New Brewsters Millions Adaptation Coming

I recall the days when Richard Pryor was comedy gold. One of my favourite films he did was Brewster’s Millions. Well today I discovered that a new writing team has been tapped in re-making the film.

But they are not actually remaking Pryor’s film, rather they are once again adapting the story from the classic 1902 novel.

Hollywood Reporter shares:

The 1902 novel, which became a play in 1906, has proved to be a popular film subject, with this project being the eighth incarnation. Popular versions include the 1945 film starring Dennis O’Keefe, directed by Allan Dwan, and the 1985 comedy starring Richard Pryor and John Candy and directed by Walter Hill.

The story centers on a man who inherits $1 million from a rich grandfather. When a rich uncle who hated the grandfather also passes away, the will leaves the young man $7 million — but under the condition he spends the grandfather’s million within a year and not end up with any assets from the spending spree.

Michael Diliberti and Matthew Sullivan are on deck to write “Brewster’s Millions,” the next attempt to adapt George Barr McCutcheon novel set up at Warner Bros.

I didn’t realize the Pryor film was the seventh attempt on the story. I suspect that many people my age will likely view this as a remake of the 1985 comedy.

I agree. The first film with Pryor was awesome. You know that would be a good film to see on Forgotten Fridays.

  2. Robb Wo says:

You’re right, John! I would’ve been suckered into thinking it would be a remake of Pryor’s “classic.” I’m Glad today’s filmgoers will get to enjoy it. one of my favorite films from back in the day. maybe you should have saved this for ‘forgotten friday!’

Meh, I dont need to see another adaption or remake of this story. Given present days economic troubles I cant see this film as something alot of people would like to see.

This is actually the perfect kind of film to remake. It was really good, but not quite a classic. Any thoughts on casting? Regardless of the basis of the remake (I had no idea it was the 7th take either!), many fans will still compare this to Pryor/Candy (two GODS of comedy!)

I could see them putting Jack Black in Pryor’s role. I hope not.

Ten Million, ten million, ten million dollars! Ten million, Ten million, ten million dollars…

The only way that is funny is with two MASTERS of comedy.

Leave the baseball angle out, and maybe, just maybe someone like Chris Rock and Denis Leary could make this into the modern classic that BM should be, that is to say, I love this movie and in fact is one of my favorite memories from tweenhood (12 yo), I movie hopped from BM to Top Gun.
