The Expendables

We have word today about a new Satllone project that is fantastique! This glorious scoop was found scrawled in chicken blood in the war caves of Yahoo:

Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham have become expendable. The pair will join Jet Li, who’s in final negotiations, as a team of mercenaries in “The Expendables,” an action film that Stallone wrote and will direct.

The main characters are sent to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator to liberate the population. Their team is “expendable,” hired to do jobs that no one else can or will. Principal photography will begin in February in Costa Rica and Louisiana.

Statham, Stallone and Lee as a team of mercenaries……are you fucking kidding me? This is flat out awesome news ladies and gentlemen. This project has officially jumped on my most anticipated list. This takes everything I liked most about Rambo and boils it down into a film of its own.

Having Stallone as the elder action star is great. I can’t help but feel that he will pass on great lessons of the action lords through the making of this film. Lee and Statham are fantastic action stars, but Stallone is a deity of war. With luck Stallone will share his anointing with these two men and they will rise to the challenge of action for a new generation.

This is that film that Inglorious Bastards should have been. I am pumped.

  1. This does sound interesting.
I still think the odds are against this being a good movie but with the addition of Whittaker , Rourke, and maybe Kingsley I think they are turning the odds a bit. Throw Chuck Norris in there with a small role, a cameo by Arnold and maybe even Snipes and I think that has enough 80s and 90s action nostalgia to be at least a decent draw at the box office.
I’m sure there wouldn’t be a suitable role in it for him but doesn’t anyone want to see a guest appearance by Mr. T?

  2. Jason Statham is an underrated actor who has the action genre down to a T in such films as the Transporter Trilogy, War, Bank Job, etc. I feel that the last two efforts Rambo and Rocky from Stallone have been much better than most of us in the movie world would have thought. I feel that Stallone has enough experience in the action genre to possibly bring a stellar performance out of Jason Statham. Also with Jet Li’s star power and action experience added to the mix you will always get a broader more enthusiastic buzz to the film.Overall I feel the combination of Stallone’s experience, Jet Li’s appeal and with Jason Statham on the brink of coming into his prime years as an actor and this film has the potential to be a success. Please check out my website http://www.contractflicks.com for more on Jason Statham and other crime movies.

  3. why dont you guys do yourself a favor and watch some movies. All I hear are excuses. once again, theres no excuse for not seeing old boy. the freakin movie’s even out on blu-ray. wether it’s john, lopan or doug please step your movie watching game up. Me and Mr. Johnzdelorean will continue to be in that ass if you do not obtain some knowlege about the films you talk about.

  4. Jesus man, are you capable of doing a rebuttle that doesn’t include insults? Also, are you not reading what I just wrote above? Before you were quick to share your distaste for Versus and rob me of my so called internet credibility; you forget the fact that John wrote the Asian Film thread and not Doug.

  5. Versus?! Please don’t compare not viewing Oldboy to not viewing that Japanese piece of crap Versus. Maybe if you would’ve said Azumi I could take you serious Lopan but if you have a site called the movie blog and put up a list of have to see Asian flicks I’m sorry but I do expect the poster of said list to atleast watch the movies. BTW did you like Midnight Meat Train as well? Kitamura is a bum.

  6. JOHNZDELOREAN, read carefully through the site more. John posted the Asian films you should see, not Doug. If he hadn’t seen oldboy yet so what? Believe it or not, lots of movie buffs aren’t in the “know” with the foreign film market and I sometimes get shocked when people haven’t seen Versus. I don’t bite their head off about it.

  7. Wow!! I can’t believe the idiocy I read on this blog most times but you’ve outdone yourself. I was referred to your site by a friend and have always maintained that you’re just a guy with time on his hands because you absolutely love crap films and seem to avoid good ones. This is opinion but a guy that touts Highlander as a great film has very poor taste. I would not insult your intelligence as I do feel that you give your opinions in thoughtful, researched ideas but my man to think or want a Tarantino flick to basically be Rambo vs. War?! C’mon! You admittedly have never watched OldBoy but recommend it as a notable asian flick to get you started? You’ve posted how you like the Resident Evil flicks once and then another time had them on worst video game flicks. The more I read your blog the question always comes up “Do you watch any movies”? If you don’t watch movies and just roam the net for movie news then admit to it and call this Themovieblogforthosethatdon’tgotolatinoreview.com. Star Wars, LOTR, Braveheart, Spartacus and Ben Hur in your top 10 movies of all time? Do you play with action figures in the tub as well? Do you direct Lego movies? Do you regret never entering the Kumate? I can’t call it with you anymore. I’m thinking of remaking Pulp Fiction with Steven Seagal, Cedric The Entertainer and Vin Diesel. You interested in producing?

  8. Throw in:

    Jean Claude Van Damme
Wesley Snipes (a ‘Demolition Man’ reunion…yummy!)
Dolph Lundgren (a ‘Rocky IV’ reunion…also yummy!)
    Sonny Ladham, (just because)
    Tony Jaa
    Ray Park
Phillip Rhree (of Best Of The Best films)
    Thomas Ian Griffith
    Jeff Speakman
    Steven Seagal
    Scott Adkins
    Sonny Chiba
    Marc Dacascos
if you can’t get Chuck Norris* get Aaron,

and last but not least…Cynthia Rothrock** and Gina Carano </em ! Why? Because the Seeler asks it!

Seriously though, Despite the mis-step that was War, I wouldn’t mind another Statham-Li flick. With Stallone in this, this would be something to see.

    Footnotes:

    * Anyone recall the days of Cannon back in the mid to late 80’s? Once upon a time there was in development The Deadly Three which supposedly would have had Chuck Norris, the late Charles Bronson and Micheal “American Ninja” Dudikoff in one action pic. It never came to pass.

**I would like Cynthia only because, once upon another time, The Seeler recalls The Executioner/Mac Bolan Stony Man stuff that was once in development in the late 80’s/early 90’s. That had Stallone attatched to it at one time. Rothrock, too. I could be wrong on that, it’s been ages.

  9. meh sounds good on paper but a ton of movies do…this will be all about the execution…….if this is done in a respectable way it could well be a very decent action flick…..but with statham and li’s track record in hollywood, we can only hope for mediocrity……but once again from what ive READ it seems awesome….but…..

  10. Tarantino never said stallone, willis and arnold were gonna do the movie. that was stupid rumours started by people who wanted to see that happen. If you really thought that could happen then you got problems cause there’s no way it would have. The way it’s goin down is the way tarantino always said it would. lets not forget the stupid adam sandler and eddie murphy rumours to. let Quentin do his thing.

  11. This sounds pretty awesome, but I want to see an even bigger action star mash-up. Once Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris, Van Damme, and Steven Seagal are added into the mix, all other action movies will become obsolete.

  12. No I like Tarantino.

Inglorious Bastards was first advertised (years ago by Quentin) to be the mother of all action films starring Stallone, Willis and Arnold.

It seems to have taken another direction. It still may end up being awesome; but it certainly looks like a different animal that I first envisioned from Tarantino’s initial words about the project.

  13. your a tarantino hater. inglorious bastrads hasen’t even finished filming and already your trying to say a movie with jason statham and jet li will be better. oh yeah, war was soooooo good. rambo sucked ! how many times can you see a fake head get choped off before it just gets stupid. stallone showed it. this will suck just like every jet li american movie and most of jason’s movies. step your game up. I expect a little more. more stupid comments like that and i’m done with this site. A stallone movie full of horrible actors with the same plot of rambo being better then inglorious bastards ?Oh i’m gonna have a good laugh thinkin of that one all day.
