Golden Globe Nominations 2008

Golden-Globe-Nominations-2008.jpgIn my opinion, The Golden Globe awards are the the single most useless awards in the entire season. It’s probably the best run awards SHOW, but for all the reasons I listed in a previous post on the issue I generally consider them a joke.

However, there is no denying that Hollywood gives them a lot of weight, so whatever. The nominees for this years Golden Globes have been released, and in general I think it’s a pretty solid and credible list. I’m a bit surprised that The Dark Knight got shut out so completely (aside from Heath Ledgers nomination), but even that didn’t “shock” me.

  1. Agreed in almost all of them but I think THE READER is a better option for Best Motion Picture.

The ones I agreed the most are:
(what i like) Foreign film: “Gomorrah” and Best performance by an actor (supporting role): “Ledger”

  2. Here’s what I think should happen:

I happen to be rooting for both Heath Ledger and Robert Downey Jr, I think Downey should take the golden globe and carrying on to the Oscars, but Heath Ledger should win the Oscar.

That sounds fair right? I honestly think it will come down to those two because Hoffman already won an Oscar, Fiennes has been nominated for two Oscars, and Tom Cruise is so obviously a way to get more A Listers on the red carpet. And Robert Downey Jr and Heath Ledger are getting the most attention this year.

And for anyone who doesn’t think Downey deserves it…um please watch his performance in Tropic Thunder, also check out Chaplin while you’re at it, he played Charlie Chaplin and was nominated for an Oscar, he lost out to Al Pacino.

I also think The Dark Knight will be nominated for more categories in the Oscars, I mean Nolan was nominated for Batman Begins and this one was even better. He’ll be nominated this time don’t worry.

  3. Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. nominated for best performance by an actor in….arrrgghh this category name is way too long

I wont go in to detail about these particular nominations. My only comment to summarise every aspect of this movie, performance, award, nominations, judges etc is…Weak.

  4. John, your awesome, but really, the song from Bolt over the insanely powerful theme from The Wrestler. I know you didn’t like that film, but the song is good? At least I think so. But eh, I’m just glad to see you picked Anne Hathaway to win best Actress…Rachel Getting Married is my favorite film of this year, and she is just damn good. So is Rosemarie DeWitt, and seeing her nominated was awesome…

  5. I am so over the moon that IN BRUGES got noms. I’m happy it’s not forgotten. I’m bummed it didn’t get best screenplay though. but beggars can’t be choosers.

I haven’t seen Tropic Thunder yet (still waiting for it on netflix) but is Tom in it for a while? Because when I heard about his bit in it I just thought it was a cameo.

  6. While I’m glad to see In Brudges get some attention, the best comedy I seen this past year isn’t here. When I stop and think about it, I’m almost convinced the GG does not love Steve Carrell, given past years.

But at least I can root for the lovely Anne Hathaway….even if she’s up for a different movie.

Yes, I’m serious. In fact, I’ll throw down this gauntlet right now: It was ‘Get Smart’ that really got snubbed here. And what’s the nom for Defiance doing here? Didn’t that film get delayed? Or did the studio release it in limited areas and/or select cities to qualify for awards, and then open it wider after the new year?

The Tom Cruise nomination is a joke. He was in the film for how long? This sadly cancels out Robert Downey Jr. (Who was a better supporting actor in ‘Charlie Bartlett’ anyway)

    Which reminds me.

    There’s one film…
…anyone jump in, correct me at any time…

…one film that hasn’t landed in any awards from Film critics circles, no nominations of any kind as of yet…

    Where is Valkrie? Anyone?

  7. I donno John, I LOVED the score in Wall-E. Everything Newton touches is solid GOLD and the song at the end (the one nominated) was PERFECT for the end of Wall-E. That said, I didn’t see bolt. but i saw the song on youtube. not my thing.

    Go Wall-E!!!!

  8. Hey Courtney,

I agree that Wall-E is a much better movie… but the category you’re talking about is Song. And I just think that the Song from Bolt was better, and fit better with the movie than the one from Wall-E

  9. Ha! Go Robert Downey Jr. But Tom Cruise? He was just making fun of himself in that movie… no.

But of course everyones heart has to be with Heath in his nom. He’s just gotta win!

  10. you seem to think highly of Colin Farrell. I saw In Bruges, it was good but the majority of it was very dull. Colin just didn’t play that well in it, his emotions seemed forced.

I haven’t seen some of the other choices for best comedy yet, but Burn After Reading is by far better than In Bruges. And James Franco is better pick for best actor in comedy.

  11. I think it’s a pretty fair list. I’m happy In Bruges wasn’t forgotten because it came so long ago. I’m rooting for Brendan just a hair more over Colin though.

  12. I see all the categories.

I’m not that surprised TDK got shut out except for Heath. It’s a great movie and I love it, but it’s not in the same league as the films that did get nominated. Well, I haven’t seen The Reader or Revolutionary Road yet.

  13. Hey John,

I see that you left off some categories (best supporting actor) – was that on purpose, or do you think those are slam dunks, there’s no need to post them?

Also, would love to hear a podcast with you and Tapley going over each major category and debating the films nominated.

    Cheers.

  14. woah!!! there is no Dark Knight in any of that!!! i am appalled and completly shocked, if not best picture, atleast they should nominate Heath. this is just shocking, but thankyou for the update John
