John Malkovich Joins Jonah Hex

Jonah Hex has been on the edge of my radar, but mostly because we have a soft spot for Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (once attached to write) here at TMB. But now news hits that makes me even more interested. John Malkovich has signed on to play Turnbull!

Coming Soon shares:

Malkovich will play Turnbull, a wealthy Southern plantation owner whose son is killed by Union soldiers during the Civil War. He blames Hex, a former confederate soldier-turned-hardened bounty hunter and gunslinger.

John Malkovich always impresses me (except his pointless appearance in Eragon) and after seeing this description of his character, I can hardly think of anyone else that would nail that so well.

Malkovich plays angry so well. He can brew it behind his eyes and when it finally surfaces he is like a fury hell hath not known. And his presence seems a good fit for a wealthy Southern plantation owner of that era.

I have never been a Johah Hex fan, but this movie looks to be shaping up nicely.

oh i thought you were even more excited because neveldine and taylor were doing it AND john malkovich is attached. but then i thought wait i thought they werent doing it, and now its just got malkovich

  4. As far as I know, they are still using that script, (or a good chunk therof) that was penned by Neveldine & Taylor. They have a director, now they have two names- and good actors on top of that- on the film.

I hope this good news continues. WB/DC may be struggling to develop superhero flicks outside of Bats and Supey and the Vertigo line, but to mine the non-superhero properties in the DC vaults is the best step in my opinion. Comics fans and perhaps other media will know who Hex is; the average person not so much- but the average person will just see this film as a “western”.

There was a short time where after Neveldine & Taylor left that people speculated ‘that was the end’ for the film. But Brolin and others kept it alive, and a new director stepped in. Now Malkovich signs on, and “Hex” is taking life. Unless the plug is pulled at the last minute, the film is very much alive and kicking.

We might get a DC comics related film next year after all.
