Brandon Routh May Still Be Superman

I admit that I’m one of the few people out here that really appreciated “Superman Returns”. No, it wasn’t the Superman movie most people (myself included) expected or were hoping for… but Brian Singer took the film in a totally different direction, making Superman Returns a character study of this person who walks as a god amongst men, and I for one really appreciated the approach. Yes, it would have been nice to see him throw a punch in the film, but I still really enjoyed it.
The one thing above all others that I liked about Superman returns was the huge pleasant surprise of Brandon Routh’s performance as the Man of Steel. He completely nailed it (no pun intended to the post below this one). He was so good that I went so far as to say the blaphemous… he was better than Reeve. Don’t throw eggs… that’s just my opinion.
Anyway, with all the upheaval going on around the next Superman project, many people have assumed that Brandon Routh was off like most of the other people from the last Superman project. Well… it appears that may not be true at all. Our friend Kellvin over at Latino Review recently ran into the President of DC comics and had a little chat with him including a FANTASTIC bit of news:
“So Paul, what the fuck is happening with Superman?” Well not in those words actually. Paul looked over both shoulders like he was about to score some basura and said that things are still brewing. In fact, he told me that “Last week Brandon Routh has come around the offices in New York and Los Angeles as of late to talk about Superman and what we want to do”……blah blah blah! At first I thought it was the Apple Martini I was drinking but I soon realized that I just heard a bombshell go off in my brain! Brandon? He did say Brandon Routh was coming around talking about Superman! Why the hell would they be talking to Brandon if he was not going to be part of the reboot? Because he’s still in the mix!!!
If this means what it looks like it means, it is indeed JOYOUS news! Routh is a fantastic Superman and I for one would LOVE to see him return in the tights! I’d also like to see Spacey back as Luthor, as long as there was another villain for Superman to… you know… actually fight too. Other than those two they can recast the whole thing as far as I’m concerned.
I’ve no doubt the next Superman flick will be more along the lines of a traditional comic book movie, and that’s fine too. As long as Routh is back I’m happy.

I would really like to see Routh get another chance to play the Man of Steel. I think that with a better director, a good script, and a reasonable actress playing Louis Lane, Routh could be great.
I basically thought that Superman Returns was one big poorly written, mis-directed, poorly cast crapfest.
The only thing positive I could say about Superman Returns was that Routh did a great job despite being hobbled by poor choices in script and director.
good news i love Routh hope he comes back
hated the movie but routh was the incentive in it all…he really did nail it….IMO he was as good as the late Reeves.
I’m going to go with the concensus and say that this is really great news. I actually didn’t mind Superman Returns, and Routh was a major reason why. Great news.
i loved sperman returns and brandon routh was a huge reason for that.
it would be stupid if they rebooted the franchise and didnt have him, he made that movie what it was.
it would be an outrgage!!!!!
YES!!!! IF THIS IS TRUE I WILL BECOME THE HAPPIEST MAN IN THE WORLD NEXT TO BRANDON ROUTH!
YES YES YES!!!
YES!
YES!
Bad Hat Harry should Produce. Mark Miller should write. Singer should Direct.
it better be with either metalo or doomsday. or someone that can phisically rape superman
i have a long list but i know john knows the villains.
just dont use the gorilla king kong guy! i hate that guy!
What Superman needs is a total reboot, and to try to just be completely different from the old Christopher Reeve films. Routh was good, but seemed to just be doing an impersonation of Reeve.
I think they should recast the role with someone who can completely reinvent Superman for the screen. Basically reinvent the role like Keaton did with Batman in 89, instead of just impersonating Adam West.
Casting Routh again would be falling for the same trap the did with Returns, where they tried to half reboot the franchise… but wanted to keep the things they still liked about the old films. No, forget the old films. Making something totally new doesn’t ruin the originals. Leave them be, and move on. Try something totally different.
Routh is Superman as far as I’m concerned. Love Superman Returns. Would’ve left the kid out of the mix and hated how Lois was portrayed, but loved everything else. I hope they get a new Lois Lane and make her more of the tough journalist that gets in trouble all the time that she is suppose to be.
I want to see Superman throw down with either Darksied or Braniac in this one! I don’t think Luthor needs to be in the film at all. He’s a tired character now and they could just mention that he is in Prison and that would do me dandy!
All Hail Brandon Routh! He was the reincarnation of Christopher Reeve in this role. Played Clark Kent just like CR and is simply amazing.
p.s. note to costume department: please bring back the bright colours for the suit and make the shield (S) gigantic and Iconic!
Terrance Stamp as Jor El!
Complete reboot WB! Let’s put Singer’s Elseworld movie behind us!
If Routh is back. I hope to see a prequel storyline for Superman Returns.
Routh was good, not better than Reeves in my opinion, but good enough to get another chance, but replace Kate Bosworth because she was a really crappy Lois Lane and give Superman someone to hit please!
Theymight not want to lose his giant hammer, but they may have to. I don’t know the rules of rebooting, but most reboots purge their casts completely to avoid any association with th other film.
And just because they TALKED to him doesn’t mean he’s in. They could have been explaining that his ass is probably out the door.
Let’s imagine it shall we the justice league with Routh as Superman and Bale as Batman..that alone gets me excited
I think this is actually some pretty great news. I thought that Routh was definitely the most redeeming part of Superman Returns, which was amazingly uneven at best. If it were up to me I would recast everybody (not Routh), especially Lois Lane, and get rid of Luthor and Superman Jr. altogether; not that I find anything wrong with Luthor but we’ve sure as hell seen enough of the guy already. I mean, is it too much to ask that we be provided with a villian that can actually take a punch from Superman and give it back? I think not my friends. Ultimately keep Routh, bring on a Doomsday/type villian,
AND GET RID OF THE BABY/DADDY, OVERBLOWN LOIS/ROMANCE DRAMA BULLSHIT. PLEASE!!!
Hey “Jeffrey”, there is a prequel to Superman Returns…it’s called Superman 2
Part of me hopes that Routh gets another shot as he has so much potential in this role which he din’t get to show the last time (and the biggest hurdle in making a Superman film is usually casting the man himself so it would suck to have to go through all that again).
The flip side of me has to accept that there are plenty of people who will just be confused about this being a sequel or a reboot if the same guy from the last movie is playing Superman. I know people who couldn’t wrap their heads around the concept of Judi Dench playing M in Casino Royale when she had already played the part in the Brosnan films and this was supposed to be a reboot.
I would also like to see Routh given a second go-’round. I thought the Mxyzptlk spin would be great, explaining the two Donner films as a spell set by the magical imp. While back in reality hell is breaking loose with a big badass malevolent badass (i.e. Darkseid, …) tearing into Metropolis with eyes set on a more global agenda….
For the re-boot and a “new” Lois, either kate Beckinsale or Anne Hathaway would be pleasantly distraction. Please keep Spacey but limit the appearance and shift from the “real estate mogul”..pleeeaase!
I’m another one who actually enjoyed superman. I’m not sure if it’s just because I get a warm and happy feeling whenever I watch superman movies (I even watch Superman III and Superman IV from time to time, even though I agree they aren’t all that great… especially IV… but whatever). Some parts of the story really turned me off, but I really thought that the movie was an enjoyment to watch and was beautifully filmed.
I’d really like them to keep Routh. He didn’t have many lines when he was actually in Superman mode (but how much does Supes really need to talk?), but I thought he was AWESOME as Clark Kent.
As far as the rest of the cast from Superman Returns, I actually liked most of the cast. I really liked Sam Huntington as Jimmy Olson and Eva Marie Saint as Martha Kent. Kevin Spacey was an excellent Lex Luthor in my opinion. However, I think my mom could have done a better Lois Lane than Kate Bosworth (I have NO IDEA why they chose her for that role) and they need to give the movie audience the superman-kiss-of-forgetfulness about the kid plotline (though I’d be interested in seeing that kind of story played out in one of those multiverse type scenarios).
OK… I need to stop being a Superman nerd… KEEP ROUTH.
This is indeed GREAT news and I’m with John and others who love this news. Routh is SUPERMAN!
Good news! I’m glad Routh is still in the mix!
I don’t get why a lot of people think Routh made such a good Superman. He was good in the film because it was a continuation of Donner’s 1 and 2, and he did a good impersonation of Reeve.
But Reeve and Routh are not the be all end all for Superman. They may be the best actors to play the role, but in my view nobody has ever captured on film the Superman of the comics. Routh was too small.
I’d love to see them find somebody like Arnie (sans accent), with an absolutely amazing physical presence. Superman doesn’t need to talk much, but you should be in absolute awe at the sight of him. Routh was a good actor, but he didn’t look that amazing. Take the shield off his chest, and he doesn’t look like Superman to me.
Speaking of which, I agree with Robert Forest that the shield should be big and iconic looking. Routh’s Superman outfit was pretty pissy looking.
im with shane on this one,and make his words mine.
COMPLETE REBOOT NOW.
AND PLISS BRING SOME NEW AIR THIS TIME NOT A HOMAGE OF AN OLD MOVIE INCLUDING THE GOOD THINGS AND THE BAD THINGS TO.
I think that Routh was a great Superman. Can’t wait to see him as SM again.
I liked the vulnerability that Brandon brought to the character. I hope to see him kick some major a$$ in the next movie.

ROUTH, will get another chance to become (man of steel)
i loved it ,lois married now and superman alone again now he can think about WW
stoping bullet with eye that,s toooooooo much next time they have to avoid that type of scene in movie,
might superman can grab bullets in his hands with his super speed like flash.
please don’t involve leeeeeeeeeeex as main enemy of
superman.we’re tired to see lex as villain holding kryptonite in his hand and thinking about to finish superman.
try to adopt the new stronger enemy like superman\superboy-PRIME,darkseid,Brainiac,Imperiex.
make it like that interesting, otherwise stop to making fun of superman??????????????????????
I love Brandon Routh…
