Possible Conan Directors Line Up

Posted by on 13. 05. 2009in News Chat

It was with great joy that many people heard the news Brett Ratner was officially off as director of the new Conan movie. This let a void in the director’s chair. Who would step in and direct the mighty worshiper of Crom?

The first name added to the list was that of James McTeigue (director of V for Vendetta) which is a name I would be more than happy with if he ends up getting the gig. Since then a number of other names have been mentioned as in the running. They are:

– Phil Joanou (State of Grace, Gridiron Gang)
Would be a very interesting choice. I’ve enjoyed his films… never done anything like Conan before, but that’s fine.

– Neil Marshall (Doomsday, The Descent)
Ummm… I’d have to say “no”. The Descent is, in my opinion, the best horror movie of the last 15 years, but that might have been a fluke for Marshall who followed up with the DREADFUL movie “Doomsday”. So I’d feel a bit uneasy about him taking the chair.

– Marcus Nispel (Pathfinder, Friday the 13th)
Not a fan of this choice. Pathfinder was beyond terrible and the Friday the 13th film was “meh” at best

– Christophe Gans (Silent Hill)
I have no idea why, but Silent Hill actually has some fans… but not many. To me it was terrible and I’d be very hesitant to see him get the job.

All in all, I’d still feel best about James McTeigue taking over the project. He’s done a lot of adventure with mythology films before (having been an assistant director on the Matrix Films as well) and did a fantastic job with V. After that I’d be fine with Joanou too.

So what about you? Out of these listed directors (there may be more) which one would you put in the chair if you were in charge?

I just don’t think the film is going to get made John. They’ve been trying to make a new Conan for so long now and I’m tired of holding my breath.

  2. Cinema-Phreak says:

If Robert Rodriguez actually ever does Red Sonja and it’s not a total bag of shit I wouldn’t mind his involvement in Conan. Nnow that I think about it and checked IMDB, what ever happened with Red Sonja it’s not even listed ass in development any more…

    Hmmm,

McTeigue is a good choice, as far as I’m concerned.

However, John’s feelings about Silent Hill aside (I liked it), Gans also directed the amazing Brotherhood of the Wolf, which was a period piece with great action, so I wouldn’t write him off just yet.

heres some choices: ridley scott, christopher nolan, robert zemeckis, spielberg, peter jackson, frank darabont #1: BRET RATNER, jk

    gans!
i loved brotherhood of the wolf and
i loved silent hill visually it looked awesome. -wasnt crazy about the story tho.
i wanna see him do a conan flick.

    • I also liked ‘Silent Hill’, although some of its fanbase has turned me off to the film, as I never played the game but still “got” the film- but if someone didn’t like it, they needed to play the game in order to ‘get it’. So I’m left scratching my head…

I loved “Brotherhood” quite a lot, being a funky mix of horror, period piece, martial arts, Monica’s “hills”, and it’s in French!

I’ve also been a fan of Neil Marshall as well- Dog Soldiers rules. I’d love to see Gans behind Conan- but I think Marshall would be the more bankable of the two.

I don’t know about any of you, but it feels kind of wrong to talk about Conan with out hearing from Doug Naggy. Is there any chance he might comment on the site?

  7. The Seeler’s rundown:

James McTeigue – I hated V For Vendetta. However, there is something I recall that could make this guy the front runner. I don’t know how far The Wachowski brothers got into a script before they left “King Conan” but let’s say if there was such a script, and it was rewritten to fit into the new version (or simply having an older Conan?) then I think, as much as I may not like it, the V team is back in action.

    Phil Joanou-
That is an off the wall, unexpected choice. I remember State Of Grace, thought it was a good picture. I remember the concert doc Rattle and Hum. I liked Gridiron Gang but I’m a sucker for sports-underdog-inspirational pictures. They’ll tug at my heart every time. I like that Joanou can cross various genres- but nothing he does really stands out.

    Gans , Marshall= see above.

Marcus Nispel- Nispel probably has some passion for Conan- but gosh, I just…I….Texas Chainsaw remake aside, Pathfinder sucked toad warts.

So of this list, I’d narrow it down to McTigue, Gans and Marshall.
I would prefer Gans, but I wouldn’t mind Marshall.
    However… I choose…

    Oliver Stone

    WHAT!
Yeah. Oliver Stone. He did co-write the first Conan film, lest we have forgotten.
