Michael Giacchino Lands Gig As Music Director For The Oscars
It looks like Oscar will have a new band leader in Michael Giacchino. We get the following scoop thanks to the mermaid caves of Yahoo:
The next time an Academy Award winner’s acceptance speech runs long, a new conductor will strike up the band to play them off. Michael Giacchino, whose credits include “Ratatouille” and “Lost,” has been tapped as music director for the upcoming Oscar ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday.
Giacchino, who’s never conducted a live telecast before, said he’s hoping to inject some Hollywood nostalgia into the ceremony when he leads the orchestra pit for the Feb. 22 ceremony at the Kodak Theatre.
The Giacchino has scored Ratatouille, Speed Racer, Mission: Impossible III, The Incredibles and is responsible for the upcoming Star Trek score. One of my favorite things about the new Star Trek trailer was the score. The music looks to be incredible.
If this man brings the same emotive energy to the Oscars that he’s done with the Star Trek score; I will be very pleased.
Best of luck Giacchino, we will be hearing from you shortly.

Couldn’t happen to a better guy.
He’s come a long way since being a game composer on Steven Spielberg games (Lost World, Medal of Honor) in the 90s. Glad to see him get more recognition but sad to see him leave the video game music scene.
Some of his earliest game work:

Lost World

Considering these were released during a time most soundtracks were synthesized beeps and bops, it was an amazing experience to suddenly have full size orchestras playing the soundtrack to your games.
Great news! Giacchino is one of my top three favorite composers.
Giacchino is a brilliant composer, but just to set the record straight the music from the new Star Trek trailer is by Brian Tyler from Children of Dune.
Giac is the man; go Giac.
What AARON said…
And Brian Tyler’s “Children of Dune” score… seriously, the damn thing is a classic.
This guy’s career has been pretty awesome so far, and he’s really at a stage where pretty much most composers want to be. I know I do :P
His music isn’t overly awesome but he does have an interesting style. And we all know he pretty much ‘made’ the LOST soundtrack as oisum as it is. Anyway, let’s hope he can keep time for the oscar-band :P
I find it interesting that you described the music as looking incredible, how do you see music?
Really love this guy’s work. Can’t wait to see what he does with Trek. BTW the music in the Trek trailer is from the Children of Dune mini-series and was not composed by Giacchino.
AJAXLOU is right the music heard in the Star Trek trailer is from Children of Dune and it was composed by Brian Tyler.
He does have big shoes to fill though with the upcoming Star Trek movie. Jerry Goldsmith, and James Horner created some great music for the Star Trek movies, and so did Cliff Eidelman who unfortunately never seemed to gain any other big name Hollywood projects.
I always love his work! Couldn’t wait for the Oscar!
What trak is it? cause I gotta find out. I loved it ! and of course the trailer.
Thanks!
From Children of Dune ? Of course.
Never mind I found it it is the trak called “War Begins” 1:08 Love it!
