Russell Crowe to take on Bill Hicks?

By Rodney - August 19, 2008 - 14:18 America/Montreal

With Nottingham filming being delayed, Russell Crowe has some time on his hands. So rather than take up knitting he is looking at picking up a part time job. Rumour has it that he has arranged to play Commedian Bill Hicks as soon as they finish with the script.

Coming Soon says:

“I have another project based on the life of comedian Bill Hicks, which is going from treatment to draft stage with Kiwi writer Mark Staufer.”

It is understood he is considering playing the main role of Hicks — a controversial and brilliant American comedian who battled drug and alcohol abuse before dying from cancer at 32. Crowe confirmed Nottingham would not go ahead until March next year because director Sir Ridley Scott wanted the leaves on the trees in England’s Sherwood Forest to be the right colour.

I am pretty bumbed that Nottingham is being pushed back over something so petty as the colour of leaves.

But as much as I think Crowe would just rock the shit out of a man struggling in the emotional depths of drug and alcohol abuse, I find it strange to think of him as a comedian. Sounds like the movie will focus more on Hick’s off stage life so I guess that is acceptable.

  1. Bill Hicks was an AMAZING talent and was taken far too early. I first learned of this comedic juggernaut when I was working for TV Guide in the early 90’s. Funny, insightful and brilliant! I hope Mr. Crowe does Bill justice. My wife’s (and my) initial reaction when we first saw one of his specials was gut-busting laughter that both os us were hardly able to control. Keeping our fingers crossed for this one, his talent is very missed along with Richard Jeni, the Platypus Man!

Russell Crowe is one of the most over rated actors in Hollywood. He can’t even mask his thick Australian accent. He’s playing American characters with a damn Australian accent. He IS SO OVERRATED!!!!

  3. Rodney says:

Sorry Brandy you will find yourself in the minority there. Crowe is an insanely good actor, which I didn’t even know had an accent til I saw him in an interview. I think he does ok with that.

I actually study comedy under one of Bill Hick’s buddies. Looking forward to this.

Hicks doesn’t need a film. Go read ‘Love All The People,’ then buy ‘Sane Man,’ ‘Relentless’ etc. on DVD, and throw in a couple of his original four albums for good measure. It’s all there, in his writings or stage material.

Plus, we all know that the success of biopics has more to do with the popularity of the person than the quality of the film. Hicks wasn’t too popular in America. I know this, and I’m a fuckin’ waffle waitress.
