Ghost Rider 2 Is Coming

Considering the first Ghost Rider movie wasn’t that much of a box office smash (it made a respectable $116 million domestically) and the fact that it wasn’t very well received either by critics or audiences alike, you’d be forgiven for believing there would never be a Ghost Rider 2. You’d be forgiven… but you’d be wrong, at least according to Nicolas Cage.

In a recent interview, Cage confirms that there is going to be a Ghost Rider 2 and that plans are already underway for it. As a matter of fact, they even have a chunk of the plot set out. The folks at MTV Splash Page give us this:

“There have been talks and good ones with where to go with the character,” explained Cage. “It looks like it will take place in Europe and the character will work with the church. It’ll be a completely new experience. It’s exciting.”

While the film is still in its very early stages — no major “official” announcements have been made — Cage was happy to share with MTV everything he knew so far about the next adventures of Johnny Blaze — a former stuntman who, after a deal with Mephistopheles, becomes the vengeance-seeking Ghost Rider. “It hasn’t progressed to [who the next villain will be] yet to be able to say, but I do know it will be shot in Europe and there will be some sort of connection working with different religious figures,” he hinted.

I’m really not sure what to think about this. Yes, the first one more than made it’s money back… and yes, with the success of films like The Dark Knight and Iron Man, it’s a hot time to be in the comic book movie business. But having said all that, people flat out HATED the first Ghost Rider movie.

You may say, “but John, most people hated the first Hulk film, and the second one did ok”. Fair enough, but people didn’t hate the first Hulk like they hated Ghost Rider, and secondly the second Hulk film was a re-start with a whole new cast. This Ghost Rider project looks like just a sequel. I can’t imagine why they think this one would do well.

Have to wait and see I guess.

  1. It’s always the same, they say a good movie stunk. Everyone I knew likd the movie alot and I watched it last night again. It was a really cool idea. I liked the Blackheart character. Geez, how often do you ever hear anyone say “that was a good movie and was well recieved.” Me, I like Haunted Mansion and Jonah Hex too, and they got blasted by the media.

  2. GR Was Awsome The Resturant Scene Lame But I do agree in The Comics He Is portrayed To Be A DARK CHARACTER So I Do Hope The Second One Will Be More Accurate………….. P.S. SAM ELLIOT IS KING

  3. first off to even compaire ghost rider to hulk, and fantastic four is just ludacrist. iv’e been a comic fan since i was a kid, and yes, the villians could have been allot cooler, and they died way too fast, but the movie was allot cooler than i thought it was gonna be.
if your a comic fan you should have hated x-men….i mean com’n they killed off too many heroes way too fast.
Anyway i liked ghost rider, and to everyone else that didnt…..suck it lol

  4. Is this still going to happen?

    My 2 cents:
    Cage was the right choice
Eva Mendez is hot! BUT was painful to watch in this (terrible acting/ resturant scene was brutal to sit thru)
Villans were Lame, including Peter Fonda (waisted)
when they finally fought it lasted like 10 seconds it seemed, I was waitin’ for the American Beauty kid to whip out his camcorder!

Nice effects/lame storytelling by the HACK! director

  5. I cried when I heard the movie was coming out, because I have been reading the G.R. comics since the 70,s and I look forward to G.R.2! I think cage is great for this trip, and thank you for not giving up .. 1 TRUE FAN!!!

  6. I loved Ghost Rider and when I found out there was going to be a Ghost Rider 2 I was excited. I don’t know about you, but I have seen worse movies than this and even movies that were named “best” sucked. I won’t name any names of the movies, cause that would be rude to the makers, but ghost rider will be one of the best movies ever made no matter what people says. I think Nicholas Cage is a great actor to, but I do wish he was in more movies. =]

  7. I’m glad they are making sec. hope they make more . Me and my 6 year old son watched the first one 100 times. Its a great movie. I love the effects in it the bike is awesome.

  8. GHOST RIDER IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER TO BE CREATED. THE EFFECTS ARE AWESOME! HOW CAN YOU GUYS THINK IT SUCKED?? ITS BETTER THAN ANY MARVEL MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN!!! I HOPE THE SECOND ONE IS JUST AS AWESOME!!

  9. The Problems I Had With the First Movie:
1)The movie was waaay too toned down! Come on, this is about a man cursed by the Devil to hunt down evil souls. It definitely should have been a R rated flick with a horror movie feel to it.
2)The villians were just too stupid and/or too weak. It was like they weren’t even trying to stop him.
3)Caretaker takes the time to guide Blaze to Blackheart’s location, but he doesn’t stay around to help out. Major let down!
4)It was not faithful to the comic character. Johnny Blaze had too much control over the Ghost Rider(Zarathos). In the comics they were at odds with one another to gain total control over their body.

All in all, as a life long fan of the comic series, I was dissappointed with how the film turned out. However, it WAS NOT worse than the first Hulk movie. At least I was I able to watch this in one session and was able to follow what was happening throughout the film.

As for the new movie, I am optimistically hopeful that this one will turn out better. But this will depend on where they go with the character and the story. I hope to see Blaze struggling with the Spirit of Vengence more and that they give the film a darker tone. Also, I hope to see some better villians. Say Hobgoblin (which I could see fitting with Johnny Blaze being in a church) or, dare I hope, VENGENCE!!!

Finally, I see many people complaining that it is going to be shot in Europe. Just because it is being filmed in Europe doesn’t mean that is where it will take place. Howmany movies/shows have been shot in Canada or New Zealand, but then says it is some town/city in America. They may just be using it for some locale that has the right feel for where they want to go with the movie.

This is all just speculation. But as I said, I am optimistically hopeful for the sequel.

  10. i loved the 1st ghost rider. my 4 year old son can’t watch it enough. because of that movie my husband got a hugh tattoo of ghost rider on his leg. i can’t wait for the 2nd ghost rider to come out. yeah!!!

  11. I liked the first one, in fact I bought it. I have always followed Ghost Rider (including the comic books). It’s nice to see it come to the big screen and Nicholas Cage did a great job portraying it.

Hey, things have come so far in regards to special effects that you can actually bring to life what was fantasy in the comic books.

I am all about part two and maybe more!

  12. I’ve seen both Hulk movies. I thought that the first one Good, but could have been tweeked a bit. the second one actually had Hulk smaller than the first, but I thought that the effects were great. Ghost Rider was excellent, nuff said

  13. i thought the first 1 was bad ass i loved it i watch it on dvd every once in a while its awesome on the surround sound i even saw it at theaters and loved it so they defintly better be a part 2 i dont c how ppl hated how could u….just like how ppl say they hated the first hulk movie that was awesome 2 awesome action i liked it better than part 2…

  14. Actually, I read on another site that Avi Arad had come out and stated that there is another one in the works. I, personally, am looking forward to it because I think that Marvel/Sony/Columbia did very well.

  15. I loved the ghostrider movie but I think they could make it better!! Gressil, Abigor and Wallow died too soon and Blackheart died too easy!! But still.. can’t wait till GR2 ^^

  16. I dont want to see GR in Europe! I want to see him riding Americas highways and running across various evil shit! Just reboot the whole thing for god’s sake! They should use Jensen Ackles(Supernatural) as a younger Blaze, or Dan Ketch.

  17. The first Ghost Rider kicked ass. I loved the music when Nick and Sam rode together in the desert on the horse and bike. I hope the next one is good as the first.

  18. look the ppl that make the comments about the first one were drop on there heads when there were babys.ghostrider is my hero an no stupit ass punk that says that that ghostrider2 wont do good is stupit.so my hero cage the man said he don t care thats his hero too he want to b in it.

  19. hell why go to a movie if you are gonna bitch about it later GR was good for what it was a comic book flick. my family enjoyed it and is looking forward the sequel so don’t ruin it for the rest of us!

  20. first movie was fun…but didn’t cool….

GR should be more fun if they change the actor, or make over nicholas CAGE ‘s face until looks more like johny blaze…

    mm….that’s all..

  21. I’m not a Ghost Rider comic book fan, but I loved the movie. Major guilty pleasure for me. It was pretty awful, but the whole super-cheesy western gothic Sam Elliot chase-down-the-devil motif was fun. Nobody was trying to make a serious movie (although if they were, that would make it even funnier).

  22. I think Ghost Rider was an okay movie… My problem was that Nicholas Cage’s acting was terrible in it… other than that I didn’t really have an issue with it… unlike the first hulk movie which I thought had a good story, but a cartoon hulk that looked like my ass was puking teeth and muscle

  23. I loved the idea of Nic Cage as GR. I’m sure I’m in the minority here but I like Cage in almost everything. So I was pretty hyped for the movie and not surprisingly I was very disappointed.

That’s not to say that GR was all bad, there were some elements to it that were fun and badass. GR 2 could be good. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The script is the most important thing. Action, FX and one liners can only take a movie so far. A film needs a good story to support it, and the story in GR was shit. Actually I can’t even remember what it was about, so I guess that proves it.

    1. I don’t think that the amount of people who like Cage in nearly everything he does can be considered a minority. He has absolutely KILLED in every movie I’ve seen him in! And that may just be my opinion, but I know there are hundreds of thousands who will agree with that.

But, I do think the script could have been much much better. I was at a total loss throughout most of the movie. Honestly, my mom was sitting and trying to explain to me what was going on. Toward the end I understood more of it, and I did end up liking it a whole lot.

And just to add on, I think a sequel would be great (:

  24. I can’t wait for that movie I loved Ghost Rider for some reason. Cage as Ghost Rider was a great casting choice. He plays awesome parts in almost everything he is in. Just look at face/off it ruled because of him and Travolta. This movie will kick ass when it comes out. Great Blog you have here keep up the awesome work.

  25. I’m up for a sequel on this. It wasn’t good, but it wasn’t painfully awful, either, it was fun in that guilty pleasure sort of way. If they just put like 20% more effort into it, I think this could be pretty alright.

  26. I for one hated the first Hulk film much more than Ghost Rider. Much, much, muchly much more. And I didn’t really even like Ghost Rider, except in that, “Well, that wasn’t as awful as I expected but didn’t Nicolas Cage’s toupee look really weird” way.

  27. I thought the first film was great on an FX level, and I did enjoy the stunts. I liked Nic Cage and Eva Mendez. But what is said above in the comments cannot be ignored. Sam Elliott especially made the film, and I recall getting severely peed off when the tune “Riders Of The Storm” cover played and Caretaker/Wild West GR ran along side the Blaze GR….and then left his ass.

The bad guys were lame too. If Wes Bentley toned it down to less camp and less corny ‘boo’ moments, it would have worked.

    As for a sequel…

I was slightly hoping that they have a Hobgoblin/Demigoblin bad guy (the “monster” Hobgoblin/Demigoblin, with a loose adaptation -instead of a mechanical bat I want him riding a monster demon hell bat with claws!) and have a fight at a carny…but y’know what?

If they set this sucker in Prague or Scotland and showed off Ghost Rider loose in the highlands, fog and around fookin’ castles?! BAD ASS. But they do need a stronger story and bad guy this time around.

As for “working for the church”, in the comics, Blaze eventually turns to God, but why does the idea of it sound a bit like ‘Constintine’ or John Carpenter’s ‘Vampires’?

  28. In my opinion, the ONLY things good about the first movie were the special effects, and Sam Elliot(despite the fact that there was no Ghost Rider before John Blaze). They had it nailed down. The acting: SHIT, the story: innacurate SHIT, the characters: poorly represented SHIT! The movie was fun if you just completely have no idea who/what Ghost Rider is. Ghost Rider is a bad mother fucker who kills demons, saves innocents, and ignores everyone else. I did not totally hate the fact that they were going for a sensitive Johnny Blaze to put a contrast between the two, but they took it too far by making GR a stupid fratboy. If they’re making a sequel, I don’t want to see the church. Granted, the new issues of the comics say he’s really an angel, but the caracter they have established is a fucking demon. Even the church doesn’t fuck with that kind of shit. If they make a sequel, it better be darker-than-black, it better have a dartker attitude, and it better explore GR’s character. In the comics he always had at least one page where he pondered to himself while riding around. He’s actually pretty deep.
Regardless, I think Marvel needs to take GR back. You can make a PG13 GR movie easily. The first was an embarassment and insult to the character, and I think it should be remade. I say no. I will not see a sequel, and I will discourage those around me from seeing it unless the darkness is met.

    1. There actually was a Ghost Rider before Johnny Blaze, from an old western comic serial. Albeit, he wasn’t a Spirit of Vengence with the flaming skull, like Johnny and his brother (Danny Ketch). I almost think that they included it as an homage to the character that inspired Stan Lee to re-create the series and also tie the more recent series in with the original serial.

  29. i liked the first one, i am down for another one.

it wasn’t a COMPLETE train wreck…i think it was like 30% on rottentomatoes…and if memory serves even john liked some elements of it while talking about it on the podcast.

i can be pretty forgiving when it comes to a character i like.

    1. Because those two movies(FF,& Gr) were made to be kid, or family friendly. As long is they have a little action, some sarcastic lines, and do well enough to sell merchandise thats all they need to make a sequel. Ghost Rider is my favorite comic character and i was completly dissapointed in the movie, enough to be pissed about it. Ghost Rider should have been rated R. Lots of horror, lots of violence. I hope they get new writers and a new director and gont let Nic Cage have any say so about ANYTHING!

  30. Sorry, but Eva Mendez was horrible in the movie. Her acting was so wooden, she could’ve been in a Star Wars prequel. The Ghost Rider was pretty cool, Cage’s acting chops have gotten worse in his old age and the Sam Elliott charactor was awesome. Sam Elliot as a cowboy will always own your fan boy arse! And his Hell Horse?!? Fuck yea!

  31. GR sucked ass, I didn’t like the special effects, action, acting, dialog or story. I hope they fire Mark Johnson and get Stephen Norrington and David Goyer. They made the wonderful Blade 1, and that was way better than GR.

  32. well i enjoyed the ghost rider movie even though they casted a ghost rider with black hair.

i wish they use kickass bad guys though..scarecrow and zodiac are scary awsome ghost rider villains.

but i like another villain- i forgot his name but he looks just like GR but hes more buff and hes got more spikes on him…i read the comic and i dont remember the guys name!

i, like JAWMUNCHER, didnt like the villains..i mean..that was nowhere even CLOSE to blackheart..blackheart- no- i wont even get into how bad they made him look…

maybe i will: blackheart doesnt LOOK human- hes supposed to look all devilish and black…like a weird venom with no host
