Robocop Producer Is Expecting An R Rating

We have good news from the mouth of Robocop producer Mike Medavoy today regarding the rating of Robocop. Much thanks to our friends at MTV for the hookup:
“Well I was involved with the original ‘Robocop,’ and it was an R, and the likelihood is that this will be an R,” producer Mike Medavoy told MTV News. “It’s likely to be an R unless the director cuts back on some of it.”
That director being Aronofsky, it’s unlikely he’ll pull any punches. Initial trepidation, in fact, didn’t center around his vision, but on the possibility the film would be in 3D. If it’s in 3D, the argument goes, that alone necessitates skewing younger. Medavoy is adamant 3D hasn’t even been discussed. “I don’t think that’s even come up,” he said.
I really had no doubt that Robocop was going to be restricted, but it’s good to lay concerns to rest. I am still not sure if the film is going to be a sequel, a remake or a re-invisioning. Differing stories have been swirling round the web and at this point I’m just going to wait and see.
I for one hope Peter Weller can be called back to wear the suit. He did an outstanding job as Murphy and I think this film would be much better off if they could get him on board again. Mind you, this is all dependent on what direction they will be taking the story. As concerned as I m about this Robocop picture, I am excited to see that Medavoy is on board again, and genuinely seems excited about the project.

Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain and other future projects. Then Robocop? Seems like an odd choice but I think it is a good idea for him to make it.
Peter Weller would be perfect, theres no reason why a face attached to the front of a cyborg cant age a bit. A return to ultra violent satire is the way.
R -Rating for violence or nudity, Well all I care about is the 3D effects Robocop was the pioneer of the 3D, possibly the most advanced 3D techniques of that time were used
I heard it is set in LA 20 years after the first and the Robocop program has been shut down so guess no Peter Weller
I have hopes for Peter Weller to come back but i wouldn’t bet on it.
Did you guys experience the earthquake? Everyone OK?
I heard there was an earthquake – but didn’t feel it
Darren Aronofsky helming this has got me VERY excited about this.
It will be very interesting to see what he does with the concept.
Also, count me in on the “Bring Peter Weller back”-Team.
He was great in the original and I see no reason why he couldn’t do it again.
aronofsky!
Weller was awesome in season 5 of 24.
As someone who was mortified by the initial reports of this film, I must admit that everything I’ve been hearing recently make it sound like this is heading in the right direction. It’s a sequel not a remake, it’s got good people attached and it seems they want to bring RoboCop back to what made it good the first time. This is all encouraging.
A while back someone here wrote an article about how a film doesn’t need an R to be a good action film. I agree, and I don’t care what the final rating is, so long as the film is gritty, violent and action packed. It’s just good when a director doesn’t intentionally limit himself when creating the violence or action, for fear of getting an R.
I agree with you, do not make it an R for R’s sake. But have the freedom to make the movie you want; if it is deemed R – so be it.
R, S, T…you and me who cares it can still generate into a trash can.
Aronofsky better deliver this on a silver platter or he can bite Bender’s shiny metal ass!
