Michael Ferris and John Brancato Tapped For XXX: The Return of Xander Cage

VinProgress is being made on XXX: The Return of Xander Cage. We have word today that Michael Ferris and John Brancato have been brought on board to write the screenplay; we get the following news from our friends at comingsoon:

XXX: The Return of Xander Cage is getting off the ground with Terminator Salvation screenwriters Michael Ferris and John Brancato in early talks to write a script that will reunite Vin Diesel with director Rob Cohen, reports Variety.

The writing team, whose credits include Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and the upcoming Jonathan Mostow-directed The Surrogates, began talks after pitching their take last Friday for a new installment in the action series to Columbia Pictures presidents Matt Tolmach and Doug Belgrad.

I wasn’t a fan of Terminator 3, and am doubtful that XXX 3 will be a better night at the movies. Screenwriters aren’t always to blame for how a film turns out, but I certainly watch for them a lot more than I used to. Good screenwriters over time have a list of films that they are able to be proud of. Some projects will suck, some will not make the translation to film from the page, but over time a track record of quality stands up. For example if I see the name of Harold Ramis – I am going to assume that the movie will rule based on his history.

For those of you that are genuinely excited about the XXX franchise (or those that have a morbid curiosity) I hope that this news has tickled your fancy and set your feet to dancing! Long Live Xander Cage.

  1. Vin d is back to the movies that made him famous (hi is back to fast & furious also) It seems like first he turned his back to the sequels (probably $$$$ diferences) and now since his latest movies has been no good, he is in desperate need to accept whatever ammount of $$$$ they pay him. either that or the producers need to revive the sequels with continuity.

  2. The only thing I can say I am interested in when seeing the name Vin Diesel is Riddick. I watched Babylon A.D. recently and all that was going through my head was a vision of the film set in space and Diesel was playing Riddick. By now this guy could have made 4-5 Riddick movies and been a cult screen god.

  3. I agree with RIZE, I can’t imagine the writing being that important during an explosion, besides, Vin Diesel has never been known to star in movies with character development, but we’ll see, maybe it’ll be a good Netflix rent.

  4. I don’t think for a dumb action film like this the writers will matter all that much. No one is expecting a thought-provoking movie out of Vin Diesel and XXX.

In my opinion, the success of this movie is completely on the director here. The last two movies both sucked imo, but let’s see if we can get something better this time around.

  5. If the bottom line with movie making is to make a profit, who in there right mind would finance this project. There can be many BIG fans of this franchise and unless they keep the budget under 30 million ( which would make for a pretty cheap looking action movie) it dosen’t make much sense that this is going forward.
