Red Tails Ensemble Cast Announced

No, this is not a flop over from the April Fools gag, but it is close. George Lucas is headed back to the bigscreen with a war epic, and today we hear that he has his leads for the all-black ensemble cast with Cuba Gooding Jr, and Terrance Howard.

Yahoo says:

Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard head the ensemble cast of “Red Tails,” a feature film about the Tuskegee Airmen, the United States’ first all-black aerial combat unit.

The cast of the Lucasfilm project also includes Bryan Cranston, Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Tristan Wilds, Cliff Smith (aka Method Man), Kevin Phillips, Rick Otto, Lee Tergesen, Andre Royo, Ne-Yo and Elijah Kelley.

Anthony Hemingway, who has numerous television credits, will make his feature directorial debut with “Red Tails.”

We already know that Terrance Howard looks sharp in a uniform, and I would like to see Cuba Gooding Jr return to a role where he doesn’t have a vagina.

Lucas is not directing, but it will be his story. Maybe he listened to the fans after all?

  1. it looks likethe movie maybe pretty good. I am a fan of so many of the cast and they are young men representing. and for the record Method Man isa half way decent actor and I have a feeling Red Tails will prepare him for even more dramamtic roles in the future.

  2. I think it is great to see Cuba Gooding Jr. I have said it before and I will say it again, do yourself a favour and check out “Shadowboxer”. Great CGJ and Helen Mirren film. On top of that I recognise several actors from the INCREDIBLE HBO series “The Wire” including Andre Royo, the aforementioned Method Man, and Tristan Wilds. Now that I am perusing IMDB it looks like they lifted half the friggin cast from The Wire (not that it is a bad thing mind you).

  3. Say what you will about rappers acting, but I always laugh when “Snoop Dogg” is on. And let us not forget the artist formerly known as the Fresh Prince of Bel Air whom was sort of a rapper right? I mean “Parents just don’t understand” may not be “thuggin” or whatever it is they say now, but rap is rap.

  4. thanks for the post rodney!

this is interesting…like others have said, i hope the actual ACTORS have larger roles in this(then the musical personalities), but im assuming Lucas will want the action sequences to be characters of their own, and hopefully draw a wide audience…

it will be interesting, and i guess spike lee cant say hes the only guy putting black actors and characters in ww2 movies….

    1. You stated it’s his story. So he’s either producing or writing. I’m sure we all remember the dialogue from Return Of The Sith, which he wrote.

    2. Something written doesnt mean it is delivered that way.

Lucas was sitting in a chair behind the camera saying “No, try it again” until we got what we saw.

Director has full control over how an actor says something. If they don’t like it they will tell them to do it again.

    1. One rapper in an ensemble cast is just a place filler. Doubtful the entire basis of this film will hinge on the presence of the Method Man and Ne-Yo.

And some rappers can act… half of their job is to put on a stage persona. As an extra to fill out a crowd. I don’t mind.

If this was a war epic with Fiddy and Ne-Yo in the lead I would agree with you.

  5. Rodney wasnt Cuba Gooding Jr. already in a movie based on the Tuskegee Airman that first premiered on HBO a few years ago along side Laurence Fishburne and Malcolm Jamal Warner?

  6. NE-YO!! Oh hell no! I hope he is the first one to get blown up in the sky. Better yet: before he even takes off.

Anyways Rodney, what are you talking about when u say Cuba’s past roles include him having a pussy? I don’t know what you are talking about, but that is fucking hilarious anyhow.

    1. Most of Cuba’s role choices are those that have him all sensitive, soft and emotional. The guy is buff and has an impressive presence, but lately he is found in movies where he is a caring dad, a softy, or just timid.
