G.I. Joe 2 Heads for Development

The ball is already rolling on G.I. Joe 2. Cobra has risen, and its time to find out if this really was just half the battle.

Fused Film says:

Paramount’s vice chairman Rob Moore confirmed that a sequel is set to go into development soon. The entire cast is contractually obligated to return for a second film. The film’s director, Stephen Sommers, who was rumored to have been fired during the editing stages of the first installment, is not set to come back at this time.

The interesting thing is that they haven’t already started working on it, its just about to start development. In this fast paced world where sequels are announced with the trailer for the first film, I am surprised that they didn’t already have a script on the shelf ready to move forward.

Stephen Sommers is about to become REALLY unpopular, but not in that “we like to make fun of Michael Bay” kind of unpopular, but rather the professional unpopular. John will calmly and briefly address this later. But lets just say I don’t expect him to return for the sequel.

That alone should be a boost for interest based on the reactions I have read so far.

But also, keep in mind that these adaptations and the close cousin superhero films have been taking a brighter turn lately. They are more widely accepted as “real” films and there is no reason G.I Joe couldn’t have been one of them.

Perhaps they are building on the reaction and feedback and hope to make a better sequel using this just to get their feet wet.

We will know they are listening if they take the lips off of SnakeEye’s mask in the next film.

Curious to hear your take on Sommers.

    • Matticus says:

      Agreed. Dangle that carrot, Rodney.

    • Clair says:

Considering John’s tweets and Rodney’s short comment in here, I am curious..

    • Rodney says:

Personally I think Sommers is just talking out his ass. Nothing he said makes sense, and just hurts his repuation as a professional.

However John did a video blog today that is posted a couple up from this article that shares his views on it all.

Not too surprising. By the end of GIJOE, I felt like the whole movie was setup for the actual story (I liked the somewhat subtle cobra sigil on the submarine…blink and you miss it).

As a huge fan of the comic (I used to wait by the mailbox when I knew it was that time of the month for a new issue) I was actually not TOO dissapointed with the film. It was what it was. I enjoyed the nods to both the comic and cartoon. I’ll watch it again.

  3. Grave says:

Yes, yes and yes! I want another GI Joe movie, a better one.I want a re-boot! The only actors I change are Duke, Destro, Baroness. They were the weakest and I give props to the actor who play Cobra Commander he did an alright job. Im also glad to hear rummblings that Sommer might not return. In the next film I want Stalker, Major Blood, Wild Bill and Sargent Slaughter.

I agree If Snake Eye doesnt have lips ill be over joyed for 2 reasons. One is that the studio is listening to fans finally. The second is Snake Eyes would look much cooler.

  4. Phil Gee says:

I had a good time with the film but I don’t think we’re going to be getting an X-Men 2 next time around, more like a Tomb Raider 2. I just don’t see a quality screenwriter and top class director coming onto a Joe sequel. Brett Ratner will be attached for a while, just you watch.

And if Sommers comes back then it’ll just be fun to see how far he’ll push the insanity this time.

  5. SlashBeast says:

    It was inevitable.

    • Rodney says:

I didn’t think a sequel was that much of an assumed thing.

It only made $100m worldwide and needs to hit about $200m just to break even on production and advertising costs.

I don’t know that it was inevitable. But it looks like its happening anyways.

    • Grave says:

I think if they got a producer and director with some balls and a brain you can make a great gi joe movie for 150 mil or less.

    • 1-7 says:

If Ghost Rider can get a sequel, anything can.

  6. dax says:

I don’t know if GI Joe 2 is 100% certain.
The Sunday drop was larger than expected, and hopefully GI JOE 2 will hold up well during the coming weeks. THis was an expensive movie with a huge marketing campaign. There’s been a lot of bad word of mouth and I think it might not even break 100 million domestic.

I really want to see a GI Joe 2. I hope it happens, but i am having doubts about it right now.
Next weekend will be the test. If it makes around 100 million domestic, I am almost certain that a sequel won’t be made.

  8. Are they going to try to get Van Damme in this one to do some breakdancing?
