Scream 4 Restart?

ScreamIt appears that Scream 4 is still happening and the word is that it will be some sort of restart? We get wind of these rumblings from our friends at moviesonline:

Not exactly new news since we already knew about Scream 4 but today as part of the 7 year deal between Showtime and The Weinsteins comes word that Scream 4 is still on tap. It is going to be what they are calling a restart to the franchise. We will see if they can pull that one off. The Weinsteins say “The Scream franchise has become a cult classic. Together, all three movies have grossed over $300 million at the box office, just in the United States alone. The fans have been asking for a 4th Scream movie for years and we’re finally giving it to them. As far as details go, we’re only in the planning stages and we may not get around to it [Scream 4] for quite some time, but rest assured, it will happen.”

I am not certain what they mean by a restart …if they still plan to contact the original cast? Are we going to follow the cast anew in another time and place? Is this going to be a bizarro world or alternate dimension where we see the same players act out another new and fresh horror film?

….Now that I think of it, that may not be a bad option at all. If they did a back and white horror film that was set in the 1950’s in small town USA, it could be the best sort of re-imagining possible whilst paying homage to the franchise by using the familiar cast of characters. This is probably not what they are planning – but it’s an idea.

International Friends – what do you think we have in store?

  1. How can you restart this franchise?
Just remake the first one? Twelve years after the original? I’m sorry but that is just insane….
The first SCREAM is a great film, the two sequel were more or less shit.
Please people, wait at least another 10 years before you remake this. Or wait…..don’t remake it at all. There’s no need for it whatsoever.

  2. I loved the Scream movies. I realize two and three weren’t as good (cause the first was so da-n good), but I always considered it a journey of Neves character so I went along happily for the ride. I gotta say I really liked the second film (that opening was really great) maybe it was just the reveal in the third that wasn’t as thrilling — anyways I would be in line to see this movie. I loved with the first two the released them in the fall then released them in the spring.
I always thought the door open at the end of the third was a wink that there was more story to tell. Now I don’t think they need to have Neve in it (love her though) they could simply be in a new town, new characters and it be a copy cat (similar killings) but if needed they could always bring in Courtney Cox -Arquette since she is a reporter (and Dewey could show up since they were getting married)
but as a fan I don’t need the characters back, just good writing and the thrills. God, I can still hear Drew Barrymore gasping for air as her mom is on the phone — that is one of my favorite moments

can’t wait, but I will patiently (just my thoughts)

  3. I would prefer they had Neve’s Campbell character loose her mind and start doing similar murders but with the leading star being someone like Anna Faris or Jennifer Hewitt. That would be interesting!
