Jon Favreau-2008
It looks like Favreau will be back to direct the Iron Man for another round! We get the following (unconfirmed) exclusive from our friends at themovingpicture:

It’s not officially announced yet, but I’m told that Marvel Studios and Iron Man director Jon Favreau have reached a deal for him to helm the sequel, due out in 2010. (Robert Downey Jr had a sequel clause in his contract so he’s on board.) Marvel Studios boss David Maisel was quick to put out a “definitely” richer offer to Favreau, but not quick enough for Jon — who used the Internet and other media to rile up the movie’s many fans by spreading nonsense that Marvel was dragging its feet and then lowballing him.

Well this is good news. I never had any doubt that Favreau would be back, but it’s nice to know that the deal has been locked up. No word yet on what his paycheck will be, but we will try and snoop for that information as well.

I enjoyed Iron Man very much. The construction of the suits was a treat for me. I love it when armor and weapons are forged in a film, and this love carried over to the high tech assembly of the Iron Man exoskeleton in spades. Sadly we will probably see way less of this in the sequel (and for good reason) but I hope what they lose in forging, they make up in violence.

  1. Phil Gee says:

Spider-man 2 proved you can make a high quality sequel in a short two year window but they started prep on that as soon as the first film came out.

At this rate, Iron Man 2 will have to be 90 mins of wrestling with booze in a bar ( and maybe Fin Fang Foom can walk in looking for trouble) because they won’t have time to shoot anything more elaborate.

i agree phil, the first one was great, it is hard to top that

a lot of people are giving Favreau crap for his demands on the sequel, citing that he could be easily replaced by a better action director.

X-Men 3 is an example of a franchise that lost its soul at the loss of a dedicated director. I’d take Favreau’s enthusiasm for making Iron Man 2 an actual well made movie over someone else’s desire to blow more things up.
