Green Lantern Movie Details Confirmed

News has hit the interweb thanks to a few interviews that were given by Donald De Line about WB’s Green Lantern movie. So far, from what I am hearing this movie is headed in the right direction!

* They’re definitely going with the Hal Jordan version of Green Lantern.

* A lot of time will be used to establish the character of Hal Jordan, so that audiences can connect with him prior to acquiring the ring that gives him his superpowers.

* Big stakes and big action, but there will be humor in the film (think a similar tone to Iron Man, rather than The Dark Knight).

* They are in pre-production, they have a production designer and a costume designer and they’re heading to Australia next week to scout locations.

* They are NOT going for a younger Hal Jordan – they’re looking for someone in their late 20’s/early 30’s.

I do appreciate that they are going with the Hal Jordan history, as I still think he has a deeper connection to what Lantern is about than John Stewart or Kyle Rayner.

Devoting a lot of time to an origin story has not worked out in the past, but as in Iron Man we can see that if done well the origin can BE the story instead of flittering past it to get to some other less important conflict.

They still promise the big action but still a lighter tone. With Batman Begins and Dark Knight being such a success, many pundits were saying that “going dark” was the sure way to success with any character and I have to disagree. I dont think that “going dark” with Lantern is at all required. A little more gritty real is perfect. And ANY ideas they had while considering Jack Black in the role needs to go in the garbage right now!

Finally after squashing the Anton Yelchin rumour, it is confirmed that we will be getting a more mature (but not old) Hal Jordan aiming for a late 20s and (hopefully) early 30s Jordan.

All of this sounds great to me.

  1. I think Chris Pine (who is already rumored for the role) would be a good fit specially if he does a good job in Star Trek. I mean Kirk and Hal are almost the same character with huge ego`s and picking up broads

  2. I don’t know John. Unfortunately, I only read Green Lantern for a short time and only the Kyle Rayner run. I like Kyle and I wouldn’t mid it if they had him in the story. I know many would disagree with me, but that is the Lantern I’m familiar with.

    1. First off, Rodney wrote this.. not John.

But yes, as cool as Rayner was in his time as GL, he isn’t the most well known in the role. Rayner had a very short run in the books and that just happened to be the part you read.

  3. Hal Jordan: arrogant, gung-ho, all-fight no-quit, a bit of a smart ass when necessary, constantly questions authority…

Mal Reynolds from Firefly: arrogant, gung-ho, all-fight no-quit, a bit of a smart ass when necessary, constantly questions authority…

Damn…looks like Fillion could do this after all…

    1. You make it sound like Fillion is the only person able to act with those qualities.

And you could line up any actor’s previous role by using words to make it sound like they are Hal’s qualities.

Mal was also a teddybear acting tough, sympathetic to those in need, morally questionable and opportunistic. Qualities not of Hal Jordan.

  4. why the hell does every one like nathan fillion so much…is it not obvious that he is a fanboy toy….i mean lets be real firefly wasnt even that good…nothing new in its premise so pleaase stop dropping his name…plus the first guys is crazy too…why the hell do you need to go the direction of TDK….just cause it made so much money ( yeah i do think that heath ledger dying did increase the amount on money it made and oscar buzz)…the only reason most of the other movies made didnt work was do to the movies sucking not the darkness of the movie….plus thats not what hal jordan is about.

    1. I agree that dropping his name for the role is fanwank, but don’t base that on your opinion of the show he was from.

Firefly was a new premise and a very original show which also contributed to its limited appeal. It just didn’t have the following needed for the network to keep it going to they dropped the axe.

It might not have appealed to you, but ranting like “everyone knows it was garbage” is narrow minded.

    2. And what exactly is Hal Jordan about, in your view[sorry, l despise posts that make comments towards/against a subject, but dont give reasons why]…or least suggest an actor youd like to see.. As for your comments towards Nathan Fillion, he has the look, he had the right style and emotion in Firefly to display Hal[remember, hes not exactly an anoying boy-scout like Superman.]
See, not that hard at all to actually put forward some reasoning behind your belief.

    3. I am a fan of Nathan Fillion (age 37), but I cannot see him in this role myself. Between him and David Boreanaz (age 39) they are the names most thrown out by everyone.

It really makes no sense at all for people to continually throw David Boreanaz name out for every Super Hero role that comes up. Why? Well he is in a hit TV show which he is also a producer of, in what universe does he leave this supremely popular show he is producing and starring in, to act in a movie that may, or may not do well. I can see Bones going another 3-4 years, so he is gonna ride that sled to the finish.

    1. He is out of the age range, he is currently 36 years old. The article does say they are looking for someone who is late 20’s to early 30’s. I think that just puts him outta range of this role.

  5. One name that doesnt get mentioned for Hal Jordon and should be is……. “Jensen Ackles” from Supernatural. He is just about the right age also. I think he would be great as Hal Jordon, just my opinion of course. My favorite pick would be Jim Caviezal as Hal, but Jim is on the older side as well.

  6. I would rule out any actor such as fan faves Nathan Fillion and David Boreanaz who currently have a TV show on the air. So who’s Hal Jordan?

Here’s the Seeler’s short five list:

    5- James Franco

    4- Paul Walker.

    3-Ashton Kutcher

    2- Josh Hartnett-

    1- Ryan Phillippe

    1. MattK, Franco, Hartnett and Phillippe are all good actors, and Paul Walker would be on the short end of that trio. Ashton is a joke. But I don’t imagine any of these guys as Hal.

And Darren, having a show on the air doesn’t disqualify you from having a role in a movie. TV stars appear in movies all the time.

I agree that hoping for either of them is a bit of fan bias and its unlikely to happen, but having a show wouldn’t stop them if they were truly being considered.

    2. Don’t be so sure of that Rodney. I am referring to schedules. Nothing more. Granted, gone are the days when say, Tom Selleck lost out on Raiders because Magnum PI locked him down.

To the rest of you: I can’t think of anyone else. And Kutcher surprised me a bit in The Guardian. I also mentioned him because he lobbied to be Supey at one point. So if he tossed his hat into this “ring”, it would not surprise me.

I want to stress that these aren’t necessarily the actors I want to be considered, but the actors (we know) that most likely be, aside from Fallon and Boreanaz. The list is also who I could think of off the top of my head.

      .

    1. I seriously whole heartedly agree…they should really cast him. He already voiced him and did well…and hes really diverse..but doesnt get much opportunity to show his stuff…lets hope hes cast..

  7. I think what film makers should take from The Dark Knight, is not that superhero films need to be “dark” to replicate the same success, but to be set in a “real” world. While more light hearted, this is also why Iron Man really caught on with people.

I think it works best when a Superhero appears in a world where he is truly extraordinary. One of the reasons why the original Superman movies never really resonated with me personally, is the fact that the character’s existence was treated so casually by the world he was in. Sure, there was a bit of “ooh” and “aah”. But would that REALLY be the extent of people’s reaction if Superman were really to exist? It would change EVERYTHING you know about the world.

I hope that’s what they do with GL, and from the sounds of it (spending time with the character, so audiences can relate to the character BEFORE he gets his powers), it looks like they will. This sounds like a good approach to the character.
