Doctor Who gets a New Companion

With the recent season of Doctor Who being reduced to 4 TV movie specials, I get to extend my geektitude here and talk about The Doctor.

It was announced last year that this would be the last season that David Tennant would play the iconic role of the Doctor and the search was on to find a new actor to play the 11th incarnation of the Time Lord. The current season has the Doctor in a handful of adventures in which he is struggling with the idea of having a companion. As Tennant passes the keys to the Tardis to the new Doctor, Matt Smith (the youngest actor to take on the role) the question arose who might play his companion.

BBC announces

Twenty-one-year-old [Karen] Gillan will star alongside new Time Lord, Matt Smith, when the smash hit drama returns to BBC One in spring 2010.

With filming due to begin this summer, Gillan beat off dozens of hopefuls to land one of television’s most coveted roles.

Gillan said: “I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor’s new companion. The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can’t quite believe I am going to be a part of it.

“Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him – I just can’t wait to get started!”

Gillan is not the first actress in a Whoverse show to play a different role in another episode. She was the Soothsayer in last season’s The Fires of Pompeii. Eve Myles, who plays Gwen Cooper on the Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood, first played Gwyneth in the Dickens inspired episode The Unquiet Dead. It is quietly suggested that her character was possibly the ancestor of her current role.

Karen Gillan looks to be an adorable spunky actress who will likely be a good match for the quirky Matt Smith who will add his own flair and flavour to the New Doctor.

The article describes her as: A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too.

Here’s hoping!

I cannot wait to see how Matt fits himself as The Doctor with the added Karen as his new companion. However, my final hope is for The Master to come back as soon as possible.

wow she is quite the looker! Can’t resist those red-heads anyhow. So bring on the Doctor!

Freema Agyeman played a different character before she was cast as Martha. And a lot of actors in the classic series played different parts. And no surprise with this girl as a Matt Smith companion, he’s young, so chances are she would be younger and cute girls don’t hurt the ratings. But I really have no opinion about anything until I see a Moffat episode with Matt as the doctor. My only hope as far as companions go is that they mix it up as time goes on. I’d like to see some from other planets, different time periods, or maybe a guy companion. I think there is a lot of unexplored territory when it comes to having a male companion.

They all have been modern day earth girls in NuWho. I would like to see a companion who is from the futur or another planet as they oftn did in the past. I approve of this girl though. He needs a cute redhead assistant, Catherine Tate isnt too hot IMO.

Based on a few other things I’ve seen her in, she’s going to be absolutely brilliant as Eleven’s companion. She’s also pretty damn easy on the eyes, and that’s always a plus!

I also think Matt Smith is going to surprise quite a few people when we finally get to see his version of The Doctor. He was freakin’ amazing in Party Animals!

Moffatt hasn’t let me down thus far… I’m pretty sure the Tardis will be safe in his hands.

i think matt smith will be a good doctor and i think karen will be a good assistant. i think with how popular david tennant was as the doctor it was always gonna be a hard act to follow, tennant said himself it was one of the reasons he became an actor to play that part. thats being said beng on the new serious n lets see how it goes :D i freaking love dr who :P

Word on the street is she won’t be a contemporary character… she’s not in costume in that pic. I heard she’s supposed to be a Victorian / Edwardian scullery maid or something similar…

That would be cool. I always liked it in the past when the Doctor had companions like Leela and Jamie who were from more primitive societys. And we also haven’t even seen the 11th Doctor’s outfit yet. Can’t wait for that, also looking forward to the new logo.

Damn she is so cute. I watched the first season, but lost track after a while. With her as the new side kick I’m totally gonna start watching again.
