Street Fighter The Legend Of Chun Li Japanese Poster and Website

Under the category of “Why the hell are they even making this movie” comes the files of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li. I’ll would be shaking my head trying to understand the logic behind this even if the movie was focused around either of the 2 main characters in the game, Ryu or Ken… but building the movie around one of the second tier characters like Chun Li is baffling to me.

Yes, I understand that Kristin Kreuk is hot beyond words. Yes, I understand that her stint on Smallville has given her a little name recognition. But come on. Is anyone (in any real numbers) actually going to run out to see this thing? I seriously won’t be surprised if this project never even makes it to wide release. I could be wrong on that… I’m just saying I wouldn’t be surprised.

Anyway, the good folks over at MovieWeb have pointed out that the official Japanese website for the film has now quasi-lanuched (I’ll never understand why studios launch websites that don’t have anything on them yet… but that’s a topic for another post) as well as the first poster.

See the website here. See the poster below.

  1. If this Street Fighter does make alot of money in the box office the filmmakers can make the sequel but if it fails it’s over and then think of something else but I think the movie will do well at the box office.
the 1994 Street Fighter movie with JCVD was worst but the writer and the director of that movie likes the idea on The Legend Of Chun Li movie.
I don’t listen to critics that say that the movie will suck well cut the crap.
i don’t mind the poster but they will bring out more posters and a threatical trailer soon.
Lets see how this movie goes.
    Thank You.

  2. hopefully they go for straight tight and smooth action, with a serious storyline. I mean come on…. Chun-li has a good story, shes a girl whos father was murdered by Bison and dedicates her life to getting revenge and bringing down Shadow Law, Bisons criminal organization…..they even touched on that subject in Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie and that show was a THOUSAND times better then the live-action flick! As long as they dont try to go over the top or lower it for kids, then they should have a solid story for it………….and also like they said they’ll kinda TRY to introduce Ken and Ryu for a possible sequel, so if they cant do it right dont blame it on story or characters….. blame it on the money-hungry execs who try to make it “more appealling to the audience” I.E. more enticing for people to spend their money on.

  3. OH yeah ,whats with the blue eyes, what is this AGASHA. It’s bad enough that some people don’t think she’s asian at all. pure gas on the fire, right dumb-ass(who ever thought it was a good idea to make her eyes blue) I know it matches the background but they should have made her his brown or green and gotten a different background. Isn’t her eyes green in the film anyway?

  4. Kristin Kreuk fits the part no doubt about that. but I’m just worried how the film is going to do.there are no original costumes,no powers ether .Ok Iunderstand this movie is going to be realistic, but there is such a thing being too realistic. and isn’t that the reason why street fighter 2 the movie sucked because there were no powers, it was too realistic as far as no powers ,and not serious enough as far as the movie go’s . and i understand that street fighters don’t wear their costumes all the time, but l think once is fare.

they should present their selves as “mutants” (like in the x-men movies) they don’t have powers right away like mutant do, their just born abnormally strong and they have the capability to access powers.if they train their bodies hard enough and concentrate their mines, then their true powers will come out.
signature movies are awesome, but that’s not enough. must have powers

    a person that fights = street fighter……………

lol how lame, that means anyone can be a street fighter

go on, hurry and spread the words that i have told you. before it’s to late!!!!!!

  5. i would love to see another film of depicting the street fighter franchise to make up for the atrocity of the original movie. however, i don;t see anyone taking interest around a street fighter movie not centered around ryu and ken. hopefully they can pass it off as a “resident evil/ serenity” type film with an ass-kicking heroin.

  6. Never try to let a Japanese poster or trailer be your first impression of a movie. Don’t forget this is the same country that “The Dark Knight” bombed in, so their marketing scheme works much differently than ours, where they need everything light and fluffy.

I’m not a Street Fighter fan myself, and I’m especially iffy about any non-sequel that uses a colon in it’s title, but I might check it out if the non-Japanese trailer looks good. I read a director’s interview where he said he’s trying to make it as little like Elektra and Charlie’s Angels as possible and more like Terminator and Aliens. Probably spewing publicity crap, but at least he’s pushing the right buttons to intrigue me.

  7. PADTHAI… why doesn’t it make sense? The movie isn’t about the Street Fighter tournament. It is a story about the origin of the character of Chun-Li. Ken and Ryu (and those other named characters) don’t need to be a part. Just the “BADGUYS” who give her a reason to par-take in the tournament NEED to be in the movie.

What you said is like saying that a movie about me must have you in it to play a role. Not true.

  8. I enjoyed the first STREET FIGHTER greatly. for me it’s on par with the first MORTAL KOMBAT, and i enjoyed mortal kombat. So I’ll see this one as well.

  9. Chun Li is not a second tier character…….

Balrog is a second tier character, Vega, Cammy, but not Chun Li, After Ryu and Ken she is the next name….. I think it is kind of dismissive to call her second tier.

However, any movie that is The Legend of is sketchy. I mean there are only so few good The Legend of movies… Zorro, Ron Burgundy, Bagger Vance, Drunk Master, and lest we forget. Curly’s Gold.

  10. it makes no sense to remove Ken and Ryu from a SF story. Also I don’t think they will have some of the coolest characters from the game like Guile, Dhalsim, E. Honda, or Blanka.

  11. We don’t BROLY… people will always complain about things even without having evidence. It’s just a fact I’ve learned to deal with. Not saying it will be awesome. But I am def. open-minded and will be interested in seeing it.

    @ Kristina…
Curious as to why you compare it with Dragonball at all. Not even originally in the same medium. I mean, Street Fighter does have some ANIME now and Some Manga and Comics, but Originally SF was a video game and Dragonball was an Anime. They are totally dif. Not related at all.

  12. Yes, Chun-Li is Chinese.

Kristin Kreuk is a Canadian that was born to a Dutch father and a Chinese mother. That makes her half Chinese and I can buy her in the Chun-Li role. She looks asian enough. I buy her as Chinese more than I will buy Johnny Depp as Native American and he is playing Tonto in The Lone Ranger. He has some NA blood ties.

  13. I’m interested in seeing it. I’m a big fan of the Street Fighter series. The comics and manga and ANIME are very cool and fun to read/watch. I don’t see what all the hate is about. It’s a good character from the game. I also don’t get this whole, RYU and Ken, “main two characters” talk. There aren’t main characters in Street Fighter anymore. Maybe at the beginning, but not now. I like the idea of a Chun-Li movie. …I’m also glad that it is being treated more like a real life idea. What if Chun-Li (and some of the other characters were real? No body bitches about Batman Begins or The Dark Knight having a more real world feel. So why the hate for this?

Just don’t get the outrage. I check it out.

And it does have a wide release date of February 27, 2009 already. So it is going to be in theaters.

  14. Why do people compare Dragonball to Street Fighter? Dragonball is nothing like Street Fighter what’s so ever, Dragonball started out in as a martial arts adventure comedy/ sci fi and Street Fighter started out as a fighting video game.
