Transformers TV Spot: That wasn’t Devastator

Posted by on 02. 02. 2009in News Chat

By now everyone has seen the Superbowl Teaser for Transformers Revenge of the Fallen. You haven’t? Well go look.. I will wait here.

Well speculation was that the massive bot (from which we see Optimus Prime dangling like a toddler) from was our first peek at Devastator – the combined effort of the Decepticon subset known as the Constructicons. It’s not.

/Film sheds some light:

The unnamed Transformer which has been referred to as the figure’s alt mode: “Steam Shovel” appears to look exactly like the Transformer at the end of the Super Bowl clip. TFW2005 user yizhi521 has even posted an image of the toy with a Legends Of Cyberton series Optimus Prime hanging on to the figure, and it looks very much to scale. I’m not sure about you guys, but the image below looks a lot like the huge transformer shown at the end of the teaser.

I understand why people would think that it was Devastator. I assumed as much too. Check out this picture of the toy with the still from the trailer:

I think we are in for a BIG reveal when we finally get to see Devastator fully assembled as the massive threat he really should be.

See, back in the day Devastator was the shit. When the Constructicons formed Devastator the Autobots got an involuntary oil change. Then marketing came along and combiners were in style and mega bots were littered all over. Until Metroplex came along, but I digress…

But in this movie, with the absence of Megatron (assuming) some people are getting the idea that the efforts of the Autobots, (even with Starscream and the Decepticons help) just couldn’t stand up to The Fallen.

Well if this Steam Shovel is just one part of Devastator, I feel sorry for The Fallen.

Devastator is going to be freaking HUGE!!!

  1. Slushie Man says:

I’m thinking now that that is the arms and shoulder area of Devastator, and maybe the head as well.

Also, despite what Bay said, Megatron IS in the movie, as you can see him in the teaser (Kind of). You can see a knee and leg in one shot where Same is being attacked, that has tank treads on it that matches the Megatron toy perfectly.

    • Seth Rex says:

I agree with Slushie Man. We talked about this yesterday and I was one who showed him the confirmation that it was indeed not. We’re both thinking the arm/shoulder thing. The mixer is supposed to be the stomach/chest area perhaps. So that still leaves some other vehicles that have yet to be confirmed.

    • Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

i do believe it is his upper body b/c i just read on a site that devastator is supposed to have incredible upper body strength like a gorilla.

    • Rodney says:

Slushie… The Fallen has a tank like form as well.

And a number of the Constructicons have belt treads very common on construction vehicles.

      Just sayin.

    • spandex says:

actually the decepticon who attacks sam and pins him is star scream, the triangular body shape is a dead giveaway.

    • Seth Rex says:

Actually Spandex, the person pinning him down is no doubt Megatron. The rust on his hand and foot gives it away. I doubt Starscream went for a swim. And that sure wouldn’t be The Fallen for those same reasons.

    • Phil says:

Am I mistaken, or did the tank Decepticon in the original movie call himself Devastator? You know, when all the Decepticons were assembling for that final battle? I’m pretty sure when the tank was rolling outta the base it called itself Devastator. May have to pop in the DVD and check that out. Just thought that was kinda weird once I heard the real Devastator was gonna be in the sequel.

  2. Liquid says:

Devastator is gonna be EPIC! They’re gonna make him like Godzilla!

  3. Rajbir D says:

I love the first transformers, and this one seems just as good, if not better. Can’t really tell until the movie is actually out.

  4. Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

it makes more sense that it isnt devastator, b/c i want to see him but it would be better to keep him secret(his appearance i mean) until you see the movie or the next trailer

  5. Dragonslayer says:

    The film still looks awesome.

  6. DarkKinger says:

Stay Puft Marshmallow Man… your time is UP!

  7. i wanted to see more megan fox!

  8. Lucky says:

We still need to see a “teaser” or “final” trailer of a transformer film that dosent shows any human character at all. I love the first film (seen it hundred of times), but lets face it. A lot of the flaws were ignored, cause many of us were a fan to the cartoon series. On a budget of 150 million the robots were shown aprox. 30 to 40 percent (or less) of the film time.

Now looking at its opening box office one might have expected to increase the budget, (films like Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Spider-Man 3, Quantum of Solace had a budget of $300,000,000, $258,000,000, $230,000,000 respectively. What the hell, Quantum of Solace for $230,000,000!!!) And for this film the budget is being told only $200,000,000 only.

I also realize and agree that the content and value of a film does not reflects by its budget, but we are not talking about any other regular film (which does not require CGI character). Transformer should mainly concentrate on the robots then the human.

Now this brings me to another topic. When watching the cartoons, the transformer series were not just about autobots, but decepticons also. Their character (actually there were many) had different point of view and attitude towards each other and their enemy’s. But even this angle was not shown or marketed as it should be.

And as always the standard of quality (cgi) prevails over the standard of novelization (content, character and story development).

Look i am not against the transformer movie, but in contrast i am A HUGE FAN!!!!! But i do love to see them made the way it should be (this includes Ineradicable Hulk!!!)

Hopefully movies like Beowulf and the upcoming Avtaar by james cameron might change the direction of movie quality. Other wise i cannot understand how movies like JL or Avengers are to be made….

  9. Russell says:

I need some clarifications. So was that steam roller thing some of the Constructicons? Was it on Transformer or a combination of Decipticons to form one giant transformer? Also is there any news of an autobot in this next film that can take on Devastator?

    • Rodney says:

That Steam Shovel was ONE bot. As massive as it was, it was just one giant earth mover machine that transformed into that destructive treadmill on wheels.

  10. bigsampson says:

i have been reading all this and doesnt any one remember that the autobots had there own multi machine transforming battlestation….so i dont feel sorry for any one cause they both have big robots at there side.

  11. Elijah says:

Ok I have been reading all you als coments and I must say that the fallen is not the fallen you are thinking from the comics. And that is not SS Pinning sam down it was Megs aka Galvatron.

    • Rodney says:

Elijah, you might want to think that through. Read some forums, other sites and try to find even ONE person to agree with you out there.

The Fallen has been clearly laid out as the enemy of this film. Same character of Transformers legend revealed in the Comic.

And that is Starscream pinning Sam. Sorry. You are wrong on both counts.

  12. Moore_than_a_Fan says:

I’ve not heard about any Autobot Combiners, but they have said that an Ex-Decepticon SR-71 Blackbird will combine “Armada” style with Prime. And have hinted that the Twins will be able to merge as well, not to mention Arcee will split into 3 different motorcycles. So there may not be Combiners but there will be combinations.

    • Rodney says:

In the original G1 series, there was a large white jet transformer the decepticons find frozen in the artic who turns out to have a heart of gold and defects to the Autobots.

His name was Jetfire. It sounds like they are doing something similar with this character but making him a Blackbird. And obviously since they discovered Megatron in the artic they are less likely to use that as Jetfire’s origins in the movie. I have read nothing that implies he will combine with Prime though. I hope they don’t do that. The Convoy/Jetfire toys looked dumb.

Also, in related trivia to the character, the toy for Jetfire was the same mold used to make the Transforming Veritech fighters from Robotech.

    • Slushie Man says:

Rodney, he will be combining with Prime. Rumors of it, followed a couple weeks later by pictures of the toys of it, were released onto the net a couple months back.

    • Rodney says:

Sorry Slushie, the toys are little to no indication as to their presence in the movie.

There is an Arialbot/Superion toy as well as Megatron, both confirmed not in this film.

    • Slushie Man says:

Except that Megatron WILL be in the film. I 100% promise you. He’s not who the title refers to, but he is in the movie.

And the Prime/Jetfire thing was confirmed by people working on the movie, long before the toy pictures were leaked.

But hey, believe what you want. We’ll know when TF2 is released, who was in fact right.

  13. Elijah says:

Ok sure I wrong because all the other site are full of correct information. I just use commen scense. If you really think about it and think about the source material. But hey I do go to other sites and I have had good feed back on my thoughts but maybe I am wrong, maybe your wrong. So be it we will see soon I have a thought how the movie will play out to but hey no one would agree with me anyway so I will just kee my thoughts to myself.

    • Rodney says:

And your common sense says “its so obvious” when really what you are doing is just randomly guessing?

It is fine to speculate and have theories, but when you present these as gospel claiming you know better and just spout your theories with no grounds for validation don’t be surprised when no one agrees.

Its already been made clear that they are borrowing from the comic book character The Fallen. This was clarified shortly after the title for Transformers 2 was released.

  14. keplenet says:

wow.. that’s so cool, i can’t wait any longer for next transformer

  15. obi-wan kubrick says:

I hope Shia and Meghan Fox, and the Army Guy play extremely small roles in the film. The first film shouldn’t even of been called Transformers it should have been called “The Sam Whitwickey adventure of Finding a Pair of Glasses”.

I might not even see this in the theater since the first film was such a let down.

  16. Party Marty says:

I didnt realise that in the trailer he had a giant wheel instead of a body. Well then he is probably half of him.

  17. Microcuts says:

Forget Devastator! Why isnt anybody worried that Unicron hasnt even been HINTED at yet!!!????

    • Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

they are considering him for a possible third film

    • Slushie Man says:

Unicron is not in the movie, could that be why?

    • Gigan300 is back!!!!! says:

it would be better to save unicron for a third film anyway b/c you already have the fallen as the main villian, if they put unicron in their it just be a cameo or to setup a sequel.

    • Moore_than_a_Fan says:

Not to mention they are still trying to get across the idea of giant combiners, we don’t want them to rush things an come up with a “Galactus Effect” from Rise of the Silver Suffer. First we’d need to see a visit via Space Bride to a current Cybertron. So that we’d have a Scale Hero to combat a planet sized villian.

  18. Movie Buff in the Buff says:

Speculation… perhaps the Autobots learn of Devastator and are trying to stop him as he joins all of the pieces together, and we simply saw him in the process?

    • Rodney says:

Interesting speculation if the earth mover wasn’t already that big. Would be cool if they did interupt him. 80s cartoons were ripe with those “assembly” segments while the enemy just stood there. I dont know why they didnt sack them while they were busy putting their toys together!

Its already confirmed that its one bot.

  19. Moore_than_a_Fan says:

Unlike the Cartoons where Devastator was 6 bots, there are rumors that he will be at least 7 bots, and with Steam Shovel as only one he WILL be Monstrous. Besides if you watch it again Steam Shovel is big but not HUGE, as size comparison goes him to Prime is like Megatron to Jazz, almost.

  20. joblow says:

he’s much larger than meg compared to jazz. i can’t believe you guys are even considering they would try to make unicron in a movie. omega i could see, which would be awesome… an aircraft carrier. perhaps devastator is created to take down the fallen? the face of the bot at the end of the trailer is the same face on the “revenge” poster….

  21. dave stopher says:

Devastator is the right size for your correct!!!
