Jim Henson studios is tired of that squeaky clean family friendly image. Now they are turning to violence and murder… AND MUPPETS!!!!

The story takes place in a world where humans and puppets co-exist, with the puppets viewed as second-class citizens. When the puppet cast of an ’80s children’s TV show called “The Happytime Gang” begins to get murdered one by one, a disgraced puppet LAPD detective turned private eye — with a drinking problem, no less — takes on the case. The script was written by Todd Berger from a story he worked on with Dee Austin Robertson.
This would not be the first time that Henson is delving into more adult fare. In 1982, the company made “The Dark Crystal,” which featured a dark tone and, in one scene, nudity. But “Happytime” will also have an absurdist and comedic quality to it, comparable to Broadway’s “Avenue Q.”
The concept sounds like Sesame Street meets Roger Rabit, but I like it. Why do all the kids get to have all the muppets?? Its about time adults got to enjoy them again without having to admit we liked the Muppet Movie.
The Dark Crystal might have been more mature, but hardly “adult”. More mature to a toddler is still teen. And this woudn’t exactly be the first time muppets have crossed over into adult territory.
Puppets who Kill took a dark look at the life of violent substance abusing offscreen puppets. And my favourite episode of Angel (pictured above) had David Boreanaz magically transformed into a muppet too. Funniest episode EVER.
And as the article mentioned, the awesome Avenue Q broadway musical has muppets and people co-existing in a lowrent building in New York. The songs are magical and very adult oriented. I am in love with the music as it still sounds very charming cutesy kiddy show and addresses issues like the real reason for the internet… porn.
It’s about time Jim Henson Studios got a hold of this market. I can’t wait!!

This sounds an awful lot like the Robert Rankin novel ‘Hollow Chocolate Bunnies Of The Apocalypse’, where all the famous nursery rhyme characters are being bumped off one by one, and disgraced detective Eddie Bear has to figure out what’s going on… Set in Toy City, which is what Toy Town became as it grew…

I haven’t seen The Dark Crystal in a helluva long time. I think I recall the Angel Puppet episode. This sounds a lot like “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” except the main character is in the minority(rather than Bob Hoskins playing a human).

As well as the short-lived TV show, Greg the Bunny, which I found HILARIOUS.

Actually, the Jim Henson Co. had been doing an “adults only” puppet improv group in Hollywood called Puppet Up Uncensored for a while now. I hear it’s hilarious and I’d LOVE to go see it.
Henson and his family that succeeded him have always felt that puppets were a means to tell a story and haven’t really intentionally skewed to “family” entertainment. If you really watch, I think what makes all of Henson’s products so successful is that they recognize the adult appeal as well and like Looney Tunes they don’t pander to their audience, they simply entertain. And by being entertaining, all ages end up loving them.
SMILE TIME! BEST episode of Angel EVER! I love it. I bought my wife one of the limited edition MuppetAngel dolls. It is awesome!
