Live Action Scooby-Doo Direct To DVD Prequel In The Works

SdIf you wanted another Scooby Doo film, were hoping for a prequel, and wanted none of the original cast …then do I have a scoop for you! The following news was made available to us from the professionals at Variety:

A third live-action “Scooby-Doo” movie is going straight to DVD and the Cartoon Network in fall 2009.

Direct-to-platform production arm Warner Premiere will begin principal photography on Monday in Vancouver on “Scooby-Doo: The Beginning,” a prequel to the two live-action theatrical “Scooby-Doo” pics Warner released in 2002 and 2004 that jointly yielded $458 million in global box office revenue.

I have managed to skip the previous two Scooby Doo live action films after hearing they were horrible from friends. I enjoy the cartoon and didn’t feel the need to see a live action Scooby Doo, never mind one that people were warning me to stay away from.

It’ s a bit curious that they will release this film on DVD and on television. The TV release could serve as a commercial to those that care to see it again. For the most part however, I would guess that showing it on TV would hurt sales of the DVD. I could be wrong, but if I have the options of buying or free; free usually wins.

International Friends – Will you be watching this on TV, Picking up the DVD or watching for birds instead?

  1. Since this is gonna be a prequel, I wonder if they will the cartoon A Pup Name Scooby-Doo as reference.

That series was a prequel which had all the characters being kids and Scooby-Doo was just a little puppy at the time.

  2. The first 2 weren’t that terrible. They were silly, but a Scooby Doo film was never going to be the Dark Knight. I think they captured the characters well, and were fine for a once-only viewing.

But most of that was due to having decent actors, and decent special effects. If you took away all of that (which is usually what goes with a direct-to-DVD film), you’re left with a silly film with no positives.

I don’t foresee any sleepless nights over missing this.

  3. Truly incredible news !!!!

I can’t imagine the excitment the ppl that are working on this must feel everyday as they wake up and realise their working on a direct to dvd Scooby Doo film.

  4. The first one was stupid, but at least watchable. And I didn’t even bother seeing the second one. But a direct to DVD prequel is just stupid. It has no prospect in either a money making or creative aspect.

Also, your opening paragraph is probably the funniest thing I’ve seen all week.

  5. The first two were enjoyable enough. Nothing I’d ever watch more then once, but they were fine for a once-through.

I’ll probably catch this one when it airs on TV, just out of curiosity. But if it doens’t have Scrappy, then it already fucks with continuity, as a flashback in the first movie showed he was there with them, in the beginning.
