He-Man Back On Track?

By Doug - November 20, 2008 - 08:44 America/Montreal

Heman13We have word that a He-Man film may be back in business after John Stevenson pwned a board room pitch session. We get the scoop from our friends at Latino Review:

El Mayimbe here…

According to my sources, one of my favorite projects got itself a director. Supposedly, Kung Fu Panda director John Stevenson went in to the Silver offices, came in and did this killer take on He-man and the Masters of the Universe and got himself the job!

Apparently, the He-Man movie is not dead after all. I hear Stevenson’s presentation razzle dazzled the execs.

Any man who walks into an office with a vision, lays it on the table and walks out with the job is a person that I will respect. Stevenson must have something of quality up his sleeve if he can saunter out with a potential franchise in hand. If nothing else I salute this mans sales ability.

The world of Eternia is a place somewhere between Star Wars and Conan The Barbarian. It will be tough to try and make the film straddle these worlds and still seem “buyable”. Perhaps an animation man like Stevenson is perfect for this gig. He understands what works in cartoon form, and may have a better bearing on what will translate well to live action more than most.

This news is off putting for a moment, but the more I consider it, the more I think everything may be ok. We’ll be sure to track the progress, but after years of back and forth it looks like The Masters Of The Universe may have a champion in Stevenson.

I hope skeletor stays true to the show.

The combination of swords and magic with technology and science was one of my favourite aspects of He-Man. If its done well it might show a way that Thor can co-exist with Iron Man on film.

Well I love to see another try of this. At the time I thought the 2003 cartoon was terrible but after watching a few more episodes last year it really had some good stories to tell. I do agree with Doug, you have to like a guy that has an idea for a movie, walks right into the producers office and lays his ideas on the desk. Then walks out with the job. Too bad we dont know what really happend at the meeting. For all we know he could have suck the producer off so good he got the job. lol

I’m not getting my hopes up for this. Just like a new Conan movie, it has been off and on again so many times. Plus, Joel Silver’s last project was the box office bomb ‘Speed Racer’ and now he wants a studio to make another cartoon into a live action film?

This is sweet ass news! I’ve been waiting for another He-Man movie for 20 years!!

And He-Man pwns Speed Racer. You can’t even compare the two.

“I HAVE THE POWERRRRRRRRRRR!” (holds pencil above head)

  6. Very interesting idea, maybe that Kung Fu Panda director could take over to do the He-Man movie but the casting for He-Man hasn’t been decided yet but I think that Travis Fimmel would be a good pick for He-Man or it can be any actors.
So Travis Fimmel could be the new He-Man maybe.

    Thank you.

  7. When I first heard the name and his previous film, I was concerned.
Kung Fu Panda?! Yeah, that animated film was a hit and a hoot, but…

…and then I thought about it and what the heck the man could have said in the pitch room. Now I’m down with this.

Not to rain on anyone’s picnic here, but what if He-Man was an animated CGI/Motion capture film like ‘Beowulf’? Is that something we should speculate on? If that’s the case, I’m sold.

  8. The Dude says:

I might be down with the idea that He-Man might work as an animated film akin to ‘Beowulf’ but if I had my choice I would chose live action all the way.

Beowulf was great but I want to see He-Man brought to life. Unfortunately it probably won’t happen.
