The Rock In 20,000 Leagues Under the Seas: Captain Nemo

I remember hearing a while ago that McG, who is directing 20,000 Leagues Under the Seas: Captain Nemo (I’ll wait until I see Terminator Salvation to decide if I think that’s good news or bad news) was very intent on landing Will Smith as Captain Nemo. An odd choice for certain, but if the movie is going to be action/adventure, then it’s genius because there is no bigger box office star for those sorts of things than Will Smith.

But it looks like Smith is out of the running (or declined) and they’ve gone with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson instead. Didn’t see that one coming.

On the down side… I just don’t see him as Captain Nemo. BUT….

I haven’t read the script, so maybe he’s perfect for the role. I’ve also always liked The Rock. He’s no master thespian, but he does carry truck loads of natural charisma that goes right off the charts. Put him in the right roles, and he really shines. This COULD be one of those roles. 1. ComingSoon.com has just reported that Dwayne Johnson (aka-The Rock)will not be playing Captain Nemo afterall, in McG’s remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, as originally reported.

Thank-God, that would have been absolutely stupid, I could see him playing the role of the harponist, that’s taken captive along with the professor and his assistant.

  2. I don’t understand how Dwayne Johnson (Or Will Smith, for the matter) could play Captain Nemo. Heck, I don’t even get why they’re making this movie.

    1. Now that’s not quite true……

      …Dwayne Johnson is very charming.

I like the fact that people aren’t giving up on him. Eventually, he’s going to find the role and the film that works, that defines him, in the same way that Jason Statham has. He’s just needs to stay the hell away from kids films.
