Columbus and Carrey take on Ripley… Believe it or Not!

Chis Columbus is back on track to direct a Ripley’s Believe it or Not movie. And though the story that would take Ripley to China was shelved, their choice to lead this film is still being courted – Jim Carrey.

IESB.net says:

Paramount is negotiating with Chris Columbus to direct its long-gestating “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!”

Jim Carrey is still set to star as newspaper columnist-explorer Robert Ripley.

After being unplugged months before a 2007 production start in China with Tim Burton at the helm, “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!” is getting a complete overhaul, based on a concept that Columbus pitched.

Now instantly when I hear that name I think of Wax Museum in Niagara Falls or Jack Palance telling amazing unbelievable stories which he then offers a spooky consideration to believe … or not.

So I imagine some sort of storyline that will monopolize on this franchise continuous effort to reveal the most oustanding and unique rarities in the world. Perhaps something like National Treasure where the investigator, Mr Ripley (not that one) following a series of clues to one great find? Or will this be more of a biopic of the actual Robert Ripley expanding his already impressive library of astounding sports facts into what we know today as Ripley’s Believe it… or not!

I hope they venture into action-adventure territory with this one. Jim Carrey still hasn’t been an action hero yet.

When I think of a “Believe it or Not” movie, I think of something more along the lines of a traditional adventure film filled with oddities (sort of like Rex Hamilton’s “Dr. Dolittle” minus the musical numbers.) Or the adventure game “Riddle of Master Lu” where Robert Ripley follows leads around the world searching for the tomb of China’s first emperor.

The guy’s led a very interesting life which could easily be exaggerated into a big Indiana Jones-type adventure.

Believe it or not…I don’t give a crap!

Chris Columbus is such a pedestrian director. So glad he stopped doing the Harry Potter flicks.
