Keanu Reeves The Newest Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

There is something timeless and universal about the classic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story. It’s not just a monster story… it’s a reflection on the darker side in all of us. There is a part of us that we constantly keep in check, that we repress, that we master and keep under control… but make no mistake, it is in all of us. As Jim Carey in one of his old stand up comedy routines once said “It’s our rational side that tells us: No, pushing that old woman into oncoming traffic would be counter productive”.

Anyway, another new production of the classic tale is in the works, and apparently Mr. “Whoa” has taken the lead. Keanu Reeves will be taking on the split personality. It should be mentioned that this is not the same Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde project that Guillermo del Toro is apparently working on… which is fine because he won’t get around to that for at least another 5 years. I wonder if this new project will kill his plans for his own? Probably.

Anyway, I don’t like this casting. Reeves is not much of an actor. Put him in the right role… one that doesn’t require a lot of skill, and he can work quite well (like in the Matrix films. “Director: Keanu, we need you to look sort of confused and surprised. REEVES: Whoa DIRECTOR: Perfect. And cut!”). I suspect Jekyll and Hyde will require a little more than Reeves can deliver. Maybe he’ll prove me wrong.

So Jeckel will now be a cold emotionless robot with no sign of any emotion and Hyde will be an evil cold emotionless robot with no sign of any emotion?

    • King Jonny says:

In a nutshell. That is unless his version of Hyde winds up being like Ted Theodore Logan.

  2. Someone needs to stop this from happening. Do we not recall DTESS?????

“I know where the baaaastarrd sleeps!”

    Puuuulllleeeeaasseeee……!!!

But hey, maybe I’m just a tad reactionary!

  3. Seth says:

Before I even read this article – and just glancing at the Title I thought INSTANTLY: He can’t act! He can’t take on ONE role, how is he going to manage TWO?

This will be a movie I see 3-5 years from now on late night t.v. when I’m finished watching the 5th Season of “Friends” for the 1,000th time.

  4. iknewthiswouldhappen says:

it’s possible, it could work, it, uh, well there’s, uh.hmmmm. is it a comedy? I bet it’s a comedy.

  5. GODFATHER says:

I’m going out on a limb (probably all by myself, too) and saying that this movie will surprise you, and so will KR!

  6. 3R!C says:

    WHOA! BOGUS! I know science.

  7. leeloo says:

    wtf.
    truly horrifying.

  8. RidgeRacer4 says:

I think this is good news, and an ‘interesting’ casting decision. I imagine he’ll be channeling some of Jonathan Harker from 1992′s Dracula, which was he did OK with.
We all know that Keanu will probably never be Oscar material but he’s somewhat dependable and at least you know what you’re going to get from him. Let’s let this develop a bit more.

    • Jon H says:

This is horrible! My day is ruined! Don’t tell me to let this develop more!!!

I’m back in control now. Woah.

    • Meli says:

I am going to have to respectably disagree with you that Keanu did OK in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. He horrible and sucked the life out of that character. I have painful memories of him in that movie.

  9. Meli says:

This is an absolutely horrible casting decision! Is he also producing it?? How can anyone think this is a good idea??
The only good thing that could come from this is scheduling might conflict with Cowboy Bebop and he’ll drop out of the movie…fingers crossed…

  10. HAZMAT says:

YES! This is like- my favorite book!

    • tzaylor says:

Since you’ve read the book, maybe you could tell me…does Dr. J change size when he transforms? Does he physically get bigger?

    • HAZMAT says:

Actually, he gets smaller. It was the authors way of showing that evil is less then good by showing Jekyll being smaller and disfigured and Dr Hyde being tall and well built

Hollywood changed it so he looks like the HULK in the League of Extraordinary Gentleman just the way they changed Frankestein…thats not the monsters name..the doctor is named Frankestein…the monster was never given a name…but hollywood likes changing things, which is fine really lol…

But the true meaning of that whole Dr. Hyde is bigger then Jekyll was that in the end, good beats evil and at the end you see Dr Hyde do something very brave which proves that

    • tzaylor says:

that’s cool, I hope they don’t get crazy with the effects. I would prefer a believable mysterious dark side than a blatant hulking monster.

  11. Anti-Septic says:

I probably wouldn’t see this at theater unless the reviews were astounding, but a home rental for sure.

  12. Rafael says:

I’d rather see Depp or Downey in this role.

  13. nbakid2000 says:

He looks in that photograph the same as he does in his movies….lifeless.

  14. ROSSANA says:

    ok

  15. M says:

Keanu Reeves??? Doesn’t anyone realize this guy isn’t a great actor.

Gosh, normally I complain about yet another remake, because Hollywood can’t seem to come up with new stories. However, him as the actor they are thinking of made me want to comment on that.
