biased against it?

  3. John says:

Basically, calling someone “biased” because they don’t have the same opinion as you is the tactic of the mentally weak.

    • Soul says:

Ask him about the Anniversary if you guys want biased :)

P.S. GI Joe was god awful. There’s your second opinion. Favorite quote… “France is gonna be upset.”

    • Phil Gee says:

Didn’t you find it incredibly educational Soul? I sure learned a lot about nanomachines. They can do ANYTHING :)

  4. Corey says:

John was there anyone or anything in the film that stole the show for you?

    • John says:

Easily the best part of the film was Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes. They should have just done the whole movie on these two.

    • Phil Gee says:

Wow, I thought that was easily one of the worst parts. Their flashbacks have nothing to do with the story. It’s just lip service to the fans. The only poor sections of the action are when those two are fighting. It’s all played in close ups and quick cuts just like Transformers.

All Snake Eyes has to do is look cool but that plastic mouth they gave him really was dreadful.

    • John says:

      Hey Phil,

I agree the flashbacks were stupid… but I thought the fights were excellent, and Storm Shadow may have been my favorite character in the film.

  5. Ryan says:

Im curious to see your review john and the strengths. Ive heard a few things positive so far.

  6. Rare Addict says:

Sounds like I won’t be disappointed, at least, since those were essentially my expectations from the get-go. :P Lookin’ forward to reading/listening to your full review, John.

  7. Film Fan says:

John you put way to much energy into these petty responses. In this case, being biased has nothing to do with what you have to gain from this movie being bad, period. This is not the only time you use language falsely. I can’t put energy into trying to fix the mind of a child. You will probably just say “you are putting words in my mouth” as you usually do.

Unfortunately, you delete most of my posts if they have any disagreement with what you have to say. Such as the one yesterday (the article ‘Paramount Hiding G.I. Joe From Cirtics) when you responded to one of the posters calling them a “stupid ass,” and some other childish obseneties. I suggested that if you want to run a respectable movie blog you should refrain from comments of this sort. But this was deleted, also along with your original post which hopefully means you did learn something but I have a feeling that this was only a matter of covering yourself since you were clearly out of line. It will only be a matter of time before you call someone a stupid ass for fucking idiot again. If you want any sort of success in your work you need to take your time and think things through. In other words, be mature. But for you I would just say, grow up.

    • zzzzzzzzzzz says:

Go to bed film fan…..its past your bedtime.

    • Movie Fan says:

Sheesh, cry me a river. Sounds like the only bias here is yours against John. No one is forcing you to read this blog that you find so disreputable.

You wrote: “It will only be a matter of time before you call someone a stupid ass for fucking idiot again.”

      “…stupid ass for fucking idiot…”?

What does that mean? Whose is ass is for fucking? I’m confused. Please stop using language falsely.

    • Grave says:

What are you trying to prove by insulting John and his site? So g.i. joe was bad and had a few good merits so what? Its the same level as Super Mario Bros, or Street Fighter the movie. I seen the movie and I agree that it by no means was good. So now you think Im like John’s best friend thats why Im defending him? In fact their are lots of things we disagree with but I respect his opinion and not try to call him out. Your trying to give him tip on having a sucessful blog? He has thousands of people coming here and leving comments. I’d be lucky if i got one or two on mine. However, who do you think you are telling him how to make his site a sucess? You have your own blog? How much traffic you get on it? You ever been on a panel with other web masters at a convention? Did you get asked to play an extra in films? Did you make two films? If you dont like the site then dont come here.

    • Film Fan says:

This was intended to be a direct response to his previous comment and had to do with him calling others bloggers things such as stupid ass, fucking idiots etc… It also had to do with my posts being unnecessarily deleted. You do have good points, and I respect your intention but my comment seems out of place since it wasn’t placed under our previous exchange. Also, I will be taking the advice in your last line.

    • John says:

      Film Fan,

I have never called another blogger names. EVER. Major rule of mine.

Second. I have rules in this comments section. HOWEVER, if someone decides to take a shot at me personally (like suggesting I have no integrity when it comes to giving my opinions on movies) I reserve the right to shoot back at them and I make no appologies for it.

Thirdly, if you decide to put up a comment that has nothing to do with the topic of the post, it clearly says in the rule that those comments are subject to being deleted.

Fourthly, my definition of the phrase “biased” is 100% correct as I have shown. You just saying “you put way too much energy into your responses” doesn’t change that.

And wow… fifth: If you want any sort of success in your work you need to take your time and think things through.

Ummm…hehe… is that… ummm… some sort of joke? If I want any sort of success?

May I suggest you try getting a clue and MAYBE doing a bit of research before embarrassing yourself by making statements like that again?

I have NEVER insulted ANYONE on my site for their opinions on the topics of movie. But like I said… if you or anyone decide to break the rules of the site and start making comments about ME PERSONALLY… then I reserve the right to either delete those comments or to fire back.

    • Chris says:

I support you John. You have the experience and I respect your opinion even if I disagree with it. Alot about film comes down to personal preferences and we can’t expect everyone to agree with our tastes or our opinions. Don’t let these guys bring you down.

    • Jarred says:

I seriously can’t believe how much abuse you put up with on this site John. And I’ve been reading this site for over 4 years and I’ll say right now I’ve never seen you insult or put down a commentor on your site that didn’t start things by insulting you. Not once.

Some people are trolls John. You know this. Don’t let them bother you.

    • Cid Draper says:

On August 7th, Film Fan wrote:
“John you put way to much energy into these petty responses.” And then not only proceeded to write two paragraphs immediately following this statement but responded to another response later. Pot, meet Kettle.

  8. slumdog94 says:

So John what would you give it from 1/10?
Will it make your worst films of the year list?
Speaking of that, what happened to your “Best and Worst of the Year So Far” list?

    • Grave says:

I give it a 3/10 because women in tight outfits in high heels gets my attention. Some of the action was good. Thats all the rest of the film blew whale chunks.

  9. Geno says:

So pretty much the kids will like it as well as your basic audience. But filmgoers and fanboys may not like it as much. Is that pretty much your take on it John?

  10. cloud720 says:

I thought the start of the movie was pure garbage. But at some point I was just like this action is kind of cool. Like isn’t that what G I Joe all about? This still could have been a much better movie. Like no matter how good the action is its hard to forgive bad acting, horrible dialogue, and a ridiculous story. They could have at least made some of the characters likable, I only liked snake eyes and that’s probably cause he never opened his mouth.

    Off topic.

I saw part of a perfect getaway and Chris Hemsworth is a big guy. I could buy him as thor. I was disappointed by his performance in Star Trek but I’m starting to think maybe it was just his dialogue in that movie. Not that he was anything great in perfect getaway but he can definitely act.

  11. Lawrence says:

    I just saw this movie.
    I’d give it 3 out 10 stars.
I agree with John’s assessment. The only thing worth seeing was the Snake Eyes vs Storm Shadow fight. I’d like to say that Joseph Gordon Levitt played Rex/The Doctor/Cobra Commander well. He nailed the part. Props to Rachel Nichols as Scarlett, wow she is hot and should be considered for the Lara Croft/Wonder Woman roles if these movies are to be made for the big screen.
Other than these, I’d say the movie is bloated with effects and slambang action sequences that left me kinda confused and dazed in the theater. I wouldn’t be surprised if this flick bombs at the box office and that a sequel wont made.

    • Matticus says:

I think it will do big business, probably get sequels (unfortunately). One need look no further than The Transformers films to see that America eats this stuff up.

  12. Marla Singer says:

I cant beleive there are people arguing for the good of G.I. Joe. It’s got failure written all over it in epic proportions! If you cant see that from the trailer then go ahead and spend $10-$15 and 2 hours of your time to see the movie.

  13. Evan says:

How was Sienna Miller in the movie?

  14. michael says:

    I was expecting as much…hollywood summer filler………

  15. Tony says:

Yes I figured Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow would be the best of the whole film. I’m still debating whether or not to see this or wait for it on dvd.

  16. AARON says:

I figured if John didn’t like it some guys would say “Oh you just don’t wanna look bad for thinking it would suck”. But I believe john, because I’m seeing it today and i’m not excited

  17. Iam Wright says:

I’m glad to hear that the film is not as bad as what the trailers made it out to seem. And when did this become the ‘Hate on John’ Blog?

  18. John says:

In John’s defense, he said that it was still not a good movie, but not as bad as he expected. Considering his prediction of the move has been swayed, it seems to me that he may not have a bias. Especially since he probably has a predisposition to like movies like this. In everyone else’s defense and coming from psychological research, there is no such thing as an unbiased observer, merely less biased or aware of biases.

  19. Fico says:

Sorry bro, but if you already DONT LIKE the WAYANS brothers movie resume and you already thought that the movie would suck…and you’ve heard/read bad things about it (that adds to knowing that it was gonna suck…then you had a couple of things
that made you biased against GIJOE…

biased – doesnt mean you have a personal stake on the topic.
it means you where favorable or negative already for certain reasons before going in (a movie)….

LOL – anyways just more wood into the fire…
JOHN vs FILM FAN love it hahaha
    saludos desde Puerto Rico JOHN

  20. Fico says:

John, at least tell me was it better than STREET FIGHTER with JCV? hahaha has to be cmon? BLANKA storyline anyone? lol

    • erocka says:

Street fighter with Jean Claudde venereal disease was way better than the recent chun li caka. … plus, Kylie Minogue was in it.

  21. Kings says:

    GO WATCH HURT LOCKER!!!!!

  22. erocka says:

hey guys what’s…..OMG!!! what the hell is all of dis shouting!…. Dear Film Fan, I respect John’s opinion, he’s very successful in what he does here, he’s one of THE longest running movie blogs, and one of the only ones I go to. He posts an update or opinion on a film… And for your enjoyment, you read it, I do not appreciate you coming to this site and tanking Mr. Campea for his opionion… as he says “film is subjective”. Add to that, if you post a comment that is totale garbage, like he says, why would he want geriatric crap on his site that you’ve poo’d out? Focus on reading the bible more, cuz Jesus loves you sir! lol… that or write something that adds to the convo, not takes away. boomdang malaka teinefto

  23. T-Vo says:

I don’t care. The guys at Aint it cool news, says it kicks ass, and they’re geek cred is much more reliable than anyone on this site. Yooooooo Joe!

  24. Fear the wrath of john! says:

im just a casual visitor, come to the site everyday, check some stuff out and leave.
but i now have enormous respect for john and how he so elegantly schooled some disgruntled readers today. props to john.
and to make this relevant to GI-Joe….baroness is hot.

  25. Tomi says:

I think it’s a sad day when people get so up in arms about critics deriding movies like GI Joe or Transformers 2 (Ebert). These movies are total popcorn trash with little redeeming value or creativity except for those who love to “turn their brain off”. Sure, they’re lots of fun…so who cares if a movie critic doesn’t like it. It’s ridiculous how offended people get about others thinking these movies suck.

  26. sdn says:

Dennis Quaid looked like wood, huh? I think that many actors end up lowering their performance to the level of the cast around them, because to not do so would ruin the “believability” of the world they’ve created. You can’t have one guy doing awesome and the rest of the characters lame because it would be too jarring for the audience. On the other hand, some actors seem to be able to bring up the level of the entire cast around them. Harrison Ford, Russel Crowe, and Tom Hanks strike me as these types.

    • sdn says:

Maybe you need to learn the difference between “what should happen” and “what ends up happening”. Either that or learn to read a message before you respond. Like it or not, not every actor has the ability to raise the game of the other actors around them, especially when the other cast is Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans, and Sienna Miller.

Good actors lowering their acting to the overall tone of the movie happens all the time. See Jon Voight’s performance in Transformers.

Your knee-jerk reaction of calling my statement ignorant reveals your overall lack of intelligence or comprehensive ability.

    • Crews says:

I’m not one for verbal jousting over how much more intelligent I am than others, so let’s inhibit the foreplay and stay on topic. You said the following: “You can’t have one guy doing awesome and the rest of the characters lame because it would be too jarring for the audience.”

Allow me to bring the 2003 film Gangs of New York into play here. Daniel Day-Lewis, arguably the greatest actor alive at the moment, played a supporting role and played it damn well. Leonardo DiCaprio, whom I believe is a very solid actor, gave probably the worst performance of his career. Overall it made for a poor film, with one source of actual entertainment throughout the entire ordeal, and that being Daniel’s performance.

The point I’m trying to make is, even though actors in supporting roles may fail to impress, that does not mean actors in leading roles need to lower their standards because they are surrounded by those with inadequate capabilities. That is what I meant in saying “lead by example”. Unfortunately, Dennis Quaid is no Daniel Day-Lewis, and therefore I believe is incapable of cleaning up the mess that Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans, and Sienna Miller left behind.

Now, we could argue all day about what should have happened and what ended up happening, but the bottom line is Dennis Quaid (like you said) could not make up for the slacking performances that his fellow actors gave. My hopes revealed the opposite, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles.

    • El Zilcho says:

Quaid shouldn’t have to make up for everyone else’s shitty performances. Maybe some of those actors should just, I don’t know, learn how to act.

    • sdn says:

The difference there is that Gangs of New York is a completely different calibre of film than GI Joe. It was directed by Martin Scorsese and nominated for 10 Oscars. So Daniel Day Lewis didn’t really have to tone down his performance to the level of the movie because it was such high quality, even if Leo didn’t put in his best performance (which at his worst is 100x better than Channing Tatum’s best).

If Daniel Day Lewis somehow had to be cast as General Hawk, do you think he would bring the same level of intensity to the character? I don’t – I think he’d end up looking like a fool because the level of acting around him couldn’t match it. Unless, he’s one of the rare types of actors that could do things behind the scenes like coaching the other actors to bring up the game of the entire cast.

  27. scoville says:

Everyone who knows anything about a movie before seeing it goes into it with some sort of bias. The only way to be totally objective is to not know anything about it before watching it.

  28. Ian says:

    How was Christopher Eccleston?

  29. spiderfreak182 says:

i think john is right and wrong, the movie sucks le bawls, but i dissagree with the solid fun action part, cause for me, even the action was laughable. i thought about walking out halfway into the movie. I was expecting bad, but not this bad…

  30. Kristina says:

Sommers’ films usually are like that: a few bright spots, mostly cheesy, bad acting, etc. I’ll pass.

  31. Brian says:

John, I think people are just trying to get a rise out of you. Of course you’re entitled to your opinion to either like or dislike something.

  32. Chisox says:

The problem I have with a critics review including Jhon’s is that they are too generalized. If Pirates of the Carribean 2 and 3, Spiderman 3, and ROTF are bad then what score would you give a film like The Unborn or The legend of Chun LI?

  33. SlaahBeast says:

Everything is biased. There is no such thing as an unbiased opinion. It’s useless screaming things like “You’re biased!”.

  34. chris....the real one (also a black guy) says:

how was it in comparison to the mummy and mummy returns…i really enjoyed how goofy and fun they were, if this is as fun as they were im sold..

    • Grave says:

You cant make much of a comparison since G.I. Joe is a completely diffrent kinda movie all together. However, you could compair the orginal black and white Mummy movies to Sommers Mummy movies nicely.

  35. Giant says:

I ate a puppy once, does that make me biased?

  36. Soul says:

I have a question… since WHEN DOES ICE SINK!?!????

  37. chris says:

i guess i lack the imagination (or drugs) to believe this was anything near entertaining… bad cg, acting, stor,y dialoge, plot twists, and ridiculous moments aside.

  38. Max McCormick says:

Well, I just have to say that I understand 100% someone haiting this movie. Every single argument that John has against it is 100% justified. However, I did ( For some ungodly reason ) like the movie. The visual effects were horendous. But I thought it actually fit the movie well for that. It made it feel like a live-action cartoon. Some movies dont pull that off. In any other movie it wouldnt work. But I thought it worked here. The acting was terrible, I will give you that. But again, all of the negatives kind of fit well to me here. I dont know if that makes any sense to anyone. But maybe someone will get what I mean.

    • SlashBeast says:

I don’t think the special effects turned out bad because of an intention of making it look like a “live-action cartoon”.

  39. probitionate says:

    A little bit of levity:

Someone commenting on ‘Julie & Julia’, and Meryl Streep’s contribution to the film:

“G.I. Joe probably would have been better if Streep had just been in it hahaha”

  40. probitionate says:

    Some levity:

As commented on regarding Meryl Streep in ‘Julie & Julia’:

“G.I. Joe probably would have been better if Streep had just been in it hahaha”

  41. Jack says:

    Where is the review?

  42. Jim says:

I thought the trailers looked stupid, I always thought the premise was stupid, once again I made the right call by keeping my money.

  43. tFRblog says:

As far as the movie goes, I seen a test screening back in April and from what I can tell it ddnt change much, it was a steaming pile then and it’s worse now knowing they had all this time to tweek it.

The Perfect Getaway >>> GI Joe

  44. David says:

my opinion of the movie is that it was perfect for what it was taking a toy line/cartoon and bringing it to the big screen and no I don’t mean adapting i felt like I was watching a cartoon with real people in it and thats all I wanted out of this. Why would you expect a strong story and intense meaningful dialogue. And I know someone will want to respond with something about transformers being the same origin(basically) and yes it is but that was all I expected out of either of them and I got much more with the first one and well the second one was neither a good movie or a good cartoon but it was cool to watch. thats my input feel free to backlash at me for not taking cinema seriously

  45. Jarrad says:

GI Joe is up there as one of my favourite movies of the year mainly because it promises action and unlike some other action films, you can actually tell whats happening.

Its an action movie that’s meant to entertain and not change your lives, so I think some people are getting a bit critical……if ya don’t like action and things that go boom, go watch something else.

  46. Grave says:

What about Street Fighter The Legend of Chun-Li? That film was sooo bad it made the last Street Fighter seems better. The orginal film was hailed as the worst game based movie ever. Well that was until House of the Dead lol.

  47. Jeremy K. says:

Actually people got mad at John for not liking it, and thus he responded appropriately. If everybody said they loved the movie and John posted that he also loved the movie would you be writing something different? Just because he may share common views with other people, that does not make his opinion any less credible. Your comment is probably worse than anything I have ever seen John post, to be honest. It’s quite nonsensical.

  48. SlashBeast says:

Where did you get Michael Moore from?

  49. Jeremy K. says:

Do you even read comments? There are still plenty of comments on here not deleted that disagree with John. Selective reading, like selective memory, much? He even left one that straight up attacks John for just following the crowd when it comes to reviews.

If a comment gets deleted it’s usually not due to a disagreement, its usually due to somebody being blatantly rude and insulting to somebody.

Think before you comment, rather than blatantly spewing BS that can be disproved simply by reading up or down a few comments.

  50. Jeremy K. says:

True, because the first comment on this post is easy to miss, let fall through the cracks, and/or got tired of reading. Anyway you look at it, if your going to accuse somebody of something then you had better damn well read everything prior to the comment else you make an ass of yourself. Ignorance does not excuse somebody from false accusations.

And, no, I am not trying to insult anybody here. I’ve made an ass of myself plenty of times for making false accusations over something I need not fully read. I speak from experience.
