Hello John. I totally agree with you, 8 out of 10. Russel Crowe is fantastic in State of Play. I´ve been a journalist for 32 years and Crowe was like a real reporter in this movie, not an actor. Terrific. I loved the movie (which I watched tonight)and think everything was 99-100%, actors, directing, casting etc. There are not many movies that keep me holding my breath from beginning to the end.But one question remains, I write in the comments. How did Anne know that Sonia had got 26.000$. Nobody except Dominic, Cal and Della knew. So ??? With warm regards from Iceland, Anna

Can anyone here help me? I was just watching State of Play and absolutely loved it. But does anyone here explain how Anne KNEW that Sonia had got $ 26.000 paid? Who, besides Dominic,Cal and Della knew how much she got paid? It seemed strange when Cal figured out that they had not told anyone... If anyone has an answer - or a good guess- about this, I would appreciate an answer. Thank you.

I thought the movie was good overall. Affleck and Crowe did a great job. The whole political/government/corporate corruption story is a little worn out though. Worth watching if you don't have anything better to do.

I'm with John on this one. Russell Crowe is amazingly consistently good. Maybe it's the quality of the scripts he accepts, but every time, he not only makes his character believable, but also gives something extra that draws you into that character's world.

Watching LA Confidential and then The Insider really brought it home for me. He had a total intimidating presence in LA Confidential, and then you see him as a pudgy, washed up researcher and I just thought, "is this the same guy?"

So for me, it's his range (I think he's shown more range than Daniel Daye Lewis and Johnny Depp) and quality of performance that makes him the best today. I've only seen him in political thriller stuff lately, though, so I'm really looking forward to Robin Hood.

John, what do you think are Russell Crowe's best performances?

Hey John,
I just have to ask how Jason Bateman was in this and how long he is in the movie for. I noticed you didn't mention him in your review and was curious. I also agree that Crowe is in the top five actors working today. Love the site. Thanks

This review might tip the scales for me. Normally with Crowe and Affleck headlining I would be cringing at the thought. I respect your opinions John (obviously, since I'm on here every day!), but Crowe and Affleck drive me NUTS on screen.

TO ME, Crowe's characters aren't any different at all, and the only movies he's convincing in are the ones where his character isn't far from his real life character - an arrogant self-righteous prick. Plus, it still sticks in my craw that he won an Oscar for sitting on a horse and yelling.

TO ME, Affleck couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag, and the only movie I can even tolerate him in is Boiler Room.

BUT, that said, I will see this and maybe I'll change my opinion :)

The movie was not very good. Decent, but not great. A must see on DVD, not worth ten bucks.

I gotta say, John, that having just watched this movie tonight, your review is bang on. The only differences I'd have to make is that I don't agree that Affleck did a great job in this and that Crowe, IMO, isn't the best actor out there today. I do think he's great though. Played this role exceptionally well.
