The Hangover Greenlights a Sequel

Test audiences were crazy aboutit, and the highly critical crowds at ShoWest cheered on the trailer. That seems to be enough to get a green light for a sequel to a film that hasn’t even come out in theaters yet – The Hangover.

Latino Review says:

In a multimillion-dollar commitment, Warner Bros. has set “The Hangover” director Todd Phillips to write a sequel with Scot Armstrong.

The dealmaking comes two months before the first “Hangover” goes out through WB on June 5.

In the comedy, groomsmen take the betrothed for a last fling in Las Vegas, then become so caught up in the revelry that they lose the groom.

While studios often wait to see box office results before committing to a sequel, “The Hangover” has tested strongly, and a trailer brought down the house at ShoWest.

What do you think about movies getting a sequel planned before we see the broad audience reaction?

Clearly in cases like Batman or Twilight, we can expect there to already be a following that can be built upon for a sequel, and getting to work on those before the first one came out didn’t seem like a shock. But this is a movie with characters we have barely met and a one shot gag expanded into what looks like a rediculously fun comedy.

But can you build a sequel on it? Well clearly the big wigs think you can and are ponying up the bill for Todd Phillips to write it.

Too soon? Or does this confidence make you that much more eager to see The Hangover?

I think it only adds to the hype. The trailer looks so funny and I have been sending the link around to my friends and I get the same response. But Sequel to good comedies seem to suck. So we’ll see I guess.

This movie looks awesome and lots of fun. It’s been a while since I’ve actually been able to laugh at a comedy movie, but giving it the greenlight for a sequel? now that’s retarded. I mean come on how can you have a sequel to a comedy in this day and age?

The great thing about this film is that it can have endless possibility’s. hangovers will always happen and there will always be weird and wonderful storys that go with them as well as different characters and places. the problem it may face is falling into the American Pie spin off hell hole, which managed to last three movies quite convincingly but crashed and burned with the last few. I’m looking forward to this film.
