The changes they’ve made are caused by the Fox chairmen arguing with the screenwriters, and how they’re trying to pack seven seasons worth of origin story into one movie. Otherwise, it comes down to demographics. A teen Goku can sell more tickets than a twelve year-old.

No hating on the director, though – he and Chow did a lot of fighting with the chairmen just to get a lot of classic Dragonball stuff put back in the movie.

What bugs me most about the trailer is Fox’s poor handling of the presentation. The general consensus is that this is reminding people of “Mortal Kombat,” yet both Wong and Chow are experienced in creating modern action movies with their own styles. So why does this look more like a 90′s video game movie than one of their own?

I’m guessing it’s the Fox chairmen again. All summer, they’ve been editing their movie trailers and selling fake premises for movies they’re afraid to take risks on (Meet Dave, X-Files, Babylon AD, Max Payne, etc.) It looks like they’re doing it again. According to the cast and crew, the movie is supposedly a lot more faithful than the ads make it out to be, but Fox wants to focus on the minor changes (like showing a split-second shot of a Bumblebee car to cash in on the Transformers hype.) They’re not even showing the good shots like the leaked one I saw of Goku’s training where he’s running through the desert carrying a massive boulder over his head (or a turtle shell – I couldn’t tell.)

If they have a turd, they should at least polish it instead of smearing it around. But that’s Fox for you.
