The next major critics group have just put out their annual awards list, and this year they’ve given a tie to the top prize. Slumdog Millionare and Wall-e took home the Best Picture award.

This is the second major film group to name Wall-E as Best Picture (The Los Angeles Film Critics also honored Wall-E with their top prize last week) and Slumdog Millionaire is starting to look like a strong contender to win the Oscar this year.

The rest of their awards list looks like this:

Best Picture

Tie: Slumdog Millionaire and WALL-E

Best Actor

Tie: Sean Penn for Milk and Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler

Best Actress

Sally Hawkins for Happy-Go-Lucky

Best Supporting Actor

Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight

Best Supporting Actress

Penélope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Best Director

Gus Van Sant for Milk and Paranoid Park

Best Screenplay

Dustin Lance Black for Milk

Best Cinematography

Christopher Doyle and Rain Kathy Li¹ for Paranoid Park

Best Documentary

Man on Wire

Best Foreign-Language Film

Let the Right One In

Best Animated Film

WALL·E

Best Film Editing

Chris Dickens for Slumdog Millionaire

Best New Filmmaker

Martin McDonagh for In Bruges

Best Ensemble Cast

Tropic Thunder

The best documentary (Man On Wire) and Best Supporting Actress (Penelope Cruz) are now virtual locks for the Oscars since I believe each one of them have won every single award handed out this season so far in their respective categories. Take those ones to the bank.

  1. It’s too bad “Standard Operating Procedure” isn’t getting enough due in these awards as far as docs go.

But it does seem to shape up well for Cruz, actors Penn and Rourke, and the late Ledger.

I think Darren is write there!!!

  4. aaron says:

I’m glad Heath’s name is in there

  5. Homero says:

Sally Hawkins has won 3 out of the 5 Best Actress awards she’s been nominated for, so I’d put her as a lock for a nomination as well. Happy-Go-Lucky is one of my favorite films this year and I’m really glad it’s getting some recognition.

  6. Hiland says:

I’m glad Gus Van Sants “Paranoid Park” is getting some publicity
