Oscar Considerations for Animated Features

Oscar Buzz is wild about the Animated Feature category and the media is already calling it a battle between KungFu Panda and Wall-E. But there are three places in the contender’s list, so who would be the third?
Fourteen films were submitted for consideration. If two more films had sought a nomination, Oscar rules would have allowed for up to five films to make the final cut.
In addition to Wall-E and Kung-Fu Panda the following films were all hoping for consideration but only three will get to run in the final heat.
“DELGO” (FREESTYLE RELEASING)
“DR. SEUSS’ HORTON HEARS A WHO!” (FOX)
“DRAGON HUNTERS” (PEACE ARCH)
“FLY ME TO THE MOON 3D” (SUMMIT)
“IGOR” (MGM/WEINSTEIN CO.)
“MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA” (DREAMWORKS ANIMATION/PARAMOUNT)
“$9.99″ (REGENT RELEASING)
“THE SKY CRAWLERS” (SONY PICTURES CLASSICS)
“SWORD OF THE STRANGER” (SHOCHIKU/BONES/BANDAI)
“THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX” (UNIVERSAL)
“WALTZ WITH BASHIR” (SONY PICTURES CLASSICS)
So aside from wanting to hit up some of the lesser known films on this list that escaped my notice, I have to lean personally towards Bolt just because it was such a surprise for me. I am also curious about Delgo being considered. Its only place in news so far has been its epic fail at the box office – but I hadn’t even heard if its even a good movie – or even worth a rental. Granted “considered” means the studio put forth their project. This isn’t an Oscar shortlist picked by the Academy, its just those who signed up.
If we are assuming Kung-Fu Panda and Wall-E already getting a place in the list, is there really any reason to introduce a third?
Its an honour just to be nominated?
So if not those two films, which would you think could give the cute robot and obnoxious bear a run for their money?

Wall-E’s the shoe-in for sure. Although I think the Academy’s started paying more attention to the obscure animated films in the last couple of years. There’s the chance that “Kung Fu Panda” and “Bolt” might be left out and more dramatic films like “Waltz with Bashir” might get nominations in it’s place, depending on what direction the Academy goes in this year.
My three picks for the Oscar are:
Wall-E
Kung Fu Panda
Delgo
Man, that’s gonna be a close one this year.
The considerations are near pointless- if those behind Wall-E don’t take the film out of contention and *into* the Best Picture category. Otherwise, Wall-E is the no-brainer winner.
Kung Fu Panda is the second best known.
But giving the notion that Wall-E is first choice, and Panda is second, I look at the above list, I would say Horton Hears A Who or Bolt for the third spot. However, “Sword Of The Stranger” would be a nice surprise. I give the edge to Bolt, only for popularity sake…
Sure as hell not going to Star Wars: The Clone Wars that’s for darned sure!
For the 3rd spot I definitely place Bolt, which was also a big surprise for me.
I still don’t understand what the deal with Kung fu Panda is….I was bored and walked away.
I LOVED Wall-e, Kung Fu Panda, and Bolt.
Kung Fu Panda
Personally I would lean towards Bolt just because it entertained me. But both my kids liked Horton Hears a Who the best of all the animateds this year.
I just saw “Waltz with Bashir” last week and actually liked it even more than Wall-E. I also saw it got really good reviews in NYT and NY Mag, so I’m thinking that might slip in. See it if you get the chance.
Pixar as usual are far above the rest in what they are achieving. It seems the other studios are satisfied making comedy pieces with plenty of talking animals…not that Panda or Horton were terrible films.
When it comes to submitting in this category it seems EVERYTHING gets pushed forward regardless of the success it carried.
I personally think Waltz with Bashir will surprise a few. Glad SOME class made that list.
I was majorly impressed by Igor. I don’t know many others who’ve actually seen it but it was one of the best animated films I’ve watched in a long time so here’s hoping it at least get the nomination. Although I think anything up against Wall-E doesn’t stand a chance.
Waltz with Bashir definitely deserves to be picked above Kung Fu Panda, but probably slightly below Wall-E. I thought it was almost as good as Wall-E, but not quite. Wall-E definitely gets the win, and probably a best picture nom
Just finished watching the “$9.99″ trailer. Never heard of it before, but it looks quite good and already reminds me of one of those usual Oscar contender-type movies.
“Sky Crawlers” and “Sword of the Strangers” look really interesting too. I hope they’re all good enough to get some consideration. I’d hate to see every nominations keep going to the talking animal movies every time.
I’d definitely pick Bolt as the third nominee, and though it’s unlikely to win, I actually enjoyed it more than both Wall-E (which is still brilliant) and Kung Fu Panda.
Waltz with Bashir, Skycrawlers and $9.99
Wall-E will win though even though it does not deserve to do so.
waltz with bashir, of course. should also win.
My guess is:
Wall-E
Waltz with Bashr
$9.99
Actually I don’t want Wall-E nominated for best Animated feature.
That marvelous film should go for the top prize. It was, after all, the best film of the year.
WALL-E
Waltz with Bashir
Kung Fu Panda
WALL-E will win, of course. Lets face it, when your movie is considered for best picture, your gonna win this one.
Top Five:
“WALL-E”
“KUNG-FU PANDA”
“BOLT”
“$9.99″
“WALTZ WITH BASHIR”
Wall-E bored me
However, the movie was technically impressive. As always from Pixar.
Kung-Fu Panda was entertaining, but I doubt it will dethrone Pixar, they are the gold standard.
The animation of Horton Hears a Who was spot on. I wish the previous Seuss adaptations would have been given the same treatment. I guess there’s always green eggs and ham.
Haha, looks like the makers of Space Chimps and Star Wars: The Clone Wars were smart enough to not even bother.
Dragon Hunters or Bolt.
Clone Wars was the first 3 episode story arc from the TV series released in theaters as a publicity event. It kicked off the animated series.
I wasn’t surprised that even Lucasfilm didn’t consider it a feature film for this reason.
Bolt should get the nod.. its the best thing disneys done in years
I think Wall-E; Bolt; and Waltz with Bashir would be the three animations nominated
My vote for Horton Hears a Who, VERY entertaining
Wall-E = most over rated movie of the year.
Without having seen (or heard of, which is rare for me) everything on the list, “Waltz with Bashir” and “Skycrawlers” deserve nominations. “Waltz” should probably win.
If you haven’t seen the trailer for Sky Crawlers, do so now. Of course it can’t win because no one will vote for a movie in which you have to read subtitles.
Like the one guy who gave a positive review of the Spirit, I think you might be in a minority there Andrew.
Not every movie is going to appeal to everyone, but that film seems to have an awful lot of people saying the opposite of your take on the film.
If anything, this list (and comments about it) may encourage me to see some of these movies that I hadn’t seen before. Granted, I saw the trailer for Waltz and I don’t see that one hitting my dvd player anytime soon.
But that’s what opinions are for.
THANKYOU!!!!!! Wall-e is overrated
Does someone care to explain why they dislike Wall-e? I am happy to explain why I like it…
It could easily take best picture this year fighting it out with the Dark Knight.
Wall-E was very good. Not the best movie ever. I got bored during it which isn’t very good. Not sure why exactly…felt like there was a lull in the middle of the film for some reason. But put up against all the other animated films it probably is the best. I say probably because I haven’t seen them all of course.
I’m highly looking forward to their next film “Up”. That looks completely awesome.
not trying to toy with anyone’s opinion, but Wall-e was incredibly boring in some parts. I didn’t say the film was bad, i said it was Overrated. It’s a good movie, but not as good as everyone makes it out to be.
and Wall-e will not win best picture when it has competition like..
Doubt
Slumdog Millionaire
Happy Go Lucky
Dark Knight
The Reader
and Benjamin Button, because that should be nominated too
