Star Wars: The Old Republic Trailer

I’m so angry right now I could kick a puppy (and I love puppies). Why am I so mad? Because I just watched the trailer (it’s been out for a little while now… but I’m so bitter against all things Star Wars right now I’ve avoided watching it) for the new Star Wars game: “Star Wars: The Old Republic”. Am I mad because it sucked? No… I’m mad because it’s so freaking amazing!!!!

So why does that make me mad? Because if they put one ounce of thought into the actual prequel movie that they put into this little meaningless trailer my beloved Star Wars franchise would still be awesome (as it is, only the first three movies exist in my mind… the rest of the Star Wars Universe is dead to me now). Seriously… watch this video if you haven’t already:

  1. I like it, why? because its a new generation George is getting old and doing things in computer is cheap you have to pay actors and all that stuff to do the stunts and all that I know you might think this is Bull but whats it going to be like in 40 more years from now?

  2. why would new attachments to a franchise make you hate it? that’s like saying you hate a hockey team because they’re losing now.
if you hate the Star Wars franchise because the newer movies were bad, that’s your fault not theirs. only you (not you personally, you in general) can allow newer things to affect older things. the original trilogy is still great. the video game stories are good and so is the toyline.

on that note, this game will most likely suck, like most Star Wars games. this is just a cool trailer. the gameplay probably sucks big time.

  3. In my opinion, the knights of the old republic games are the best of the star wars game saga, i’ve beat the first 2 and i effin loved them. I hope this game won’t be as horrible “The Force Unleashed” was. My favorite aspect of these games is that you can choose your own path and make your own decisions. I just hope they let us do that in this game, and not jew us like they did in “The Force Unleashed”.
Peace out, and reply to my message. ONE LOVE!

  4. I agree with the thought of the Prequels should have started during the Clone Wars with Anakin and Obi alreay being friends. Anakin being this great warrior/pilot, a Han Solo type. To Obi being the by the book guy. Kind of like a buddy cop Dynamic between the two. They still could have had some mystery of where Anakin came from and who were his parents. Liam Neeson should have been a Sith Lord(Count Dooko). And maybe fit Darth Maul in there still somehow just because he was so badass and I thought it was horrible how they killed him off after the first movie and he is replaced by an old man(a fanboy acting legend) but an old man. Darth Maul could have rivaled Darth Vader in popularity if they maintained him for three movies.

  5. @ John: WOW! as a VFX enthusiast i must say i loved the animation and i loved the models. I wish we would see a movie made that way! I didnt even watch clone wars cuz the look is so fuckin shitty! it looks to much like a cartoon i know it was intended to look that way but for me it sucked! This looks much better :D and the slomos wow! I’m totally with you John!!! But i still dont know your thoughts on Terminator: Salvation :( did you say anything about it anywhere? I guess i missed it :( I think the story was a lil weak and the dialogues too but it was supposed to be an action blockbuster and from that point of view it was really really entertaining i think from me: 7,5 / 10
I liked the Sets, the VFX, the editing, the camara, the cast, and the T-800 Model 101 Cameo was so cool :D

  6. Someone HELP!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?

I played KOTOR and KOTOR2 and don’t know much about this game. That trailer was FUCKING AWESOME! THat’s the coolest lightsaber action I’ve ever seen….Yes, it’s better than the prequel fights.

So how does an online game like this work? I gotta find out more….I’m going to end up watching that trailer 100X. I about creamed my pants. Why didn’t Lucas make a movie like that? It’s all CG, but fuck I’d watch it.

    1. One more thing…ARe we going to see the characters and story from the 1st two KOTOR’s? Revan and the twist with his story in the 1st game still has me smiling…I loved that game…

    2. Q:How does Star Wars: The Old Republic relate to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic?

A:Star Wars: The Old Republic takes place approximately three hundred years after the events of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR). At the conclusion of the Jedi Civil War in KOTOR, Revan disappeared into unknown space in search of a great threat to the Republic, an expanding Sith Empire led by a mysterious Emperor who planned vengeance for his ancient Jedi enemies. Revan never returned from unknown space, but the Sith Empire did, kicking off a war with the Republic that lasted for decades. Now, despite the uneasy truce created by the Treaty of Coruscant, the tension among the divided star systems is threatening to once again tear the galaxy apart.

  7. I’ve always been a Star Wars fan, and yeah the prequels and the cgi movie did dissapoint me. But I love the KOTOR they were awesome so I can’t wait for this game. I will give up WOW for this game in a heartbeat! I think the next movies should be based on the Old Republic era or even a series would be great.

  8. Yeah, that pretty much should have been Darth Vader in the prquels. He should have become Vader at the end of episode one and he could have evolved over the next two films into the Vader of the original trilogy. Sigh. What could have been. There was more drama, excitment and better dialogue in that 3 minute video game trailer than in the entire prequel trilogy.

    1. Exactly. If a new movie was made that was in the style of this kick ass trailer, it would even bring in new fans.

  9. I’m way late on this but John i totally agree with you, i’m just too unwilling to let go of all the great memories from childhood and continue to hope that someday a Star Wars movie that lives up to it’s potential will be made. The cruelest thing i’ve seen in years was what you guys did on April Fool’s Day. I almost cried – Okay! So i did cry…by myself…in my room…into my Star Wars: A New Hope pillow case.

  10. I still think back to when Lucas said he would direct the first one, then hand off the other 2 to someone else, like he did with the original trilogy. Too bad that never happened. I think that never happened because he didn’t want some one else to out do him.

  11. I totally share your anger right now John.

but I refuse to buy this game, seeing as how its a mmorpg I know I will no longer have a social life if I buy it, not like I have much of one right now, but I know if I buy this game I will never see the light of day again.

    1. Allot of newer MMOs, like World Of Warcraft, have settings you can make in your account to help control your length of game time. ;) BioWare will probably implement this type of feature into the game as well.

  12. Terrific simply TERRIFIC

Hey by the way, does anyone know if there is any truth to the rumors I’ve been hearing about another three star wars films coming out?

  13. When I first saw this trailer the other day, I thought to myself “Please George, let these guys make a full length CGI animated movie” ala Final Fantasy ( the japanese one, not the american one).

  14. I disagree with John on the part of the three prequels. I personally love the prequels. But aside from that difference, John is still dead on. This story trailer is above and beyond what the prequels are, by far.

As much as I love the prequels, I agree that if they put as much thought into them as this trailer has in it…

I can’t even begin to imagine what we would have come up with.

  15. Seeing this trailer i realized two things, how much i want a Wii Motion Plus enabled Star Wars-game and how much i want a movie set in this time with a fullout war between the Jedi and Sith

  16. Yeah John, that trailer IS amazing! I knew you’d like it. Oh and that trailer isn’t “meaningless”; it gives hope for all of us gamers to play an amazing MMO :) Why watch the Star Wars galaxy when you can be a part of it?

  17. I didn’t dig the trailer. Not because it wasn’t good… just because it lacks in consistancy from the original movies. Like it brings up questions as to why Vader isn’t a high flyin’ Kung-Fu kickin’ ass-beater?

It’s cool in a different Universe, and if the orginal movies were able to do those things, then it would make sense… but they weren’t.

    1. vader in the original movies is older, we all do things a little different when we get older, I think their was a time when yoda didn’t have a walking stick and would run around showing off his acrobatics, but when you get old you only jump when you have to

    2. Vader was cut to pieces and burned so bad that he had to be in a suit that done his breathing for him…He couldn’t do all the things he’d done before he was injured…So he changed his fighting style. Anyway trailer looks amazing and I will be playing that game!

    3. I think what you meant to point out is the inadequacies of the original films and not how this new trailer is less because of it.

To say the new fighting style is inconstant with the original in the star wars universe is curious. As there are so many inconsistencies through out the films and games. To let this prevent you from enjoying a obviously superior piece of work is a loss on your part i think.

    4. haha ya ya i just read all the anwes to question…”why Vader isn’t a high flyin’ Kung-Fu kickin’ ass-beater? ”

well lucas himself explained all this before…and wether the rest of the fanboys like it he is the man who is responsible for the integral part of the univers …he basically stated that the technology wasnt there in the early days to make vader or skywalker as agile as he intended them to be….so all you guys saying he was beat up, old, burnt…are way the fuck off…sorry guys your e peens have gotten smaller.

  18. im with you on this one john! this trailer is AMAZING. the way star wars shouldve been.

Darren J Seeley, i enjoyed the star wars movies too… BUT. i think what john is trying to say is that if they treated the movie like this trailer, star wars would not just have been enjoyable for me (us), but it would’ve been life changing. something on the same level as Lord of the rings. coz seriously man, just because we enjoyed the new star wars, doesn’t make it good. i enjoyed it only because im a fan of the original. but if the first 3 didn’t exist, i would’ve thought it was complete garbage.

    1. To be fair, I’ll make Jar Jar jokes like anyone else. But I felt that as dumb as the character was, the character served a story purpose. In addition, his clumsiness was commented on by other characters. Considering later on the Court Jester gave a glowing recommendation to the new “Emperor”- for me, it was near appropriate, so I never had a serious problem with Jar Jar.

(Other than he was created to sell toys and whose image graced cans of Mountain Dew )

Could ‘Phantom Menace’ been better? Sure. But overall, I found no fault with it. The dumb title ‘Attack Of The Clones’- could it have been better? Of course.

I didn’t have a problem with Anakin growing more impatient and bitter. A lot of people, I understand, did. But the path to ‘The Dark Side’ had to start somewhere. So I never had much issue with it. Did I like some of the ‘dumb’ stuff, like Yoda berating Obi Wan in front of the kids? The ‘American Graffitti’ reference?
Yes, it bugged me. But I liked the film overall.

Revenge Of The Sith was the best of the three. I’ve heard many a compelling discussion that the New Trilogy should have started there (or perhaps with the previous film) …

But here’s where, as not only a fan of Star Wars, but films in general, which bothers me:

      1) I am sick and tired of seeing how one or two minor supporting elements/characters in one film cause an entire film to be horrible overall, especially if those elements/characters serve the story overall.

Film is subjective, but I am constantly baffled how most ignore the good stuff in a film and focus on one negative or two. Few, ( if any) films are perfect.

      2) I know Shock was a moron, and nobody puts him in a choke hold to visit John’s site. Still, when the charge (and common stereotype myth) is brought up that since I (and others) are over 28 and thus “cannot enjoy” a film or series of films because of it, I take great offense. What new films am I supposed to not enjoy? Am I that much out of a loop? If I liked or loved a film that was also aimed at another possible demographic does that mean…what exactly? What if various demographics agree or disagree with me? What does that mean?

  19. wow, that was awesome…

just the quality of the CGI was great, i could watch a whole CG star wars movie done this way.
    picture that in 1080p…

  20. Get those animators, get whoever storyboarded it, get a descent sci-fi writer (Alex Garland my choice), and make a freaking movie. I would certainly watch two hours of that. Hell, I might watch this for two hours.

And “shock”, go fuck yourself. No one gives a shit about whether you read this blog.

  21. Here is the problem John (or solution) The Gobbler didn’t write the story for this game.

Had the Gobbler just handed the prequel movies of to say Steven Spielberg and said here is what I would like to happen. Instead of writing and directing all 3. We would of gotten far higher quality films.

If you read the synopsis or listen to someone sum up one of the movies. They sound really cool. But instead we get Jar Jar and the Sound of Music scenes. The part in Attack of the Clone where Anikan uses the force to hover over half a pear to Padme makes me vomit a little in my mouth. There are some cool scenes in all 3 movies though. Even with the bad acting they are not all bad.

Now it’s fine if you want to write of the prequels like they never happened. But you cannot give up on all things Star Wars. There are some great novels and graphic novels to be read. Not to mention I would love a new trilogy that has nothing to do with the current Story. Rather stories based on bounty hunters or rogue Jedi with their own dilemma. Set in a time long after Luke reestablishes the Jedi Order.

The Star Wars universe is such a great setting. It’s so untapped and could easily roll out hit after hit if done right. I’ve even read some fan fic that would make a great movie. There was one about a 2 twin brothers. One was taken at a young age to become a Jedi while the other grew up and became a bounty hunter who despised his twin brother. At the end they faced off in a rainy street on Corrusant.

  22. that was badass. totally with you john – in my mind, the 3 prequels don’t exist. if they did it like this trailer instead of how GFL did it, maybe i’d still have some interest in the franchise.

  23. I keep saying that, while episodes 4,5, and 6 are the ultimate Star Wars story, the franchise as a whole feels more and more like the KotOR games. We need movies set in this era of the universe, because I honestly think that this is where the best Star Wars stories lie.

  24. Freakin A…that should have been the ending to the Revenge of the Sith. Urg! Now you’ve made me mad also John!

  25. I’ve watched this video countless times over the past two days and still it amazes me. Everything you want in a Jedi Vs. Sith Duel. As long as the game stays on the right track I will probably give up World of Warcraft for it. I have some faith in Bioware to deliver an excellent MMO. Then again we can’t rest everything based upon an excellent cinema.

  26. A four minute CGI clip of jedi and sith fighting each other is hardly paramount to the work that went into the prequels.

    1. In terms of the action in this trailer and the total lack of cheesy, badly written moments, as well as a lack of annoying characters? Yes it was… >_<

    1. Probably not, unless they sneak R2-D2 or C3PO in there somewhere. This story line is well before any of the movies, I think hundreds of years and in fact a much more chaotic time in the galaxy. Pretty much, if I remember right, this is the last time the Sith rose to power before Sidious and Vader. But this Sith rising was MUCH more grand in scale then any of the movies, as you can tell from the trailer.

There’s already quite a few books and games about this time line if you want to catch yourself up on it.

    2. Just found some better details for you. ;)

Star Wars: The Old Republic takes place more than 3,500 years before the rise of Darth Vader. The most powerful Sith Empire in history has emerged from deep space to attack the Republic and its legendary Jedi guardians. After decades of war, a tenuous truce has been established between the Sith Empire and the Republic, but events occurring in the game are leading the galaxy back to an all-out war.

  27. Holy hell that was fucking awesome trailer.

I am just about totally with you on this too John. Yes I liked Episode 3 and there were parts of 1 & 2 I enjoyed, but everything else about the prequels I to felt totally cheated. This trailer is a shinning example of how badass Star Wars can and should be.

I’ve been watching the development of this game some for a while now because BioWare is one of the best gaming companies ever and if anyone can bring the Star Wars franchise back to full force, all while delivering an amazing MMO experience, they can. Like a hand full of other game companies, Valve and Blizzard come to mind in my opinion, they have YET to make a bad game, and they have been around for a long time. They already proved them selves with the Star Wars license years ago by making Knights of the Old Republic, probably the best Star Wars game so far and well good enough to be thought of as a true piece of the Star Wars story line.

I am a big World of Warcraft fan, but I have allot of faith in this game. Star Wars Galaxies came out years ago, the first Star Wars MMO. But for the most part it sucks big time, which like most of the things in the prequels, made me very sad.

Does anyone know if that’s Darth Bane in the trailer? Cuz if it is, that is just too damn sweet. Bane is one of the best Sith Lords ever, I mean it, read the Bane novels, he is so badass and he is from the Old Republic time line. In fact, the author of the Bane books also wrote the amazing script for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. As well as the Mass Effect game, yet another great BioWare title.

    1. Oh, what I mean by asking if that was Bane, after saying I read the books, it does kind of looks like Bane, but what happens to him at the end of the 2nd book leaves me to wonder if that’s him after the event of the 2nd novel…

  28. So good I watched that trailer thrice….in a row! Couldn’t they do an alternate timeline prequel trilogy because holy f*ck and boobs that was f*cking awesome!

  29. bioware is making the star wars mmorpg, so the awesomeness of the trailer does not suprise me.

bioware is to video games as pixar is to movies. they have never made a bad one.

    1. Totally agree this is my Favorite game franchise and its due to really well told story characters action and game play.

  30. HOLY COW!!! That trailer was awesome!! Why can’t that be a live-action movie? I would be all over that. Those fight scenes were amazing. And when all those red light sabers lit up the back of that shuttle, I got chills. Incredible.

  31. Agreed.

You’re 100% on point with your reaction to this amazing looking trailer. Too bad I don’t get into the MMO games.

  32. The thing that annoys me about this trailer is that it’s for a MMORPG, and not for a proper sequel to the KOTOR games, like it frickin should!

    1. Sorry Rex but this is a proper sequel to KOTOR. They have stated in development inerviews that this is KOTOR 3, 4, 5 etc. The fact its an mmorpg and not a single player rpg doesnt change it being a proper sequel.

    2. Yeah sorry dude- this is the sequel- they just decided to do things different is all.

This game has more story and voice acting than both first games combined, so if you feel like you’re loosing out- you’re not.

Think of this as the first games- only online. How is that bad? How is this not the proper sequel? They even hint at the end of the last game that the rest of this war happens in the outer rim with the ‘true’ sith. THAT’S WHAT THIS IS!

    3. The old republic games and my supper hot girl friend at the time is what saved Star Wars for me. I agree this a a proper game trailer. I wish I did not see this though now I am to siked I want to play now.

    4. Yeah I know- I’ll probably be moving in with my girlfriend right about when this comes out- I don’t think I’ll get much play time in :/

  33. Holy crap…I feel your same pain John.
Funny how everyone does a better job than Lucas himself.

I’m looking forward to this title, but it pisses me off in the same way it does you. I’ve felt this way with a few Star Wars games actually.

  34. Wow…
I don’t always agree with some of your opinions, BUT…

You’re 100% RIGHT about this one!!

  35. It is F***ing awesome.

I consider the Knights of the Old Republic the true prequels to the original trilogy.
