Green Hornet Gets More Comedy

I’ve personally never liked the idea of doing a Green Hornet movie at all. He really wasn’t ever all that popular of a character, and when you really think about it the whole concept is ridiculous (then again to be fair, most comic book/hero genre concepts are too). Adding Seth Rogen to the mix as The Green Hornet was also a move to me that reeked of desperation. This is NOT a good fit… at all.
Anyway, when Rogen was initially telling people that The Green Hornet movie was going to be done in a more “serious” tone. Perhaps more “The Dark Knight” rather than “Iron Man”. I could see something like that having some potential to work… but not with Seth Rogen in the lead role whatsoever.
However, now our friends over at CHUD are reporting that Rogen has backed away from those “more serious” remarks and is now hinting that the film is going to be more of a comedy:
“Me and Evan [Goldberg] talk a lot of shit. We have one rule when writing, and that’s don’t get attached to anything. One day we want to make a serious film and then Stephen Chow comes in with a good idea and we’re like, ‘Well it’s funny.’ Should we not do it because we originally wanted to do a serious film? We come from, nah fuck it, we’ll just take the idea that seems good. So it’s definitely less serious than a serious film, that’s for sure. We want the action… I say now that we want the action to play serious but Stephen could come in tomorrow and say ‘You know what? I want to throw you 400 feet in the air!’ and I’d go, ‘OK, that sounds cool.’
This shouldn’t really surprise any of us at all, especially when they announced that Stephen Chow was coming on board to direct it. For those of you who may not know, Chow is the man behind “Kung Fu Hustle” and the amazing “Shaolin Soccer“, both very funny movies.
I still don’t like the sounds of this project at all. Yes it makes more sense to make it a comedy if Chow and Rogen are on board… but that doesn’t mean the concept is good in the first place. As with all things we’ll just have to wait and see how this turns out, but I don’t personally feel good about it.

well i really cant wait for this…..with stephen chow actually directing it, it has a better chance of being good. rogan writing had me a lil worried but i cant imagine the insanity these two can put together, its gonna be a wild ride…..i hope
Seriously tho, when has Rogen let us down? His movies are funny and I have complete faith he’ll continue to follow through on that. Plus, as you mentioned, Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer were both fantastic. I think Chow and Rogen will make a great pair.
Hey Jason,
Personally I can think of a couple of instances where Rogen has let us down. Don’t forget he wrote Drillbit Taylor… one of the worst films of the year.
Never got the appeal of Rogen. Think he’s just not that funny and he’s likely to be unfunny in this movie too. One can only play the same character for so long…
This has Drillbit Taylor-ism written all over it
I hated Drillbit Taylor but with The Green Hornet Seth Rogen should take this film more seriously and try to make it as funny as he can.
John,
Who GIVES a shit about the Green Hornet. They can do whatever the hell they want with that shitty character. Hornet looks like a goof naturally anyways. Seriously! Fuck The Green Hornet. If Seth Rogen and co wanna make a super hero comedy using some shitty ass hero, then let em. The Green Hornet as a character is totally and completely 100% dispensable.
Green Hornet is going to be funnier?
Shocking.
No, really.
Vic
I think Green Hornet is an ideal property to get turned into a different kind of movie under the movie blog’s own official remake rules. Not many people know the original and even fewer feel strong about it, so they’re free to improve, throw out what doesn’t work, and get creative without having to be held to 60 years of canon like a Batman movie.
haha….aaahh what a piece of shit movie THIS will turn out to be
no i WANT this movie to fail because i like watching johns reaction when a horrible movie is brought up…
the green hornet…HA!
I am really really interested to see how this turns out. I am torn whether I think it will be bad or good. It could really go either way.
My prediction is that it will ONLY be either extremely funny/good, or extremely unfunny/bad. There will be no middle-ground.
