28 Months Later Gets Director?

28-months-later-fan.jpgI’m not a HUGE fan of the 28 Days Later / 28 Weeks Later franchise. Yes, I thought the first one was pretty creative in it’s narrative approach and was genuinely a solid film (although I personally think it gets a little over-praised), but 28 Weeks Later fell back into the zombie genre’s (yes yes yes, I know they aren’t technically zombies… but really… they’re zombies for all intents and purposes) cliches and routines and in the end left me unsatisfied, especially considering how different Days was.

One of the things I really did like about 28 Weeks was the ending. It sent chills up my spine and perfectly opened the door for another installment if they so choose to go in that direction (and it was obvious that unless Weeks bombed at the box office, they would). So whispers of a 28 Months later film instantly emerged.

Well, according to the good folks over at Arrow In The Head, not only is the 28 Months project moving ahead, it seems they may also have a director on board:

The scoop I caught was that a director has been chosen for this second installment. Who? PAUL ANDREW WILLIAMS baby! The UK director of THE COTTAGE. So there you have it! The 28 MONTHS LATER wheels are in motion!

No, other than the fact that Paul Andrew Williams directed a little UK horror film called “The Cottage” (which I still haven’t gotten around to seeing) I don’t really know much about him at all, so I don’t have much of an opinion if him directing 28 Months Later would be a good or bad idea… but it almost doesn’t matter because I’m not much of a fan of the idea of making the film in the first place.

Let’s face it, 28 Months Later will really just be more of the exact same that we’ve already seen from this, and other Zombie franchises… and do we really need another one? My fear is that it will get even further away from the creativeness of the first film thus spoiling the franchise even further. But who knows right? Could be great, could suck. We’ll just have to wait and see.

  1. I loved both 28s, although the first was the better of the two. I don’t mind a third film, Fox has a cash cow, might as well give the masses another serving. In layman’s terms, the announcement of 28 Months isn’t a shock. Low budget well made genre flicks make quick money…there you go.

I have not seen The Cottage. I haven’t seen London to Brighton. I’m sure this guy at the helm is fine. I don’t see a problem here. Just because (as a film watcher) I haven’t seen a director’s previous films does not mean he isn’t the right guy. Maybe folks like me will hunt down these films before or after 28 Months is made.

My other question is: if John doesn’t care, why should he care?

  2. The Cottage was not great but If you can get hold of a copy of London to Brighton I would greatly recommend it.

Leave Boyle out of this, he has nothig to do with the franchise!

  3. John,

“more of the exact same” doesn’t give an automatic reason to not make a movie. Maybe in a particular franchise but definitely not in a whole subcategory of movies like zombie movies. There are tons of movies out there that have the same basic story, same basic action, same basic comedy yet we like them none the less. I wouldn’t say that I’m a zombie movie fanatic but I’ve liked them.

I just went to see Eagle Eye last night and it was nothing new but enjoyable, just like Die Hard 4.

  4. I love 28 Days Later and i thought the sequel crapped all over it. The only good thing about 28 Weeks Later was the musical score from the firs tfilm.

  5. the cottage is fair…but im just a lover of the post apocolyptic type zombie/virus type thing….it can be a B movie and i would watch it….we all have are movie vices and this genre is my favorite….count me on board.

  6. Actually Oli I didn’t realise it was the guy who directed London To Brighton, an excellent little flick. Quite a tough watch if I remember correctly. So taking that into consideration I am feeling better about him as the director of ‘Months’, but still would prefer Boyle.

  7. Well,

I have not seen the cottage yet so i can’t really comment (although it looked a very generic horror romp from what I saw) but you really should see his debut ‘London to Brighton’. Its a cracking and very dark thriller and really demonstrates his ability to ratchet up the tension on what was a very limited budget.

While his choice of the cottage suprised me I honestly think London to Brighton marks him out as one of the best directors us Brits have churned out in a while – check it out!

  8. I saw The Cottage a few months back, it was a big let down. It was one of those cases where it wasn’t completely BAD per se but just didn’t do anything well at all. They should have went back to Danny Boyle who did Days, now there’s a guy with talent and diversity. If there’s any chance of the franchise going in an interesting direction it’s in the hands of the guy who did the first one.

  9. I’ve heard good things about The Cottage, still have to see it though. I enjoyed both films so far but really how much further can they take it, unless they go global but then you’ll be stuck with the exact same story in another country. But if they make it entertaining enough I’m up for it.

  10. Hmm. I remember the Cottage received a lukewarm review from Jonathan Ross over here in the UK.

I suppose it would be too much to ask that it’ll be from the point of view of one of the Zombies? ;)

    MMmmm braiinnnss..
