Superman Cameo in Green Lantern
Marc Guggenheim, co-writer for Green Lantern is a sucker for a good easter egg, so we are certain to see tidbits of crossovers. In a conversation he deviated from the core script saying his mind wanders to finding ways to fit in cameos like Superman’s alter ego Clark Kent.
And while there’s already a lot of speculation over who would play Green Lantern — Ryan Gosling? Matthew Settle? David Boreanaz? — what about Clark Kent, who will make a small cameo? Will the part go to someone already established on film or television to be the Man of Steel, like Brandon Routh or Tom Welling?“There were rumors that Tom Welling would have a cameo in ‘Batman Begins’ as a young Clark Kent, to meet up with a young Bruce Wayne,” Guggenheim noted. “But you have to be careful when you do things like that, because it sounds great in concept, but when you sit down to watch it, it poses the danger of pulling you out of the film.”
As much as I like the idea of a Superman cameo, I would hope that they would use Brandon Routh. Not just because he was already the movie Superman, but because they are still hoping to use him in the rebooted movie style Superman movies that will tie in better with Batman and the upcoming Green Lantern.
Putting Tom Welling in the role would pander to Smallville fans, but it would certainly pull you out of the movie and make you think that this has something to do with the TV series. I am a huge fan of the TV series, but I accepted LONG ago that they are not sticking to canon with Smallville, and using Welling as the big blue boyscout, even in a cameo would distract from the movie and make it something it is not. Short of Smallville spinning off into a Superman story with flights and tights, we will never see Welling as supes.
Then there is talk about the names he is throwing around as potential Lanterns. I think that David Boreanaz would make a fantastic Hal Jordan, so he is my pick. However, Gosling is a strong contender since I feel so strongly about getting a quality actor. Not that I think Boreanaz couldn’t do it, but I think Gosling is fantastic.

there are so few dream castings that actually happen
Christian Bale was actually my pick for green lantern way back when…then we went and made an awesome batman…so here’s hoping they take a change on Boreanaz…..
I’m pulling for Ryan Gosling on this one… but I read somewhere else that there are suppose to be 3 lanterns showing up in their script… which means that we could see a few different people in the black and green tights…
…and as far as Clark Kent showing up, I’m all for it. But don’t use Tom Welling at all. The Smallville Universe is so far out of Canon with the current DC Universe that it would screw the whole Idea up for me. Please let them have Brandon Routh do it. He plays such a fucking Awesome Clark Kent (better than he plays his Superman… and he was great as Superman as well) that there is no reason not to use him.
I think the “more than one Green Lantern” thing is going to be because we are seeing OA, the homeworld of the Green Lantern Corp.
Not 3 different Hal Jordans.
Boreanaz is far and away the best choice for GL.
@Rodney…
I wasn’t saying 3 Hal Jordans… that’s OBVIOUSLY a given. I was making a mention that there are rumors of Jon Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Kyle Rayner.
@”Martian Manhunter”
why do you say Boreanaz is far and away the best choice for GL? He did do a good job as the voice for the animated film “Justice League: The New Frontier”, based off the Darwin Cook series “DC: The New Frontier”, however, in the flesh he is too old now for a good Hal Jordan in my opinion. Jordan should be younger and would have more the appearance of a Ryan Gosling-esque actor (…not to mention that R.G. is a much better actual actor than D.B. [and you are talking to a massive Boreanaz fan! Angel is one of my favourite t.v. shows of all time and I love Bones as well]).
Boreanaz could pull off a good Guy Gardner but I just think that Hal needs to be a younger man.
Guy Gardiner was a crazy violent and unstable personality. Boreanaz doesnt hint at any of that.
And how old is Hal Jordan anyways??? Who is to say Boreanaz is too old to play him. Then invented the younger replacement Lantern in Kyle Rayner to be an impuslive younger creative version of GL that we never saw in Hal.
This makes me think that Hal was easily in his 30s when he became GL, and later depictions of the character often show him with the graying sides to his hair. Hardly a young trait.
All three actors would be good, and if were up to me I’d put Coby Bell in there too- and have the GL corps in there. I would like the Hal Jordan Lantern to have his character arc in a period of two to three films.
As for Supey….it doesn’t sound to me that Clark Kent/Superman is in the script although the writer wants such a cameo in there. Instead of having Superman in there, have something more subdued. I would not rule out a Daily Planet at a newsstand, for example. This way, if the choice is made not to have crossovers (in hopes for JLA) it can simply be seen as an inside joke. Not enough to take you out of the film; but kind of like…well, Cap’s shield in ‘Iron Man’- where you didn’t see it until multiple viewings and still thought your eyes were playing tricks on you. It’s there, but does not draw attention to itself and does not slow down the film.
…and as for my previous comment analogy, please don’t say ‘Well, that because of The Avengers…” I want to clarify that a true easter egg in a film does not draw attention to itself.
I’d go for David Boreanaz as well. Just because I like seeing him in stuff.
@Rodney…
Wow… you sure are testy when an individual has an opinion that is not the same as yours. Settle down for a moment and reflect on what you just said…
Quote: “Guy Gardiner was a crazy violent and unstable personality. Boreanaz doesnt hint at any of that.”
One character comes to mind that Boreanaz played very convincingly… ANGELUS! Both “CRAZY AND VIOLENT!” …and he could totally pull off unstable. So that argument is invalid.
…as far as the other judgement that you push against me about the age requirements… I guess that would have to come from what the writers have in store for the Script. But I still see Boreanaz as too old and that is a simple opinion Mr. Rodney… that will not change with anything that you say. If it is an origin story than I think he is too old. If it is a story where Hal Jordan has been a Lantern for a long time, sure then age doesn’t matter and you could say, bring on Boreanaz… however, I still have to say that Ryan Gosling is a far superior actor to Boreanaz and I would hope to see hom in the Black and Green.
Angelus was just evil… not violently unstable… evil. He was quite stable at being evil. He was not “loose cannon” evil in his violence. There is a deeper evil in being fully in control of evil. Gardiner was irrationally violent, and eventually it was that character flaw that cost him his ring. His warrior persona was derived from his uncontrollable rage and violent impulses.
And I am not testy about it at all. That is your assumption. Just stating facts that happen to be contrary to yours. There is nothing to settle down from.
Boreanaz always plays passion and control best regardless of the character. He plays evil as well as good. He can be intimidating as well as charming and gentle. He has a presence. But instability isn’t a part of his presence at all.
@Rodney…
I seem to recal a story arc in Bones where Booth became an unstable “loose cannon” and it led him to shoot a clown on the top of an Ice Cream truck. He had to undergo psychological treatment in the show after that.
just saying.
Plus I did say that Angelus was both crazy and violent. I never said unstable. I said D.Boreanaz could play that… as mentioned just above.
A brief moment of rage hardly identifies a character trait. It was already explained that a number of things lead up to that event, which he spent many episodes that season trying to live down.
Paint a house, doesn’t make you a painter. Strum a guitar, doesn’t play you a player.
But one sheep??
And Crazy is unstable. Angelus was never crazy. He was fully convicted and intent on his very rational cause of committing acts of self indulgence and evil. That was what made him MORE dangerous. He wasn’t crazy. He did what he wanted for a purpose.
@Rodney…
Fine. I submit, you make a good case for yourself… Then give me your reasons why David Boreanaz is more suited to play the role of Green Lantern in the movie than Ryan Gosling. State a case for why D.Boreanaz is a better actor than Ryan Gosling. Convince me that my choice is worse than yours and you may convert me… as I said, I am a fan of D. Boreanaz so I might be on board with him in the role if it is a very good argument. Which is what I was initially after in asking my question to “Martian Manhunter (J’onn J’onzz)”… But since you are the only one in on the debate I would be interested in hearing the opinion from you as to why David is the superior choice for the role.
will smith
…i mean warner bros already had him STANDING NEXT to a green lantern poster PORPUOSLY in i am legend
when i paused the movie and stared at the green lantern poster with will smith i flipped out
you guys are funny……any ways why the hell do they want a white green lantern….let him be african american thike the current GL……makes sense do to there being so few african american superhero’s……will smith with a deep voice would be good…as long as he doesnt do his usual acting role…which is in my opinion been done to death…..”OH HELL NO!”
I wouldn’t use Will Smith for the role of Jon Stewart… I think Will Smith did his Superhero and it wasn’t very good… *cough*cough*HANCOCK*cough*cough!
But I wouldn’t mind it if they had Jon Stewart as the Lantern, I do think that that the Lantern in the film has already been written as Hal Jordan though… I’m not positive, but I seem to recall that being the case.
Christopher Dennis is prob availible. ;-)
If you don’t know who that is please check out the film, “Confessions of a Superhero”.
I did a review on it at MOVIEGUYS ,,, its a pretty good film…
Screw this debate.
Just give me Chip.
hahaha
@Retrobot… “Then give me your reasons why David Boreanaz is more suited to play the role of Green Lantern in the movie than Ryan Gosling. ”
I don’t have to. I am just saying he would be good for it. I love Gosling too and I think he is a superior actor, but David LOOKS more like the character and could easily pull it off.
And I think Boreanaz is cool. I like him as an actor and a personality. Gosling would be great, but when it comes down to it, I’d probably enjoy Boreanaz more just because he appeals to me.
@Rodney…
Fair enough.
