Art of the Modern Movie Poster

Don’t know what to buy your movie buff friend for Christmas? I have an idea for you! How about a book called Art of the Modern Movie Poster: International Postwar Style and Design.

Drawn.ca shares:

Art of the Modern Movie Poster is a massive coffee table book comprising 60 years, 15 countries, and 1,500 examples of post-WWII film poster design.

It’s a brilliant look at the international histories of graphic design, illustration, and pop culture during the second half of the 20th century, and I know that I’m going to be taking this book off my shelf again and again for inspiration — just imagine, over 500 pages of movie posters, and not a single floating Photoshopped head!

Fancying myself a designer, I am often drawn to the art of the movie poster. Movie might not even interest me or might suck ass, but if the poster was at least inspiring it will have my attention for that long.

This has instantly made it on to my Christmas wishlist. You can check out more about this book at Amazon

  1. I am so glad you made a post about this because I am so sick of the standard modern movie poster that only contains the face of the star.
    Even posters of the last two decades were far worse than prints they made for European and Asian markets where more creativity was invloved.

    BTW. I love this sight! Keep up the hard work.
    … and why does John not like BladeRunner? It is the best SciFi ever!
    Just an opinon, and thanks again for the sight!

  2. Oh Rodney, when I first saw the title of the post I thought we were about to get a great essay on the lost art of great movie posters and the dependancy on those photoshopped heads. I think you have an article like that in you sir.

    @Jason Angel

    You’d have to tell us what the organization was Jason and we’ll see if we can help you out.

  3. haha, y’know, Im in the process of making a fake movie trailer right now to promote this organization. and we need a new poster, and the otrher day, i had the idea, fake MOVIE POSTER!!! but so far its just an idea, it hasnt really gone into design yet, but wen it does, ill definitely look 2 this 4 inspiration!

    btw, any suggestions for making a fake movie poster anybody?

  4. Sweet. Might have to pick this up.
    I am a movie poster designer by trade and I love the 70’s style and the eastern European (the Polish artists ruled) style that has basically disappeared sadly.
